Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Yule Widow

I stood frozen in the doorway, feeling like an intruder in my own home.

James was the first to notice me. He frowned, his face tight with irritation.

“Wendy, where have you been? Diana just landed tonight.

“She heard how great your cooking is and wouldn't stop asking for a home-cooked meal. She’s been waiting so long she’s starving.”

Diana immediately bounced over with a sweet smile.

“Sorry to bother you! The food abroad was awful and I couldn’t wait to taste your famous cooking.”

James didn't say a word to defend me.

He didn't ask where I’d been all evening. He didn't care why I was late.

His eyes held only cold impatience.

I said nothing. I set my purse by the door and walked straight into the kitchen.

The icy water from the tap made my fingers go numb.

Laughter drifted in from the living room, muffled by the loud hum of the exhaust fan.

I couldn't make out what they were saying, but the tone was intimate.

When I brought out the dishes, James was setting down a neatly arranged fruit platter.

He handed Diana a small fork, then reached over with a napkin to gently dab a smear of chip dust from the corner of her mouth.

“Eat some fruit first while she finishes up.”

Diana laughed, popping a piece of apple into her mouth before using the exact same fork to feed a slice to James.

“You’re still as sweet as ever,” she murmured. “You used to pack peeled fruit for me every day in high school.”

A rare, warm smile touched James’ lips.

“You always hated the skins.”

I set the final bowl of soup on the table with a heavy thump.

James finally looked up at me. He scanned the table, his eyes stopping on the soup.

His brow instantly furrowed.

“Wendy, why didn't you add cilantro?”

My hands froze on the ties of my apron.

“Diana loves cilantro. Didn't you know that?” His voice carried a sharp edge of blame.

He remembered what Diana loved, but he completely forgot that I was deadly allergic to it.

On our very first date, I had accidentally eaten some.

My skin broke out in hives and I choked for air.

He had run red lights driving me to the ER, weeping by my hospital bed and swearing he would never let it happen again.

Now, everything had changed.

Diana stepped up and yanked gently on his arm.

“Don't be hard on her, James. It’s fine, I don't have to take that.”

She hid behind him like a wronged victim, turning me into the villain in my own home.

She tugged him down to sit at the table.

As I pulled out my chair, a sparkle caught my eye.

Right on Diana’s ring finger sat a breathtaking diamond ring.

It was brand new and gleaming under the chandelier.

Diana noticed my gaze. She raised her hand and flashed the ring right in front of me.

“Isn't it gorgeous? James got it for me today as a welcome-back gift.”

Seeing me stare in silence, she leaned in closer to James with a playful grin.

“James, remember when we were kids and you kept telling your parents you were going to marry me when you grew up?”

She quickly turned to me with an apologetic pout. “Oh, please don't misunderstand! I didn't mean anything by that.”

I looked down at my own bare left hand.

Then, I forced a faint smile.

“Of course not.”

I looked James dead in the eye.

“James, we’re done. I’m leaving you.”

The moment the words left my mouth, James slammed his fork onto the table with a loud clatter.

“What the hell is wrong with you? Stop throwing a tantrum!”

Diana gasped and reached out to grab my hand.

The instant her fingers brushed against mine, I jerked my arm back.

His face was deadly serious, but I couldn't help laughing.“Are you proposing to me right now? Isn't this a little sudden?”Seeing my laugh, panic instantly flooded his face. His cheeks turned bright red.“Of course it doesn't count as a real proposal! If you say yes, I'll take you to pick out a ring tomorrow morning.“I’ll make up for everything, I swear…”“I accept.”Lucas froze, completely speechless. He moved to hug me in excitement, but stopped mid-air, afraid he would make me uncomfortable. He began pulling his hand back awkwardly.I smiled, stepped forward, and buried myself into his chest.---When I told my parents, they made me confirm it three times before they believed it.Once they knew I was serious, a huge weight lifted off their shoulders. The wedding prep moved fast. Before I knew it, our big day had arrived.Dressed in my white wedding gown, Lucas lifted me into the bridal car.Through the window, a familiar figure flashed past my eyes.---James ca

