Chapter 2

Author: Porridge & Crab
Autumn had settled hard over Port Haven, with the night wind carrying a bitter chill even a heater couldn't chase away.

Lucian lay in bed, wrapped tight in blankets, but the cold crept into his limbs anyway until his whole body felt numb. On nights like this, he craved warmth, even for just a moment.

Half asleep, he felt something warm settle in close behind him. Without thinking, he turned and wrapped his arms around it, the way a fish gasping for air finally finds water. He held the woman close, feeling her warmth. Finally, a single tear slipped from the corner of his eye and landed silently on the pillow.

As the first rays of morning light slipped through the curtains, Lucian rose carefully, trying not to wake the woman still sleeping beside him. He padded quietly into the kitchen and started making breakfast. He measured out every seasoning with care, terrified of mixing up sugar and salt again, tasting each dish before adding anything else.

The housekeeper, Emma Dalton, stood in the kitchen doorway, shaking her head helplessly as she watched him work.

Lucian arranged the plates just so, then reminded her, "If she wakes up and wants to eat, make sure you heat it back up first."

"Of course, I'll remember," Emma said.

Lucian took off his apron, rubbed his tired eyes, and changed into a suit to head to the office. Before he left, he pulled a folder from his bag and set it gently on the nightstand.

-

At Starlight Tower, Lucian called Sabrina Chase into his office. She was the company's general counsel. They'd gone to the same college, where she'd been a couple of years ahead of him.

"Sabrina, I need you to work out everything, all my shares in Starlight and every asset under my name."

"Are we talking about a notarization?" Sabrina asked.

Lucian shook his head. "After I die, all of it goes to Vivian."

Sabrina froze. She knew how sick he was, but hadn't expected him to make such a decision.

She was quiet for a few seconds before she said, "Transferring your shares like that could destabilize the company. I'd think hard about this."

"I already have."

Lucian was about to go on when his face suddenly went pale, his body swaying.

Sabrina caught him immediately, panic in her voice. "Are you alright? I'm taking you to the hospital!"

Lucian gripped her arm hard, fighting through the pain to force out a weak smile. "I'm fine. Give me a second."

Sabrina knew how stubborn he was, so she just helped him sit down. That was when the office door swung open. Vivian stood in the doorway, her eyes cold and mocking, staring at Lucian's hand still gripping Sabrina's arm.

Lucian let go immediately. Sweat beaded on his forehead from the pain, but he still managed a weak smile. "What are you doing here?"

This was the first time she'd ever come looking for him on her own.

Vivian's laugh cut through the quiet office like a blade. "If I hadn't come, I wouldn't have gotten to see this little show. Looks like Mr. Ashford and his general counsel get pretty comfortable in the office."

Sabrina's hands clenched into fists at the sudden accusation, but Lucian tugged lightly at her sleeve, a silent plea for calm.

Vivian noticed the small gesture, and it only made her angrier. "What, wasn't last night enough for you? Couldn't even wait till the office opened to get your fix?"

Lucian's face went from pale to bright red. Her words landed like needles in his chest. She always hit exactly where it hurt the most.

"If you can't live without a woman around, why even bother giving me this?" Vivian pulled out the divorce papers Lucian had left on the nightstand that morning. "Perfect timing, because I've wanted a divorce for a while now too."

She walked to the desk, grabbed a pen, and signed her name without hesitation, then tossed the papers to the floor like trash.

She shot Sabrina a cold smirk, watching her nearly shake with fury. "Ms. Chase, you can sort out the rest with my lawyer. Here's a piece of advice. This man's heart runs deeper than you'd think. Oh, right, you're a lawyer. I'm sure you're plenty sharp yourself. No wonder you two get along so well."

"Vivian!" Sabrina shouted.

If Lucian hadn't grabbed her arm, she might have lunged at her. Vivian scoffed and slammed the door on her way out.

Sabrina picked the papers up off the floor, her hands shaking. "Is a woman like that really worth all this?"

Lucian leaned back against the couch, his voice low as he replied, "Divorce is better than being widowed... She's wanted this since the day we got married. I'm just finally giving it to her."

Sabrina looked at him, her face full of quiet heartbreak. She missed the Lucian she used to know, the one who used to be bright, easy, and full of laughter. But ever since he married Vivian, he'd become a different person entirely. Even with his life slipping away now, he was still thinking only of that woman.

'If only I'd known, I would have fought for him from the start, even if he never loved me back. At least he wouldn't be hurting like this,' Sabrina thought bitterly.

