Chapter 4

ผู้เขียน: Yule Widow

My hand lost its strength, gradually slipping from the hem of his shirt.

The spark of hope that had just flickered in my chest sank into total darkness.

He didn't remember our fifth anniversary at all.

My phone buzzed again with that familiar vibration. I picked it up to find another text from the unknown number.

“He was only with you to make his childhood sweetheart jealous when she went abroad. Three years later, and you’re still dancing on his string.

“It got boring, though. Now that he has laid it all out for you... you’re not still holding out hope, are you?”

I pressed my nails into my palms, my eyes burning fiercely.

“I’ll make my own decision,” I typed back.

---

I woke up early the next morning.

When I opened my eyes, James was already gone from the bed.

Diana’s high-pitched laugh echoed from the living room.

“James, this oatmeal is amazing!”

I pulled back the covers and walked out.

James was wearing an apron, standing in the kitchen making breakfast.

In five years together, he had never made breakfast for me once.

Yet here he was, cooking for Diana the second she got back.

Morning light poured over the two of them. The sight made my stomach turn.

Noticing me, James glanced over, his tone completely flat.

“There’s oatmeal in the pot. Get some yourself.”

“No, thanks. I have to step out.”

A flash of annoyance crossed James’s face.

Diana looked up at me with a bright smile.

“You’re coming to my welcome party tonight, right? You have to come!”

I stared at the sparkling ring on her finger and gave a faint nod.

“I will.”

---

I wandered the streets alone for hours.

I had nowhere to go. I just couldn't stand being in the same room with them.

When I got back home in the evening, the apartment was completely empty.

I dragged out a dusty suitcase and began packing my clothes.

It wasn't until I had cleared everything out that I realized just how deeply my life had been woven into this space.

I took the proposal ring I had bought for him and tossed it straight into the living room trash.

If he didn't want to marry me, there was no point in keeping it.

My phone buzzed again.

“Aren't you coming to the party? You might miss something you never expected.”

I stared at the screen, hesitating.

After a long silence, I touched up my makeup, grabbed my suitcase and called a cab to the venue.

---

The banquet hall was blindingly bright.

From across the room, I saw Diana clinging tightly to James’ arm, standing right at the center of the crowd.

Even over the loud music, the whispers reached my ears.

“Childhood sweethearts really belong together.”

“Watch it, James has a girlfriend.”

“What do you know? The new flame never beats the old love.”

I ignored them and slipped into a quiet corner.

After a few rounds of drinks, James was completely wasted.

He slumped back on the couch.

Diana leaned in, whispering softly as she tried to help him up, “James, let me take you home.”

Drunk as he was, James pulled his arm away from her by instinct.

“Where’s Wendy... get Wendy...”

Diana’s smile froze instantly.

She caught sight of me nearby and forced a fake grin as she walked over.

“Sorry to bother you, Wendy.”

I ignored her, stepping right past to reach James.

As I bent down to lift him, his phone slid out of his pocket and hit the floor.

A flood of notification banners popped up, catching my eye.

I tried his thumbprint, and the screen unlocked.

A new message from Diana sat at the top. I tapped into it and scrolled up through their chat history.

When I reached the texts from yesterday, my blood ran cold.

This was not “the ‘James’ from three years ago or the one that will be in my future."

It was James all along.

He was letting Diana use his phone to play a sick game and laugh at my expense.

His face was deadly serious, but I couldn't help laughing.“Are you proposing to me right now? Isn't this a little sudden?”Seeing my laugh, panic instantly flooded his face. His cheeks turned bright red.“Of course it doesn't count as a real proposal! If you say yes, I'll take you to pick out a ring tomorrow morning.“I’ll make up for everything, I swear…”“I accept.”Lucas froze, completely speechless. He moved to hug me in excitement, but stopped mid-air, afraid he would make me uncomfortable. He began pulling his hand back awkwardly.I smiled, stepped forward, and buried myself into his chest.---When I told my parents, they made me confirm it three times before they believed it.Once they knew I was serious, a huge weight lifted off their shoulders. The wedding prep moved fast. Before I knew it, our big day had arrived.Dressed in my white wedding gown, Lucas lifted me into the bridal car.Through the window, a familiar figure flashed past my eyes.---James ca

I stayed at a cozy guest house run by a sweet old lady.I curled up on a lounge chair in the sunny courtyard, cuddling the local cat.Every morning, I woke up to incredible views right outside my window.I watched the sunrise on the beach.I climbed snow-capped mountains I used to only dream about.Once, I wanted to experience all these places with James. Now, I didn't need him.---On a rainy afternoon, I was lying in my hotel room when I came across old photos of James on my phone.I expected a pang of grief or nostalgia.Instead, my heart stayed completely still.I deleted every single picture, one by one.I wiped him from my camera roll as if he had never existed in my life.My phone rang. It was my mom.“Wendy, did you break up with James?”I stayed silent.“He came looking for us a few days ago,” she sighed. “Your father and I figured it out.”My dad snatched the phone from her, his voice booming with excitement.“Good riddance, sweetheart! I knew that guy was b

He picked up the white box by his feet.Inside was a pair of matching rings. He took them out, examining them closely. Engraved inside the bands were our initials. While James was staring in shock, his phone rang.He answered frantically, ready to shout my name, but a stranger’s male voice stopped him cold.“Hello, sir? Are you Wendy Shaw’s fiancé?“Two days ago, she rented our venue for a proposal event.”“She canceled at the last minute, but she left a wrapped gift behind. We can’t reach Miss Shaw on her phone. “Would you be able to come pick it up?”James’s grip on the phone tightened. His throat felt completely blocked, unable to squeeze out a single sound.“Sir? Are you still there?”“Yes,” James finally rasped. His voice was terrifyingly raw.“Send me the address. I’ll be right there.”The second the call disconnected, he bolted out the door like a madman. He had never seen those rings before. He had no idea I was planning to propose to him on our anniversary.

My chest felt suffocated, every breath a heavy burden.Yet as I looked down at James, a strange, absolute calm settled over me.I tossed his phone back onto the couch, grabbed my suitcase and walked away.If he never intended to marry me, then I wasn't going to waste another second on him.For five long years, I had poured everything into taking care of his daily life. I hadn't even taken a proper vacation for myself.I submitted my resignation letter to my company that very night.A quick check of my savings gave me peace of mind, it was more than enough to travel the world for a while.I booked a ticket for the earliest flight out.At the boarding gate, I took one last look back. This was likely my final time in this city.A place packed with memories, none of which I ever wanted to revisit.---When James opened his eyes, he was still lying on the couch in the empty banquet hall.He groaned, pressing a hand against his pounding head.Silence hung heavy in the air.The

She caught empty air, her smile instantly freezing.A heartbeat later, that helpless, pitiable look was back on her face as she turned to James.“James, is she mad at me? I swear I didn't mean anything by it...”James stood up, towering over me.“It was just a joke, Wendy. Is this really necessary?”His tone was ice-cold. The look in his eyes held not a single trace of warmth.“Diana just landed tonight. Who are you giving an attitude to?”I looked up at him, suddenly finding the man in front of me terrifyingly foreign.“If I’m not welcome here, I should just go.”Diana grabbed her suitcase from the corner, making a show of heading for the door.James stopped her instantly.Panic flickered across his face, but when he turned to look at me, his eyes held only disgust.“Where do you think you’re going? It’s midnight. What is a young woman like you going to do out there alone?“Remember high school when you walked home in the dark and got lost? We spent the whole night lookin