I stayed at a cozy guest house run by a sweet old lady.I curled up on a lounge chair in the sunny courtyard, cuddling the local cat.Every morning, I woke up to incredible views right outside my window.I watched the sunrise on the beach.I climbed snow-capped mountains I used to only dream about.Once, I wanted to experience all these places with James. Now, I didn't need him.---On a rainy afternoon, I was lying in my hotel room when I came across old photos of James on my phone.I expected a pang of grief or nostalgia.Instead, my heart stayed completely still.I deleted every single picture, one by one.I wiped him from my camera roll as if he had never existed in my life.My phone rang. It was my mom.“Wendy, did you break up with James?”I stayed silent.“He came looking for us a few days ago,” she sighed. “Your father and I figured it out.”My dad snatched the phone from her, his voice booming with excitement.“Good riddance, sweetheart! I knew that guy was b

He picked up the white box by his feet.Inside was a pair of matching rings. He took them out, examining them closely. Engraved inside the bands were our initials. While James was staring in shock, his phone rang.He answered frantically, ready to shout my name, but a stranger’s male voice stopped him cold.“Hello, sir? Are you Wendy Shaw’s fiancé?“Two days ago, she rented our venue for a proposal event.”“She canceled at the last minute, but she left a wrapped gift behind. We can’t reach Miss Shaw on her phone. “Would you be able to come pick it up?”James’s grip on the phone tightened. His throat felt completely blocked, unable to squeeze out a single sound.“Sir? Are you still there?”“Yes,” James finally rasped. His voice was terrifyingly raw.“Send me the address. I’ll be right there.”The second the call disconnected, he bolted out the door like a madman. He had never seen those rings before. He had no idea I was planning to propose to him on our anniversary.

My chest felt suffocated, every breath a heavy burden.Yet as I looked down at James, a strange, absolute calm settled over me.I tossed his phone back onto the couch, grabbed my suitcase and walked away.If he never intended to marry me, then I wasn't going to waste another second on him.For five long years, I had poured everything into taking care of his daily life. I hadn't even taken a proper vacation for myself.I submitted my resignation letter to my company that very night.A quick check of my savings gave me peace of mind, it was more than enough to travel the world for a while.I booked a ticket for the earliest flight out.At the boarding gate, I took one last look back. This was likely my final time in this city.A place packed with memories, none of which I ever wanted to revisit.---When James opened his eyes, he was still lying on the couch in the empty banquet hall.He groaned, pressing a hand against his pounding head.Silence hung heavy in the air.The

My hand lost its strength, gradually slipping from the hem of his shirt. The spark of hope that had just flickered in my chest sank into total darkness. He didn't remember our fifth anniversary at all.My phone buzzed again with that familiar vibration. I picked it up to find another text from the unknown number.“He was only with you to make his childhood sweetheart jealous when she went abroad. Three years later, and you’re still dancing on his string.“It got boring, though. Now that he has laid it all out for you... you’re not still holding out hope, are you?”I pressed my nails into my palms, my eyes burning fiercely.“I’ll make my own decision,” I typed back.---I woke up early the next morning. When I opened my eyes, James was already gone from the bed.Diana’s high-pitched laugh echoed from the living room.“James, this oatmeal is amazing!”I pulled back the covers and walked out. James was wearing an apron, standing in the kitchen making breakfast. In five yea

She caught empty air, her smile instantly freezing.A heartbeat later, that helpless, pitiable look was back on her face as she turned to James.“James, is she mad at me? I swear I didn't mean anything by it...”James stood up, towering over me.“It was just a joke, Wendy. Is this really necessary?”His tone was ice-cold. The look in his eyes held not a single trace of warmth.“Diana just landed tonight. Who are you giving an attitude to?”I looked up at him, suddenly finding the man in front of me terrifyingly foreign.“If I’m not welcome here, I should just go.”Diana grabbed her suitcase from the corner, making a show of heading for the door.James stopped her instantly.Panic flickered across his face, but when he turned to look at me, his eyes held only disgust.“Where do you think you’re going? It’s midnight. What is a young woman like you going to do out there alone?“Remember high school when you walked home in the dark and got lost? We spent the whole night lookin
