Chapter 3

작가: Porridge & Crab
That afternoon, Lucian and Vivian finalized the paperwork at the courthouse. Both signed the divorce papers, and everything was settled. There were no more ties left between them.

Five years of marriage, over just like that.

Walking out of the building, Lucian caught sight of a man sitting in the back seat of Vivian's car. Even through the tinted window, he could feel that man's stare, sharp as a needle, pointed straight at him.

The door opened slowly, and Caleb stepped out with an uneasy smile on his face.

"It's windy out here. Careful you don't catch a cold," Vivian said tenderly, rushing to his side to steady him.

"I'm fine, Vivian," Caleb answered softly.

He turned to Lucian and called out affectionately. Lucian frowned, but said nothing.

Caleb always came across as so gentle and sweet. His voice was soft and his eyes were always a little wet, the kind of person that made people want to protect him. But Lucian knew better. Caleb wasn't nearly as simple as he looked, and he definitely wasn't...

From the first day Caleb set foot in the Ashford household, everything had fallen exactly into place for him, like it was all part of some careful plan.

Lucian had already dug up most of the truth. But his life was almost over, and he didn't want to drag any of it into the light now. He couldn't bring himself to let Vivian know that the man she'd loved for years was nothing but a con artist.

She was so proud. Lucian didn't want to watch her break over something like that. Some truths were better buried along with him.

But she would never understand any of that. Watching Lucian ignore Caleb, her expression darkened.

"What, now that we're divorced, you don't care about anyone anymore? Can't even acknowledge your own brother?" she snapped, her tone growing colder with every word.

"Vivian, he's probably not in a good mood since he just got divorced. Don't be too hard on him," Caleb chimed in with an understanding smile.

The moment Vivian looked away, Caleb shot him a smug, knowing look and added, "Lucian, Vivian wants to take me to Grand Pavilion for dinner. Want to come with us?"

Lucian took a slow breath, forcing down the ache in his chest. "I have somewhere to be. I'll head out."

Even with his heart in pieces, he refused to let any of it show.

But he walked too fast, so fast he nearly forgot his body couldn't keep up anymore. Everything went black for a second, and he crashed into a flowerbed by the sidewalk, pain shooting through his leg. He gritted his teeth and forced himself toward the car, stubborn to the end.

Watching him stumble away, Vivian felt an odd urge rise up in her. She suddenly had the impulse to go help him. When had Lucian become so fragile?

Noticing the strange look on her face, Caleb quickly looped his arm through hers. "Vivian, let's go eat. You wouldn't believe how bad the hospital food's been lately."

She turned her attention back to the man at her side, running a hand through his hair as feelings she couldn't quite untangle swirled inside her.

"Alright. Let's celebrate my divorce, and the fact that we can finally be together without anyone questioning it," she said.

A hint of satisfaction colored Caleb's laugh, though his eyes drifted toward the spot where Lucian had disappeared. A cold glint flashed in his gaze. He'd been worried Lucian might expose the fact that he wasn't related to the Ashford family at all, and was simply a liar.

Why? For the first time, Caleb felt genuinely confused. Did Lucian really not love Vivian anymore? Was he really willing to give up his place as her husband and her love, just like that?

-

Two hours later, Lucian called a moving company and headed to Hawthorne Estate. It was the house he and Vivian had bought together when they got married, every detail chosen with care. He'd once foolishly believed that it would become their home.

But reality was crueler than any fantasy. All of it had just been wishful thinking on his part.

He packed everything into two moving trucks. When he finished, he left the house keys and a notebook on the dining table.

"Emma, I'm leaving. Please take good care of her from now on," he said, his voice carrying a trace of reluctance.

Emma nodded, confusion written all over her face. Just a few days ago, Lucian had been making breakfast for Vivian like always. How had they suddenly ended up divorced?

As Lucian was leaving, Vivian's car pulled into the driveway. The two cars slowed as they passed each other, close enough to almost touch, yet like two parallel lines that would never cross, each heading in the opposite direction.

Vivian stepped out of her car and watched Lucian's car disappear down the road until it was gone. She suddenly realized that something important was slipping away from her, little by little.

Back inside, she called out to Emma, asking, "Did he say anything before he left?"

"No, Ms. Lane. Mr. Ashford just asked me to take good care of you." Emma held out a small plate of dessert. "He made this chocolate mousse right before he left. Would you like to try it?"

In the past, Vivian wouldn't have given anything Lucian made a second glance. But today, for some reason, she took a small bite anyway.

She froze. The mousse tasted exactly like the one her mother used to make.

Emma set the plate down on the table and slipped back into the kitchen, leaving Vivian staring at the notebook Lucian left behind. She opened the first page and recognized his handwriting right away. The more she read, the darker her eyes grew.

The notebook listed everything she loved to eat, detailed recipes, and notes he had written to himself along the way. She closed the last page, her feelings a tangled mess inside her chest. She realized she'd never really known Lucian at all.

