Chapter 5

Andrea added, "The doctor said you have severe hypoglycemia. If I hadn't gotten you to the hospital in time, you could've died."

I stayed silent as I more or less knew why. My memory had been getting worse these past few days. I kept forgetting whether I'd eaten or not, so I'd eat when I was hungry and skip meals when I wasn't. And lately, I'd been feeling so down that I just didn't feel like eating.

As my memory continued to deteriorate, I was finding it harder and harder to remember things. Sometimes it felt like I couldn't even get a complete sentence out anymore.

A sudden, unsettling thought crossed my mind. I might already be in the late stages of the disease. As it progressed, I'd lose more and more of my memories, forget everyone I knew, and eventually lose my ability to speak. At that point, there'd be no point in continuing treatment.

As such, I turned back to Andrea and said, "Fine. We're even."

By the time I was done talking, I didn't feel a thing anymore. Andrea, on the other hand, visibly froze for a moment when she heard my words.

The light in her eyes suddenly disappeared.

After a beat, she spoke in a slightly hoarse voice. "Think it over a little more. We both need to cool off and give each other some time."

I kept my emotions to myself, offering only a small smile as I replied, "Alright."

After Andrea and I parted ways at the hospital, she eventually got what she'd always wanted and ended up with Spencer. I would still occasionally see their social media posts showing off how happy they were together.

Before long, I flew back to my old city and found a care facility for myself. I was afraid that once I'd truly forgotten everything, I'd no longer be able to take care of myself.

After getting everything sorted out, I made a trip back to my hometown. I wanted to bring my grandma back with me so she could live with me. But just as I got on the bus, I received the news that my grandma had passed away.

Just like that, I had lost the only family I had left in this world. After laying my grandma to rest, I returned to the city.

I quit my job, and when I saw the news that Andrea and Spencer were getting married, I deleted every last way of reaching her.

By then, I'd already lost the ability to speak. All that lingered of her in my mind were a few fleeting memories.

What I never expected was that Andrea would suddenly have second thoughts just before marrying Spencer. She went back to the rental apartment where we'd once lived together.

But when the door opened, a stranger was standing there. No matter where she looked, she couldn't find any trace of me.

Tony and Anya had long since moved away. And I'd never told anyone about my memory loss.

She broke down and sobbed, but there was nothing she could do to change anything. Then one day, Jason spotted her from a distance while he was out on the street.

He told her the truth. "Vincent was diagnosed with Alzheimer's before he proposed to you. He's in a care facility now.

"He told me not to interfere with your life. But since you're asking about him now, I think the least you could do is apologize to him. If you hadn't taken all his savings, he wouldn't have gone all the way to Ivalor for you.

"His grandma fell critically ill right around then, and she passed away. He couldn't save his family, and he couldn't save himself either. Do whatever you want with that information."

I never imagined that my actions would end up costing Vincent his whole life. When I was in Ivalor, I never expected that the day Vincent and I said goodbye would become the last time we ever existed together in his memories.I had said goodbye to the 18-year-old version of me that Vincent had kept in his memories. Once I got together with Spencer, our relationship wasn't nearly as wonderful as I'd imagined. He still did whatever he wanted and never made the slightest effort to accommodate me. I was nothing more than a small, insignificant part of his life. But in Vincent's eyes, I had been his whole world. That meant that I'd thrown my whole world away. The decision to break up with Spencer came after I caught him with another woman. Only later did I realize how rotten he was at his core, and that he would never change.I'd once tried so hard to become part of his world. But in the end, all I wanted was to find my way back to Vincent.A month later, I came back to the place whe

And I, too, had finally moved on from the past. After Andrea left, I found out that Jason had been shouldering the burden of supporting the two of us all these years. He was the one who'd been searching for doctors for me all along. In his heart, someone as young as me simply shouldn't have had to suffer from such a disease so soon. He'd always been hoping I'd visit his place again for a drink, and that we'd get the chance to watch a race together someday.Although we'd given up racing a long time ago, there was no harm in watching a race and fulfilling a wish we'd never gotten around to. It gave the two of us something to enjoy together as well. That day, we took a case of beer up into the mountains and stayed there from midnight until dawn. We watched the entire race from the hillside, then sat together and watched the sun come up.Watching the sunrise became our way of saying goodbye to the past. As long as life went on, so would fate. With that in mind, I went on to live out

Jason was a businessman through and through, so he figured out what Andrea was getting at almost instantly.Without a second thought, he pulled out a card and tossed it at Andrea. "Take this. Use it."Tears suddenly welled up in Andrea's eyes. She wanted to thank him a thousand times over, but she didn't even know where to begin.Jason said helplessly, "I know you want to help Vincent, but you have to know your limits. And there's something you need to understand. This disease is simply next to incurable. Still, Vincent once saved my life, so whatever you need, as long as it's within my means, don't hesitate to ask."With a definite answer at last, Andrea couldn't hide how thankful she felt. But once she was gone, Jason sighed helplessly. He knew Andrea was basically throwing herself into a hopeless situation. But deep down, he hoped that one day, I'd really come to my senses again.Andrea began going from hospital to hospital, actively asking doctors about cases like mine and sea

Even after getting caught, Spencer still looked utterly arrogant. He shot Andrea a cold look, a mocking laugh escaping his lips. "Andrea, you really think way too highly of yourself. Since when have I ever needed to rely on anyone else?"Sounds to me like you're delusional, just like that fool in the wheelchair."I watched as Andrea's expression slowly turned cold. Never in a million years had she imagined Spencer was this kind of person. She'd simply been blind when she was younger, spending so long thinking Spencer was better than me.After Andrea kicked Spencer out, she abruptly sank to the floor and burst into tears. Maybe this life really had worn her down. Otherwise, she wouldn't have completely broken down like that over Spencer's cruel words.Maybe Andrea had had it the hardest in our relationship. After all, she'd always been torn between two men. She'd missed out on the version of me who was still in his right mind and fallen for the reckless, wild Spencer instead. So

That day, I was sitting in the care facility courtyard, soaking up the sun, when a woman with a sorrowful look suddenly barged in.She hurried over and stared intently at my face before exclaiming, "Vincent!"I had no idea who Vincent was, so I lowered my head and ignored her. Everyone there called me Vince. And I didn't know who she was talking to.When she came up to me and tried to touch me, I yelled, "Who are you? Why are you touching me?"Startled by my reaction, she backed off and stood a few feet away, fumbling for words but too afraid to come any closer. The doctors and nurses noticed the commotion, but they were already used to seeing things like this. They didn't recognize the woman, so one of them approached her to ask."Hello, miss. Could you tell me what your relationship with Mr. Shafer is?"Andrea managed a smile. "I'm his…"The words were on the tip of her tongue, but she couldn't get them out. And really, who was she to me now?Andrea thought it over for a lon
