Chapter 3

ผู้เขียน: Yule Widow

She caught empty air, her smile instantly freezing.

A heartbeat later, that helpless, pitiable look was back on her face as she turned to James.

“James, is she mad at me? I swear I didn't mean anything by it...”

James stood up, towering over me.

“It was just a joke, Wendy. Is this really necessary?”

His tone was ice-cold. The look in his eyes held not a single trace of warmth.

“Diana just landed tonight. Who are you giving an attitude to?”

I looked up at him, suddenly finding the man in front of me terrifyingly foreign.

“If I’m not welcome here, I should just go.”

Diana grabbed her suitcase from the corner, making a show of heading for the door.

James stopped her instantly.

Panic flickered across his face, but when he turned to look at me, his eyes held only disgust.

“Where do you think you’re going? It’s midnight. What is a young woman like you going to do out there alone?

“Remember high school when you walked home in the dark and got lost? We spent the whole night looking for you.”

Tears started streaming down Diana’s cheeks.

James patted her shoulder gently, guiding her back into the living room.

“Just stay here. I already got the guest room ready for you. You can head back in the morning.”

He didn't look at me once while he spoke.

I stood by the dining table, still clutching a pair of silverware.

Grease coated my palm, thick and impossible to rub off.

My phone vibrated with another text from the unknown number.

“Looking at the time, I bet he’s making her stay the night.”

My hands trembled violently as I stared at the screen.

“Not only that, you saw the ring on her finger, right?

“Want to know why he refused to marry you all this time?

“Because Diana was coming back. He was waiting for her.”

My eyes burned so badly tears welled up.

I didn't reply. I just flipped the phone face-down on the table.

---

James settled Diana into the guest room, heating up milk for her and tucking in her blanket.

He showered her with relentless care, a level of thoughtfulness he had never once shown me.

Passing the guest room, I could hear soft whispers from inside.

“Go to sleep. I’ll take you shopping for new clothes tomorrow.”

The room gradually grew quiet.

James tiptoed out of the guest room, shutting the door softly behind him.

He turned around and spotted me standing in the shadow of the hallway.

“Why aren't you asleep yet?”

His voice was hushed, clearly worried about waking Diana.

I said nothing.

He stepped closer and pulled me gently into his arms.

I went stiff. His arm wrapped over my shoulder, his chin resting against the top of my head.

“Wendy, stop being mad. I was out of line earlier and I’m sorry.”

“We’ve been together for so long. You can’t just talk about breaking up over something like this.

“I’ve always seen Diana as a little sister. Don't take it to heart.”

A faint crack formed in my hardened heart.

“Then when are we getting married?”

I looked up at him, but all I caught in his eyes was avoidance.

“Just give it a little more time. Once the company stabilizes, I’ll give you a wedding everyone will envy.”

He patted my head.

“It’s late. Let’s get some rest.”

He started turning toward the master bedroom.

I reached out on instinct and grabbed the hem of his shirt.

“James, do you even remember what today is?”

Confusion flashed across his face before he gave a fond, indulgent smile.

“Is there some piece of jewelry or a dress you’ve been eyeing again? I’ll have my assistant buy it for you tomorrow morning.

“Diana’s welcome party is tomorrow. Let’s just get some sleep.”

His face was deadly serious, but I couldn't help laughing.“Are you proposing to me right now? Isn't this a little sudden?”Seeing my laugh, panic instantly flooded his face. His cheeks turned bright red.“Of course it doesn't count as a real proposal! If you say yes, I'll take you to pick out a ring tomorrow morning.“I’ll make up for everything, I swear…”“I accept.”Lucas froze, completely speechless. He moved to hug me in excitement, but stopped mid-air, afraid he would make me uncomfortable. He began pulling his hand back awkwardly.I smiled, stepped forward, and buried myself into his chest.---When I told my parents, they made me confirm it three times before they believed it.Once they knew I was serious, a huge weight lifted off their shoulders. The wedding prep moved fast. Before I knew it, our big day had arrived.Dressed in my white wedding gown, Lucas lifted me into the bridal car.Through the window, a familiar figure flashed past my eyes.---James ca

I stayed at a cozy guest house run by a sweet old lady.I curled up on a lounge chair in the sunny courtyard, cuddling the local cat.Every morning, I woke up to incredible views right outside my window.I watched the sunrise on the beach.I climbed snow-capped mountains I used to only dream about.Once, I wanted to experience all these places with James. Now, I didn't need him.---On a rainy afternoon, I was lying in my hotel room when I came across old photos of James on my phone.I expected a pang of grief or nostalgia.Instead, my heart stayed completely still.I deleted every single picture, one by one.I wiped him from my camera roll as if he had never existed in my life.My phone rang. It was my mom.“Wendy, did you break up with James?”I stayed silent.“He came looking for us a few days ago,” she sighed. “Your father and I figured it out.”My dad snatched the phone from her, his voice booming with excitement.“Good riddance, sweetheart! I knew that guy was b

He picked up the white box by his feet.Inside was a pair of matching rings. He took them out, examining them closely. Engraved inside the bands were our initials. While James was staring in shock, his phone rang.He answered frantically, ready to shout my name, but a stranger’s male voice stopped him cold.“Hello, sir? Are you Wendy Shaw’s fiancé?“Two days ago, she rented our venue for a proposal event.”“She canceled at the last minute, but she left a wrapped gift behind. We can’t reach Miss Shaw on her phone. “Would you be able to come pick it up?”James’s grip on the phone tightened. His throat felt completely blocked, unable to squeeze out a single sound.“Sir? Are you still there?”“Yes,” James finally rasped. His voice was terrifyingly raw.“Send me the address. I’ll be right there.”The second the call disconnected, he bolted out the door like a madman. He had never seen those rings before. He had no idea I was planning to propose to him on our anniversary.

My chest felt suffocated, every breath a heavy burden.Yet as I looked down at James, a strange, absolute calm settled over me.I tossed his phone back onto the couch, grabbed my suitcase and walked away.If he never intended to marry me, then I wasn't going to waste another second on him.For five long years, I had poured everything into taking care of his daily life. I hadn't even taken a proper vacation for myself.I submitted my resignation letter to my company that very night.A quick check of my savings gave me peace of mind, it was more than enough to travel the world for a while.I booked a ticket for the earliest flight out.At the boarding gate, I took one last look back. This was likely my final time in this city.A place packed with memories, none of which I ever wanted to revisit.---When James opened his eyes, he was still lying on the couch in the empty banquet hall.He groaned, pressing a hand against his pounding head.Silence hung heavy in the air.The

My hand lost its strength, gradually slipping from the hem of his shirt. The spark of hope that had just flickered in my chest sank into total darkness. He didn't remember our fifth anniversary at all.My phone buzzed again with that familiar vibration. I picked it up to find another text from the unknown number.“He was only with you to make his childhood sweetheart jealous when she went abroad. Three years later, and you’re still dancing on his string.“It got boring, though. Now that he has laid it all out for you... you’re not still holding out hope, are you?”I pressed my nails into my palms, my eyes burning fiercely.“I’ll make my own decision,” I typed back.---I woke up early the next morning. When I opened my eyes, James was already gone from the bed.Diana’s high-pitched laugh echoed from the living room.“James, this oatmeal is amazing!”I pulled back the covers and walked out. James was wearing an apron, standing in the kitchen making breakfast. In five yea