"After looking deeper into it, my father found out the real Caleb died in the same accident that took our mother. It turned out that this man was Caleb's old classmate. He'd stumbled across my brother's diary by chance and decided to use it, slipping slowly into our family under a stolen identity."At least his devotion to my father was genuine. So, even after the truth came out, my father chose to stay silent and let him keep his place as the Ashford family's second son," Nolan explained. As Vivian listened, she felt a tangle of emotions rise inside her. Bitterly, she thought that if only she'd taken the time to really listen back then, maybe she could have avoided all those years of misunderstanding and separation."Why didn't you tell me any of this back then?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly.Nolan managed a bitter, self-mocking smile. "Because I loved you. I didn't want you to face a truth that complicated, and I definitely didn't want you to realize you'd given your h

At the hospital, everything was calm and quiet.Nolan lay resting in bed, the swelling on the left side of his face mostly gone now after the ice packs. The gash on his forehead was closed with a few careful stitches, but it still stood out sharply against his skin. With him left shaken by everything that happened, the doctors had given him something to help him sleep. Now he drifted in uneasy dreams, his brow furrowed as if still fighting through some nightmare.Vivian sat beside his bed, watching his tired face with a complicated tenderness in her eyes. Thank goodness she'd made it there in time. Otherwise, the outcome could have been so much worse. She lightly touched her phone screen, then called Lily. Her voice carried an absolute resolve as she asked, "Where's Caleb?""He's been taken into custody. They're questioning him now," Lily replied.Vivian's tone turned ice-cold as she ordered, "Tell them not to go easy on him. Don't worry about sparing me any embarrassment.""Und

Caleb's smile twisted into something monstrous. "Prison? I don't care about any of that anymore! What's the point of living if Vivian's not by my side? But seeing you so pathetic like this feels better than I ever imagined!"He stood up abruptly, a manic grin spreading across his face. "Oh, right, my dear brother. I actually prepared a special gift for you."He clapped his hands, and two large men dragged in a woman, tossing her roughly to the ground. It was Sabrina. Her hands and feet were bound, and her face was flushed in an unnatural shade of red.Panic surged through Nolan. "Sabrina, are you okay?""She's fine. Just enjoyed a little special treatment, that's all." Caleb crouched down and started untying Nolan's restraints. "Lucian, I know Sabrina's always had feelings for you. Today, I'll be your matchmaker and help you two along."Caleb's words made the depth of his cruelty instantly clear to Nolan.Fury exploded inside him. "Caleb, you've completely lost your mind!""Mayb

On the drive back from the cemetery, Nolan's thoughts churned in a hopeless tangle, impossible to settle. He'd wanted to draw a clean line between him and Vivian, and finally find some peace of his own. But her words had landed like a hammer blow straight to his heart, sending ripples through everything he thought he'd resolved.Vivian's name had been carved into his heart since he was practically a boy. Letting go of her would feel like tearing away a piece of himself. It was something incredibly painful and practically impossible. And yet, those old wounds ran too deep to ignore, leaving him questioning whether he even had the courage to break free from the past and start something new with her all over again.Right then, his gaze landed on the elegant velvet box sitting quietly on his desk, and he sank into deep, troubled thought.Just as his mind churned with a thousand conflicting feelings, his phone rang sharply, shattering the quiet. The screen showed a message from Sabrina

Nolan froze, too stunned to move. His thoughts raced. She was proposing to him? He hadn't seen this coming at all.It took him a while to find his voice again, disbelief lacing every word as he asked, "Vivian, are you sure you understand what you're doing right now? Or better yet, are you sure you really know everything about the person sitting in front of you?"Vivian's gaze stayed locked on his face, unwavering. "I know exactly what I'm doing. The person I want to spend the rest of my life with is you."Ever since their trip to Meridian City, that thought had taken root deep inside her. And no matter how many times Nolan insisted on keeping his distance, she couldn't bring herself to let him go.She'd originally planned to take things slow. The daily flowers were just a small gesture, a quiet confession in itself. But the fear of making the same mistake and losing this precious gift again had only grown stronger with each passing day.Nolan looked at her, at the urgency and dete

The confusion on Nolan's face only fueled Chris' need to gossip. He pulled up a chair and settled in comfortably as he recounted, "Mr. Vance, since you've been overseas so long, you probably don't know the local gossip! All these years, every eligible bachelor in Port Haven has tried courting Ms. Lane, and every single one struck out. It's all because she's still carrying around this flawless image of her ex-husband in her heart."Nolan couldn't help a faint smile. "If he was really that perfect, why did he end up as just her ex?"Chris' expression shifted immediately. "That's just how women are sometimes! Don't appreciate what's right in front of them until it's gone, then suddenly realize who their true love really was."He paused mid-sentence, grabbing his phone and scrolling furiously, before looking up with a serious expression. "Mr. Vance, scratch everything I just said! I don't think you should go for it with Ms. Lane after all!""Why the sudden change of heart?" Nolan aske
