Chapter 4

Author: Springs
I didn't stay at the house. That place didn't belong to me anymore.

The staff had started calling Ryan "Sir."

He left Emily's lace underwear on the guest room floor like a trophy. I could hear them through the walls—their noise, their passion. Everything they had.

When I walked out, the maids were already gossiping.

"Daniel is such a joke. No marriage license, not even a wedding photo on the wall."

"Please. He's been coasting on that sad backstory for years. I'm so over it."

"We've sent Ryan so many gifts behind his back. He's the only one who didn't know."

"No license, and those kids are both dead. I overheard Ms. Stanton saying she's going to kick him out with nothing."

Nothing?

We'll see who ends up with nothing.

The next day, I went out just to clear my head. I'd been so buried in the company for so long, I'd forgotten what the street looked like.

I was about to search for a place to eat when someone ripped the phone from my hand and smashed it on the pavement.

"You bastard. Finally found you."

My eyes blew wide. A fear I thought I'd buried rose up in my throat. I stepped back.

"Winston. What are you doing here? This is Seacrest. Don't try anything."

My father, Winston Kirkwood, spat on the ground, lunged forward, and grabbed me by the hair.

"You think Emily's still coming to save you? Guess who told me where you were? I hear she never even married you. So what—you're her side piece now?"

He dragged out the word "side piece." People on the street turned to stare.

"That's not true!" I shouted.

Winston slapped me across the face.

"I don't give a damn what you are. Your old man's broke. Give me money."

The crowd gasped. Someone started to step forward to help.

Then Ryan walked up, phone already recording.

"Everyone, look! This is my wife's loverboy and his father! Yesterday, he tried to have me thrown out of my wife's company. Just as shameless as his father."

The people who had been about to help stopped. Their sympathetic looks turned into disdain.

"He even wanted my wife to kick me and my son out. I can't believe he had the nerve."

Ryan lifted his bangs, showing off the small cut on his forehead. His eyes went wet.

"He did this too."

Then he shoved the phone in my face and smiled.

"Take a look at what everyone's saying about you in the livestream."

The comments scrolled past in a blur. "Gold digger." "Trash." "Homewrecker." Every word cut.

Winston stood back, enjoying the show. Ryan grabbed my chin.

"Your mother's grave. Your kid's grave. They're both out on the east end, aren't they?"

My heart tightened instantly.

"What are you going to do?"

He smiled like it was nothing.

"Get on your knees. Slap yourself three times. Say you're a shameless homewrecker. Then I won't do anything."

My fists clenched. My teeth ground together.

Ryan pulled up photos on his phone. The graves. My mother's. My son's.

"Your father doesn't want you. Emily doesn't love you anymore. Those two—they're the only ones who ever gave a damn about you, right?"

My mother's last smile. My baby's wrinkled little face. They flashed through my mind.

I didn't think anymore. I dropped to my knees in the middle of the street.

My hand shook as I slapped myself.

"I'm… a shameless homewrecker…"

The crowd's whispers scraped against my ears. Ryan laughed and pushed the camera into my face.

When I finally stood up, my eyes met Emily's through the crowd.

She had been watching the whole time.

I lost it. I screamed at her. Why? Why?

She just pushed me off. Like I was nothing. Like I didn't matter.

"Oh, relax. Ryan was just having a little fun."

Then sirens ripped through everything.

A team of officers rushed in and cuffed Emily's wrists.

"Ms. Stanton, you're under arrest for trafficking illegal pharmaceuticals."

The document was signed when we first founded the company, plus my shares—the actual amount I held far exceeded Emily's."If any of you want to follow Emily so badly, why don't you go join her inside? I hear she's pretty lonely in there."The room went dead quiet."All of Emily's illegal earnings have been seized, along with the fines. Stanton Industries won't be what it was. If you stay, I'll take care of you. If you want to leave, I won't stop you."Someone snorted on the spot, grabbed their things, and walked out. But others stayed. To keep the cash flow moving, I sold off most of the properties—including the villa Emily and I had shared. She'd said it wasn't my home anyway. I didn't want to go back. No point keeping it.When I went to pack my things, Winston was waiting by the gate."You bastard. Living the good life while your old man's been out here for days."He lunged for me. My bodyguard caught his arm."Let go! You know who I am? I'm his father!"Daniel, you get ric

