Gideon's POV

I took one last look at Mallory Spencer before rising from my seat and walking away.

"Gideon's temper is as bad as ever. It's all my fault. I told you I didn't want to come today, and now I've ruined everyone's mood…"

Hank Coleman's voice drifted from behind me, sounding as spoiled and entitled as ever, along with a hint of feigned hurt. The Coleman family's bankruptcy didn't seem to have changed his personality at all.

Unable to resist, I glanced back. Mallory had turned toward him. She was patting his shoulder as she murmured words of comfort.

…

At exactly 10:00 pm, Mallory walked through the door. She didn't even bother taking off her designer blazer before launching into a lecture.

"You should apologize to Hank tomorrow. From the moment you left the restaurant, he kept blaming himself for it."

She looked at me with disappointment in her eyes.

"You're a grown man, Gideon. So many of our friends were there today, besides Hank. You shouldn't always put your own feelings first. It's incredibly unbecoming of you."

Maybe it was because I hadn't slept well the night before, but my heart was pounding in a way that made me feel unwell.

"It was just a bowl of pomegranate seeds. Does he not have hands of his own? If he wants to eat some, why can't he peel the pomegranate himself?" I asked.

I was abruptly reminded of something that happened during our first year together.

I'd brought over a plate of mangoes and half-jokingly asked Mallory to peel them for me. She'd glanced at the plate and frowned.

"I hate doing anything that's a hassle. If eating something takes that much time and effort, I'd rather go without it. And don't even think about asking me to peel it for you."

Back then, I'd thought she hated going to the trouble of doing things for anyone. As it turned out, there were exceptions. I just wasn't one of them.

"You were all young back then. It's normal for teenage boys to mess around with each other. You shouldn't take those things so seriously. It's time to move on. Stop punishing yourself, and stop holding it against other people," Mallory chided me.

"Besides, his family has gone bankrupt. That's punishment enough."

It'd been a whole five minutes since she walked through the front door, and every word out of her mouth had been in defense of Hank, even though I hadn't said a single thing.

I stared fixedly at her, my eyes stinging as they filled with unshed tears, but I fought to keep my emotions from spilling over.

Mallory sighed, looking utterly exhausted. "See? You're doing it again. I'm trying to have a reasonable conversation with you, so why are you giving me that long face? When you act like this, Gideon, you really exhaust me."

She draped her blazer over the back of the couch. I took a deep breath, doing my best to relax my clenched jaw.

"So you still think this is just about a bowl of pomegranate seeds?"

Mallory frowned almost instinctively, a flicker of impatience crossing her eyes.

I'd put up with the situation long enough to reach my limit. My ears were ringing, and suddenly, I was back in that summer all over again.

"You were born to a penniless loser, Gideon Lyle! Why don't you just drop dead, huh?"

I didn't know if everyone's cruelty was always this senseless. This was happening all because, on the first day of school, I'd worn the same brand of sneakers as Hank.

I'd saved up for a whole year to buy mine, while he had countless pairs. Our outfits were nowhere near identical. Nevertheless, that was all it took for me to become the target of relentless bullying from Hank, the scion of a wealthy family.

Back then, whenever Hank and his friends bullied me, Mallory would always step in front of me. Time and time again, she'd pull me away from them, as if she never tired of doing so.

I'd thought she would always be on my side.

Mallory walked over and patted me on the back. "Enough about that. We only have 20 minutes left. If you keep throwing a tantrum, we'll run out of time."

Gideon's POVThe next time I saw Mallory, I was completely caught off guard. She showed up in a white dress and was holding an expensive tuxedo.Looking me in the eye, she asked, "Gideon, will you marry me? Starting today, I promise I'll introduce you to everyone. Hank has also been sentenced to seven years in prison. He'll never appear in front of you again."I know I've done a lot of things to hurt you over the years. You've always stayed by my side without fail. I thought I'd simply grown accustomed to your presence, but that wasn't it. It was only after you were gone that I gradually realized I'd fallen in love with you long ago, without even realizing it."Her expression was careful and tentative as she continued, "Will you give me another chance, Gideon? Let me be by your side again, okay?"When I didn't respond, she spoke again, "From now on, I'll tell everyone that you're my boyfriend, the man I love most!""What makes you think you deserve that?" I opened the door and stepped out, only to find a crowd of people gathered in front of the inn.Somehow, word had gotten around that my inn was full of attractive people, so the news attracted quite a few guests. I was so busy I barely had time to stop and catch my breath, let alone run into Mallory or her friends. When I came back in from the backyard, Mallory ambushed me at the door."Don't you think you're acting like one of those toxic exes who only regrets what she's lost when it's too late and desperately tries to win her ex back? Sadly for you, I'm not the soft-hearted type. I'm not interested in playing these games with you, either," I said.Mallory stared at me with a piercing gaze, as if trying to find some hint of something else in my expression."We're fully booked for tonight. You'll need to find somewhere else to stay.""I can wait for a room to open up.""It's too much trouble. There's no need f

Gideon's POVWhen I answered the phone, the person on the other end remained silent for a long time. I was just about to drop the call when a strained voice finally came through the speaker."Gideon… I messed up. I love you. I'll get someone to fix your grandma's audio recorder. Please come back. Please?"Mallory's words came out in a jumbled mess. I couldn't be bothered to listen to her."Mallory, I'm never going to agree to a private settlement with Hank.""I'm—"I ended the call without letting her finish what she had to say. I also blocked the number for good measure.…Mallory's friends noticed that the call had been cut off, and the bustle subsided a little. Her face was terrifyingly pale. She tossed her phone down irritably, looking rather dejected. One of her more foolhardy friends piped up, "Was that Gideon? Gideon's POVHank lowered his head, the corners of his mouth curling slightly."Mr. Lyle." Mallory finally looked at me, her voice perfectly even. "Sit down for now. We'll investigate this matter.""How do you intend to do that?""In accordance with company policy and procedures.""My memory card was broken in half. Which of the company's procedures fixes it for me?" I questioned.Mallory glanced at the broken memory card, a flicker of guilt passing through her eyes. But she quickly looked away."After working with you for so many years, Mr. Lyle, I'm sure you're the kind of person who would leak company secrets. As for the audio recorder, the company will compensate you for it."She knew perfectly well that nothing could replace what I'd lost, yet she still said that to me.Hank tugged on her sleeve. A car honked downstairs, its sharp blare cutting through the air.The moment I opened the door to the conference room, every pair of eyes inside locked onto me.Hank sat to Mallory's left, his body turned slightly to the side. His eyes were faintly red, and he had a wounded expression, as though he were desperately trying to hold back his emotions. My audio recorder lay on the table. A crack ran through its silver casing, snaking from top to bottom like a hideous scar. Beside it, the group chat was open on the laptop in front of Kurt Andrews, the department director. The photo I'd posted had been enlarged to fill the entire screen.Someone had replied beneath the photo, "I bet that's an edited photo."A string of agreements followed.Hank st
