Chapter 3

Penulis: 62386
For a long time, I thought I was just stressed from work and working too hard. It wasn't until I mentioned my symptoms to the doctor during a routine company health check that I realized something might be wrong with me.

He immediately recommended that I get some tests done. That was when I finally found out about my disease.

I could no longer give Andrea the life she deserved. Still, we'd shared so many beautiful memories.

Back in college, Spencer was the guy everyone had a crush on. And Andrea was known as the prettiest woman in her department from the moment she stepped onto campus.

Andrea, Spencer, and I all grew up in the same residential neighborhood.

Ever since Spencer was a kid, he had been everyone's idea of the perfect child. He was good-looking and got along with just about anyone. As for me, I was just someone who wasn't very good with words.

Andrea was naturally cheerful, but whenever Spencer ignored her, she'd come hang out with me instead.

Since she was undeniably beautiful, I couldn't help being attracted to her. So every time she approached me, I gladly accepted all the warmth she showed me.

In our sophomore year, she confessed to me. I was over the moon and said yes right away.

It wasn't until later that I realized she'd come to me because Spencer, the guy she liked, had left the country with another woman right after they graduated.

She really was going through a rough time back then. So I stayed by her side the whole time, taking her to the best food spots off campus and to the aquarium to look at the fish.

Little by little, I helped her pull herself out of that dark place with all the care and support I gave her. That was why, even now, I still couldn't wrap my head around her running back to Spencer.

He was obviously a man who kept making promises to her but never followed through, someone who'd hurt her over and over again.

As I sat on my bed, replaying everything in my head, Tony's parting words came back to me.

It finally dawned on me that Andrea might have been lying to me. Otherwise, why would she take my bank card just to go on a business trip?

I picked up my phone and called Jason Lawson, Andrea's boss. He was one of my closest friends, and it was through my relationship with him that Andrea got her job in the first place.

Andrea wasn't even qualified for the job, so she wouldn't have gotten it without him. Jason picked up on the first ring, a grin already in his voice. "Well, look who's calling! What's the occasion?"

"Jason, does Andrea have a business trip lined up right now?"

"Nope. She took three days off. I figured you two had plans to travel together."

In that moment, I knew Andrea had lied. I just had no idea where she and Spencer had actually gone.

But the very next day, a forwarded post landed in my messages. It was from Tony.

The photo captured a breathtaking display of the aurora borealis across the sky. Andrea and Spencer had their faces pressed together, grinning happily at the camera.

The location tag showed Ivalor, and the caption read, "Let's be together for the rest of our lives."

After everything I'd seen, even the ache in my heart had started to fade into numbness. All that remained on my face was indifference.

Stone-faced, I bought a ticket to Ivalor. By the next day, I'd already landed.

I got lucky. After asking around for a bit with the photo, I managed to find the exact location. There was only one hotel nearby, too.

The front desk told me they couldn't give out guest information. With no other options, I sat by the entrance and waited.

About an hour later, I spotted Andrea in the hotel lobby. I called out to her from a distance. "Andrea!"

The moment Andrea heard my voice, she thought she'd imagined it. She stared at me in disbelief before finally realizing it was really me.

I never imagined that my actions would end up costing Vincent his whole life. When I was in Ivalor, I never expected that the day Vincent and I said goodbye would become the last time we ever existed together in his memories.I had said goodbye to the 18-year-old version of me that Vincent had kept in his memories. Once I got together with Spencer, our relationship wasn't nearly as wonderful as I'd imagined. He still did whatever he wanted and never made the slightest effort to accommodate me. I was nothing more than a small, insignificant part of his life. But in Vincent's eyes, I had been his whole world. That meant that I'd thrown my whole world away. The decision to break up with Spencer came after I caught him with another woman. Only later did I realize how rotten he was at his core, and that he would never change.I'd once tried so hard to become part of his world. But in the end, all I wanted was to find my way back to Vincent.A month later, I came back to the place whe

