Cecilia's POV

I looked up toward the airport entrance, where two figures were chatting and laughing.

My fiance, Marcus Benton, was casually helping his childhood friend, Bianca Warner, with her luggage.

Bianca put on a frail expression. "I only said I wanted to visit Solaviera, and you left Cecilia behind like that. Won't she be mad?"

Marcus glanced back at me and dropped his voice. "Don't say that, Bianca. Cecilia understands your situation."

"Still, she looks upset. I feel terrible seeing her like that," Bianca said, her eyes welling up.

"What does she have to be upset about?" Marcus paused, then offered a soft word of comfort. "You haven't been well these past two years, so it's only natural I look after you. She's never made a fuss. I'll just say a few sweet words to reassure her. Don't worry about any of that. Just focus on enjoying the trip."

It was true.

In Marcus' eyes, I was always reasonable and easygoing. Even if I got upset, a little effort on his part was all it took to smooth things over.

Never mind that when he made breakfast, mine was just a plain sandwich, while Bianca got homemade chicken broth tailored for her sensitive stomach.

Never mind that his gifts to Bianca were always far more expensive than whatever he gave me.

As long as he coaxed me a little, I was expected to move past it.

I used to let it go because I cared about Marcus and didn't want to make things difficult for him.

But that was no excuse for him to keep pushing me aside.

I stared at him quietly. "Marcus, if we don't get married this time, there won't be another chance."

Marcus didn't take my words seriously at all. He brushed me off with the tone of an adult soothing a child. "Why are you acting out like this? There will be plenty of chances to get married. There's no need to pick a fight over this.

"I'm taking Bianca to Solaviera this time, but I'll make it up to you twice over when I get back. Just stay home and wait for me. Our wedding isn't going anywhere."

Before he could finish, Bianca wrapped her arms around his again. "Marcus, being able to travel with you like this is enough to make me happy for the rest of my life."

Then, turning to me, she added, "Don't worry, Cecilia! I'll be sure to take good care of Marcus!"

Marcus turned back to me. "Head home first, Cecilia. I'll text you when we land."

I watched their retreating figures without making a move to stop them. Instead, I let out a faint smile and dialed Papa's number.

"Papa, I lost the bet. I'll return to the family like you asked. Before I leave, I'd like to borrow your private helicopter for a few days. I want to visit Solaviera."

Shortly after hanging up, a text from Marcus popped up.

"You did great today. Thanks for not making a scene. Be good, and I'll bring you back some souvenirs."

I stared at the message for a few seconds before a Facebook notification from Bianca flashed on my screen.

It was a photo of her flashing a peace sign, beaming beside Marcus.

The caption read, "The final trip of my life! So grateful to have the most important person by my side to watch the sea."

Someone commented, "Where's Cecilia? Her fiance is traveling with you. Didn't she make a fuss?"

Bianca replied with an emoji, "She's busy with work. She didn't have time to join."

I scrolled past the post and exited the app without any expression.

Another message came in from Marcus.

"Did you see Bianca's Facebook post? She's been trying to get 999 likes. She said she wants to see how many people support her before she leaves. Go give her a like too, Cecilia. It'll make her happy."

I ignored it.

Five minutes later, he sent several more messages.

"Why aren't you replying? Did you fall asleep?"

"Alright, get some rest early tonight."

"Since I'm not there to tuck you in, don't kick off the blankets. Don't catch a cold."

Looking at these texts, I found them utterly laughable.

Back when he actually mattered to me, I used to reply instantly. This time, not only did I leave him on read, but I also muted his notifications.

After all, I would be arriving in Solaviera by helicopter tomorrow. I was going to enjoy a trip entirely on my own.

As for little things like having someone to tuck me in, I could handle that just fine on my own.

Cecilia's POVSix months later, by Lake Bellavere in Meravino, my fiance, Gabriele Venturi, walked up from behind me."There's news about Marcus," he said casually while placing his phone on the table in front of me. "Care to hear it?"Without even looking up, I said, "Go ahead.""He got to the bottom of everything. Bianca was never sick. She forged every single diagnostic report with the help of a cousin. The one working at that community clinic, remember?"That file you gave him had everything, including internal clinic logs, cross-checked timestamps from the social security system, and even a recorded confession from the cousin."All those threats of taking her own life, depression episodes, and emotional meltdowns Bianca pulled over the years were complete theater. Her sole goal was to make sure he'd never marry you."I turned a page of the book in my hand, the paper rustling beneath my fingertips. "And then?""Marcus kicked Bianca out. Her family cut ties with her too, and