"Just because she wants to see me doesn't mean I have to go. Does she still think she's the big CEO?"I took the jacket my assistant handed me and scoffed.I didn't go to see Emily. Still, she managed to get a letter to me. I didn't even look at it. Told my assistant to burn it.I won't pretend I've cut her out of my heart completely. The girl she used to be—the one from our younger days—she's still a light I carry with me. I'm afraid of that old feeling creeping back. But I'm not that same lovesick kid anymore.Emily started trying to reach me every way she could. Little notes left in random places. Strange forwarded phone calls. She got annoying enough that I finally had to go see her.She looked thinner. Smaller. Her hair had grown out. And the woman who always cared so much about appearances—her nails were uneven, jagged. When she saw me, her eyes lit up."Daniel! You came."For a second, I saw her again. The girl who used to wait for me outside in the snow, eyes sparkling

Emily was taken away.Ryan, surprisingly, didn't chase after her crying. He stood in the corner with his son, his eyes darting around like a rat in a kitchen. After the court adjourned, I noticed him slipping through the crowd, following the judge into the back chambers. What was left behind was a mess. A complete disaster. But it was better than being kicked out with nothing. And I knew I could handle it.I told my assistant to keep an eye on Ryan. I didn't trust him not to pull something. That night, my phone rang."Mr. Kirkwood, we have a problem. Ryan just transferred all of Stanton Industries' assets to an offshore account. He's heading to the airport now. He's flying to Lithuas."I had eyes on him the whole time. I don't know when he did this."The live feed from Stanton's private airport came through.Ryan was dragging a suitcase with one hand and holding Jamie's with the other. As if he felt the camera on him, he looked up and smiled. He mouthed two words, slow and d

"Your Honor. These are the electronic communications between Emily Stanton and the overseas firm. They document the entirety of their transactions—seven years, forty-three banned pharmaceuticals, illegal profits totaling several billion."The courtroom erupted.Even the judge, who had seen more than his share of major cases, looked taken aback."Forty-three?" someone in the audience whispered, loud enough for everyone to hear. "I thought it was just a few. How many people has she hurt? Does she have any conscience at all?"Emily's face turned to stone. The cool composure she'd walked in with was gone. Her hair had come loose from its pin.She turned on me, eyes blazing. "I destroyed all those records. Where did you get them?"Her gaze drilled into me—suspicion, accusation, like I was the enemy."Were you planning this all along?"My chest tightened. Even now, after everything, it still hurt to be looked at that way."No. I was planning to take those records to my grave. You're

The officers didn't give Emily another chance to speak. The lead sergeant gave me a short nod from across the street, and then the transport van pulled away. The crowd stood frozen, blinking at each other."Wait… that was real? The CEO of Stanton Industries just got arrested?"Ryan hadn't moved either. He stood there in the same spot, wind blowing through his hair.I turned and walked away without looking back.Ten years. Emily was brilliant, no question. That's why Stanton Industries became what it was. But ten years wasn't enough—not when you're up against old money, old families, old power. She had climbed as high as she did because her hands weren't clean.I had handed the police everything. Every record of her underground deals. I had known about them for years, but I never touched any of it.She wanted to kick me out with nothing? Fine. I would take everything.I wasn't like Ryan. I wasn't some vine that needed something to cling to. I wasn't a kept man who cried when th

Emily just raised an eyebrow and tapped the handcuffs with her finger."Daniel. You really went all out on this performance."Ryan covered his mouth and laughed. "Oh, Daniel. You think hiring a few fake cops is going to scare us? That's so naive."He tossed his hair. "Stanton Industries runs this city."The officers didn't flinch. Their faces stayed stone. They tightened their grip on Emily's arms."Ma'am, you need to come with us."When I didn't say anything, Ryan shoved me aside and grabbed at the officers' arms."Daniel, tell them to let go! You're hurting her!"This time, I just stood there and watched."Emily. I told the police everything. All of it. "Stanton Industries shot up too fast. You really think no one noticed?"Emily's head dropped. Her shoulders shook.I thought she was scared. Then she lifted her head and laughed."Daniel. All I did was have your father come here to scare you a little. That's what this is about?"She shook her head like I was being dram