And I, too, had finally moved on from the past. After Andrea left, I found out that Jason had been shouldering the burden of supporting the two of us all these years. He was the one who'd been searching for doctors for me all along. In his heart, someone as young as me simply shouldn't have had to suffer from such a disease so soon. He'd always been hoping I'd visit his place again for a drink, and that we'd get the chance to watch a race together someday.Although we'd given up racing a long time ago, there was no harm in watching a race and fulfilling a wish we'd never gotten around to. It gave the two of us something to enjoy together as well. That day, we took a case of beer up into the mountains and stayed there from midnight until dawn. We watched the entire race from the hillside, then sat together and watched the sun come up.Watching the sunrise became our way of saying goodbye to the past. As long as life went on, so would fate. With that in mind, I went on to live out

Jason was a businessman through and through, so he figured out what Andrea was getting at almost instantly.Without a second thought, he pulled out a card and tossed it at Andrea. "Take this. Use it."Tears suddenly welled up in Andrea's eyes. She wanted to thank him a thousand times over, but she didn't even know where to begin.Jason said helplessly, "I know you want to help Vincent, but you have to know your limits. And there's something you need to understand. This disease is simply next to incurable. Still, Vincent once saved my life, so whatever you need, as long as it's within my means, don't hesitate to ask."With a definite answer at last, Andrea couldn't hide how thankful she felt. But once she was gone, Jason sighed helplessly. He knew Andrea was basically throwing herself into a hopeless situation. But deep down, he hoped that one day, I'd really come to my senses again.Andrea began going from hospital to hospital, actively asking doctors about cases like mine and sea

Even after getting caught, Spencer still looked utterly arrogant. He shot Andrea a cold look, a mocking laugh escaping his lips. "Andrea, you really think way too highly of yourself. Since when have I ever needed to rely on anyone else?"Sounds to me like you're delusional, just like that fool in the wheelchair."I watched as Andrea's expression slowly turned cold. Never in a million years had she imagined Spencer was this kind of person. She'd simply been blind when she was younger, spending so long thinking Spencer was better than me.After Andrea kicked Spencer out, she abruptly sank to the floor and burst into tears. Maybe this life really had worn her down. Otherwise, she wouldn't have completely broken down like that over Spencer's cruel words.Maybe Andrea had had it the hardest in our relationship. After all, she'd always been torn between two men. She'd missed out on the version of me who was still in his right mind and fallen for the reckless, wild Spencer instead. So

That day, I was sitting in the care facility courtyard, soaking up the sun, when a woman with a sorrowful look suddenly barged in.She hurried over and stared intently at my face before exclaiming, "Vincent!"I had no idea who Vincent was, so I lowered my head and ignored her. Everyone there called me Vince. And I didn't know who she was talking to.When she came up to me and tried to touch me, I yelled, "Who are you? Why are you touching me?"Startled by my reaction, she backed off and stood a few feet away, fumbling for words but too afraid to come any closer. The doctors and nurses noticed the commotion, but they were already used to seeing things like this. They didn't recognize the woman, so one of them approached her to ask."Hello, miss. Could you tell me what your relationship with Mr. Shafer is?"Andrea managed a smile. "I'm his…"The words were on the tip of her tongue, but she couldn't get them out. And really, who was she to me now?Andrea thought it over for a lon

Andrea added, "The doctor said you have severe hypoglycemia. If I hadn't gotten you to the hospital in time, you could've died."I stayed silent as I more or less knew why. My memory had been getting worse these past few days. I kept forgetting whether I'd eaten or not, so I'd eat when I was hungry and skip meals when I wasn't. And lately, I'd been feeling so down that I just didn't feel like eating. As my memory continued to deteriorate, I was finding it harder and harder to remember things. Sometimes it felt like I couldn't even get a complete sentence out anymore.A sudden, unsettling thought crossed my mind. I might already be in the late stages of the disease. As it progressed, I'd lose more and more of my memories, forget everyone I knew, and eventually lose my ability to speak. At that point, there'd be no point in continuing treatment. As such, I turned back to Andrea and said, "Fine. We're even."By the time I was done talking, I didn't feel a thing anymore. Andrea, on th