"After looking deeper into it, my father found out the real Caleb died in the same accident that took our mother. It turned out that this man was Caleb's old classmate. He'd stumbled across my brother's diary by chance and decided to use it, slipping slowly into our family under a stolen identity."At least his devotion to my father was genuine. So, even after the truth came out, my father chose to stay silent and let him keep his place as the Ashford family's second son," Nolan explained. As Vivian listened, she felt a tangle of emotions rise inside her. Bitterly, she thought that if only she'd taken the time to really listen back then, maybe she could have avoided all those years of misunderstanding and separation."Why didn't you tell me any of this back then?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly.Nolan managed a bitter, self-mocking smile. "Because I loved you. I didn't want you to face a truth that complicated, and I definitely didn't want you to realize you'd given your h

At the hospital, everything was calm and quiet.Nolan lay resting in bed, the swelling on the left side of his face mostly gone now after the ice packs. The gash on his forehead was closed with a few careful stitches, but it still stood out sharply against his skin. With him left shaken by everything that happened, the doctors had given him something to help him sleep. Now he drifted in uneasy dreams, his brow furrowed as if still fighting through some nightmare.Vivian sat beside his bed, watching his tired face with a complicated tenderness in her eyes. Thank goodness she'd made it there in time. Otherwise, the outcome could have been so much worse. She lightly touched her phone screen, then called Lily. Her voice carried an absolute resolve as she asked, "Where's Caleb?""He's been taken into custody. They're questioning him now," Lily replied.Vivian's tone turned ice-cold as she ordered, "Tell them not to go easy on him. Don't worry about sparing me any embarrassment.""Und

Caleb's smile twisted into something monstrous. "Prison? I don't care about any of that anymore! What's the point of living if Vivian's not by my side? But seeing you so pathetic like this feels better than I ever imagined!"He stood up abruptly, a manic grin spreading across his face. "Oh, right, my dear brother. I actually prepared a special gift for you."He clapped his hands, and two large men dragged in a woman, tossing her roughly to the ground. It was Sabrina. Her hands and feet were bound, and her face was flushed in an unnatural shade of red.Panic surged through Nolan. "Sabrina, are you okay?""She's fine. Just enjoyed a little special treatment, that's all." Caleb crouched down and started untying Nolan's restraints. "Lucian, I know Sabrina's always had feelings for you. Today, I'll be your matchmaker and help you two along."Caleb's words made the depth of his cruelty instantly clear to Nolan.Fury exploded inside him. "Caleb, you've completely lost your mind!""Mayb

On the drive back from the cemetery, Nolan's thoughts churned in a hopeless tangle, impossible to settle. He'd wanted to draw a clean line between him and Vivian, and finally find some peace of his own. But her words had landed like a hammer blow straight to his heart, sending ripples through everything he thought he'd resolved.Vivian's name had been carved into his heart since he was practically a boy. Letting go of her would feel like tearing away a piece of himself. It was something incredibly painful and practically impossible. And yet, those old wounds ran too deep to ignore, leaving him questioning whether he even had the courage to break free from the past and start something new with her all over again.Right then, his gaze landed on the elegant velvet box sitting quietly on his desk, and he sank into deep, troubled thought.Just as his mind churned with a thousand conflicting feelings, his phone rang sharply, shattering the quiet. The screen showed a message from Sabrina

Nolan froze, too stunned to move. His thoughts raced. She was proposing to him? He hadn't seen this coming at all.It took him a while to find his voice again, disbelief lacing every word as he asked, "Vivian, are you sure you understand what you're doing right now? Or better yet, are you sure you really know everything about the person sitting in front of you?"Vivian's gaze stayed locked on his face, unwavering. "I know exactly what I'm doing. The person I want to spend the rest of my life with is you."Ever since their trip to Meridian City, that thought had taken root deep inside her. And no matter how many times Nolan insisted on keeping his distance, she couldn't bring herself to let him go.She'd originally planned to take things slow. The daily flowers were just a small gesture, a quiet confession in itself. But the fear of making the same mistake and losing this precious gift again had only grown stronger with each passing day.Nolan looked at her, at the urgency and dete

The confusion on Nolan's face only fueled Chris' need to gossip. He pulled up a chair and settled in comfortably as he recounted, "Mr. Vance, since you've been overseas so long, you probably don't know the local gossip! All these years, every eligible bachelor in Port Haven has tried courting Ms. Lane, and every single one struck out. It's all because she's still carrying around this flawless image of her ex-husband in her heart."Nolan couldn't help a faint smile. "If he was really that perfect, why did he end up as just her ex?"Chris' expression shifted immediately. "That's just how women are sometimes! Don't appreciate what's right in front of them until it's gone, then suddenly realize who their true love really was."He paused mid-sentence, grabbing his phone and scrolling furiously, before looking up with a serious expression. "Mr. Vance, scratch everything I just said! I don't think you should go for it with Ms. Lane after all!""Why the sudden change of heart?" Nolan aske