Cecilia's POVIt wasn't a heavy blow, but it was loud enough.Marcus didn't cup his face. He didn't even flinch away. He just stood there with his head turned to the side, a muscle in his jaw twitching. The sunlight caught his face, illuminating every bit of the turbulence surging in his eyes.Looking at his expression, I suddenly felt a wave of unfamiliarity. In five years, I had never hit him or raised a hand against anyone. In his mind, I was probably always the gentle, yielding woman who would forever wait for him to turn around. So when that slap landed, the shock on his face far outweighed the pain. All those fragmented pieces in his mind were likely finally coming together right now.Why Ceciora Capital withdrew its funding, why the ultimate owner turned out to be a Caruso, why I had worked for five years without a salary, and what I said at Solaviera Airport—"If we don't get married this time, there won't be another chance."The moment I uttered those words, I had alrea

Third-Person POVIt was Bianca who had instructed the PR department to issue that statement in Marcus' name. When Marcus saw it, he was in a company meeting. His phone buzzed with a notification. As he tapped to open it, his brow furrowed. "Who published this?""…Ms. Warner said you gave your approval," Dante answered cautiously.Marcus picked up his phone, intending to retract it. As his finger hovered over the screen, a WhatsApp message from Bianca popped up."Marcus, it's better to end the pain quickly. Give her a sign. If she truly cares about you, she'll come running back. If she doesn't, it just means she never loved you that much anyway, so you lose nothing."Marcus stared at the line of text. After a long silence, he placed his phone face down on the table. In the end, he didn't retract the announcement. That afternoon, he sent another message to Cecilia. He knew she had blocked his number, so he had switched to a new one."The engagement is off. If you don't come back

Third-Person POVEverything Cecilia wore and used had been bought with her own money, spent straight out of the savings she had accumulated before ever entering Benton Corp. And Marcus hadn't even noticed that she wasn't earning a single cent.Bianca suddenly pushed open the conference room door and walked in. "Marcus, aren't you done yet? I brought you—"When she noticed the tense expressions in the room, her footsteps faltered. "What's going on?"Marcus stared at her.Bianca blinked, returning his gaze with an innocent look."Bianca." Marcus spoke up. "Did you tell HR back then that Cecilia didn't need to be paid?"Bianca froze for a brief second before quickly breaking into a smile. "Oh, you mean that? I was just making a casual comment back then. Besides, Cecilia never brought it up with you either, did she? If she doesn't even care, why are you making such a big deal out of it?""She never mentioned being out of money to me," Marcus said."That's because you provided mor

Third-Person POVMarcus' hand froze on the phone. "What was their reason?"Dante replied, "They didn't give a clear one, just cited strategic adjustments. But our funding pool for next quarter heavily relies on their injection. If that money gets cut off, all three product lines in development will have to stop, let alone our plans to expand the chain in the second half of the year."Marcus frowned. "Who's the person in charge over there? I'll reach out directly.""I already tried." Dante's voice sank even lower. "They said they're only acting as custodians. The real investor is someone else, and they don't have the authority to make the calls.""Who's the investor?"Dante hesitated before saying, "We ran a check. Ceciora Capital is just a shell. When I trace back three layers of ownership, I found that the ultimate controlling entity points back to… someone with the surname Caruso."Marcus was stunned. "Caruso?""Yes, the Caruso family. But the records are extremely limited. T

Third-Person POVMarcus stared at the cold gray tick beside his message, frozen for a long moment.Bianca was still sleeping in the hospital bed, her breathing steady. There was even a faint smile playing on her lips. Marcus sat on the chair beside the bed, his back rigid and straight. He tried calling again, but the same busy tone greeted him.He sent a message on WhatsApp, only for it to remain stuck on a single tick. After exiting the chat, he scrolled through his contacts for Cecilia's name, tapped it, and called again. It was still the same busy tone. The phone burned in his grip. Marcus suddenly stood up, the chair legs scraping against the floor with a harsh, grating screech.Bianca frowned and rolled over but didn't wake.As he hurried out of the ward, a scene from this afternoon suddenly flashed through his mind.Cecilia had fallen to the ground, her elbow taking the force of the blow. He had been in such a rush to carry Bianca away that he hadn't even spared her a b
