Chapter 1

I glanced back at the empty, quiet restaurant.

The chocolate cake I’d spent all afternoon baking had already begun melting under the soft lights.

I spent two full months planning every detail for tonight.

Yet, James wasn’t picking up his phone.

I pulled out my phone and dialed his number one more time.

After two rings, his deep, gentle voice came through the speaker.

“Diana will be back in town tonight. I have to pick her up, so I’ll be home late.”

I held the phone to my ear, staring through the floor-to-ceiling glass at the two figures across the street.

A tight lump formed in my throat.

Before I could say a word, the line went dead.

He didn’t give me a chance to protest.

He had completely forgotten that tonight was our fifth anniversary.

My phone vibrated again. Another text came from the unknown number.

“Remember how you used to joke about who he would choose if he had to pick between you two?

“He was lying to you every single time.”

I took a sharp breath.

Pain shot through my chest like needle pricks.

The restaurant manager walked up to me, stepping softly.

“Miss Shaw? Everything is set for the proposal. When would you like to start?”

I turned to face her, forcing my voice to stay level.

“Cancel it. I’ll pay the full fee. Just tear it all down.”

After all, the woman he wanted to marry wasn't me.

James and I had been together for five years.

For three of those years, I had been waiting for him to settle down.

We used to talk about our future, our home, our kids.

But every time I brought up marriage, he brushed it off with excuses.

I thought I was putting too much pressure on him. I thought he was just nervous.

So, I decided to take the lead and propose to him tonight.

Turned out, I was just fooling myself.

The manager gave me a look of deep pity, but she quietly signaled her staff to clear the floor.

I sat alone in the empty restaurant.

Only the chocolate cake remained on the table.

I baked it myself. It was his favorite flavor, not mine.

I stared at it for a long time, then picked up the knife and cut a large slice.

The rich chocolate melted on my tongue, but it tasted bitterly sweet.

I kept forcing forkfuls into my mouth, one after another.

By the time I finished the slice, tears were trickling down my cheeks.

I didn't know how long I cried.

When my senses finally returned, I pushed myself up from the chair.

My legs were completely numb. I had to hold onto the edge of the table for a long moment just to keep my balance.

I looked out the window toward the jewelry store across the street.

The lights were off. They were gone.

---

I dragged my exhausted body back to our apartment.

The living room lights were on.

Laughter drifted out into the hallway.

My hand froze on the door handle. Through the crack in the door, I could see everything inside clearly.

James was sitting on the couch, carefully peeling an apple.

Diana was lounging beside him, her arm resting casually across his lap.

His face was deadly serious, but I couldn't help laughing.“Are you proposing to me right now? Isn't this a little sudden?”Seeing my laugh, panic instantly flooded his face. His cheeks turned bright red.“Of course it doesn't count as a real proposal! If you say yes, I'll take you to pick out a ring tomorrow morning.“I’ll make up for everything, I swear…”“I accept.”Lucas froze, completely speechless. He moved to hug me in excitement, but stopped mid-air, afraid he would make me uncomfortable. He began pulling his hand back awkwardly.I smiled, stepped forward, and buried myself into his chest.---When I told my parents, they made me confirm it three times before they believed it.Once they knew I was serious, a huge weight lifted off their shoulders. The wedding prep moved fast. Before I knew it, our big day had arrived.Dressed in my white wedding gown, Lucas lifted me into the bridal car.Through the window, a familiar figure flashed past my eyes.---James ca

I stayed at a cozy guest house run by a sweet old lady.I curled up on a lounge chair in the sunny courtyard, cuddling the local cat.Every morning, I woke up to incredible views right outside my window.I watched the sunrise on the beach.I climbed snow-capped mountains I used to only dream about.Once, I wanted to experience all these places with James. Now, I didn't need him.---On a rainy afternoon, I was lying in my hotel room when I came across old photos of James on my phone.I expected a pang of grief or nostalgia.Instead, my heart stayed completely still.I deleted every single picture, one by one.I wiped him from my camera roll as if he had never existed in my life.My phone rang. It was my mom.“Wendy, did you break up with James?”I stayed silent.“He came looking for us a few days ago,” she sighed. “Your father and I figured it out.”My dad snatched the phone from her, his voice booming with excitement.“Good riddance, sweetheart! I knew that guy was b

He picked up the white box by his feet.Inside was a pair of matching rings. He took them out, examining them closely. Engraved inside the bands were our initials. While James was staring in shock, his phone rang.He answered frantically, ready to shout my name, but a stranger’s male voice stopped him cold.“Hello, sir? Are you Wendy Shaw’s fiancé?“Two days ago, she rented our venue for a proposal event.”“She canceled at the last minute, but she left a wrapped gift behind. We can’t reach Miss Shaw on her phone. “Would you be able to come pick it up?”James’s grip on the phone tightened. His throat felt completely blocked, unable to squeeze out a single sound.“Sir? Are you still there?”“Yes,” James finally rasped. His voice was terrifyingly raw.“Send me the address. I’ll be right there.”The second the call disconnected, he bolted out the door like a madman. He had never seen those rings before. He had no idea I was planning to propose to him on our anniversary.

My chest felt suffocated, every breath a heavy burden.Yet as I looked down at James, a strange, absolute calm settled over me.I tossed his phone back onto the couch, grabbed my suitcase and walked away.If he never intended to marry me, then I wasn't going to waste another second on him.For five long years, I had poured everything into taking care of his daily life. I hadn't even taken a proper vacation for myself.I submitted my resignation letter to my company that very night.A quick check of my savings gave me peace of mind, it was more than enough to travel the world for a while.I booked a ticket for the earliest flight out.At the boarding gate, I took one last look back. This was likely my final time in this city.A place packed with memories, none of which I ever wanted to revisit.---When James opened his eyes, he was still lying on the couch in the empty banquet hall.He groaned, pressing a hand against his pounding head.Silence hung heavy in the air.The

My hand lost its strength, gradually slipping from the hem of his shirt. The spark of hope that had just flickered in my chest sank into total darkness. He didn't remember our fifth anniversary at all.My phone buzzed again with that familiar vibration. I picked it up to find another text from the unknown number.“He was only with you to make his childhood sweetheart jealous when she went abroad. Three years later, and you’re still dancing on his string.“It got boring, though. Now that he has laid it all out for you... you’re not still holding out hope, are you?”I pressed my nails into my palms, my eyes burning fiercely.“I’ll make my own decision,” I typed back.---I woke up early the next morning. When I opened my eyes, James was already gone from the bed.Diana’s high-pitched laugh echoed from the living room.“James, this oatmeal is amazing!”I pulled back the covers and walked out. James was wearing an apron, standing in the kitchen making breakfast. In five yea

She caught empty air, her smile instantly freezing.A heartbeat later, that helpless, pitiable look was back on her face as she turned to James.“James, is she mad at me? I swear I didn't mean anything by it...”James stood up, towering over me.“It was just a joke, Wendy. Is this really necessary?”His tone was ice-cold. The look in his eyes held not a single trace of warmth.“Diana just landed tonight. Who are you giving an attitude to?”I looked up at him, suddenly finding the man in front of me terrifyingly foreign.“If I’m not welcome here, I should just go.”Diana grabbed her suitcase from the corner, making a show of heading for the door.James stopped her instantly.Panic flickered across his face, but when he turned to look at me, his eyes held only disgust.“Where do you think you’re going? It’s midnight. What is a young woman like you going to do out there alone?“Remember high school when you walked home in the dark and got lost? We spent the whole night lookin
