Chapter 3

Author: Joyride
Gideon's POV

Mallory's expression faltered for a split second. She took half a step forward, her lips parting as if she wanted to say something. But with so many people around, all she said was, "Come to my office, Mr. Lyle."

Once the door closed, she said, "Gideon, I'll only be making things messier if I try to offer some kind of explanation. Can you please stop acting like this?"

Her voice was low, and her eyes seemed to be brimming with deep affection. She stepped toward me, reaching for my hand. I pulled away.

"I can explain what you just saw. Hank's family ran into trouble, so I helped him out. There's nothing going on between us. It's just a watch. If you want one, I'll get you something even better."

Every year, she bought my birthday gift well in advance and had it delivered to me like clockwork on my birthday.

One year, she'd given me the same leather belt she'd bought for a client.

"I just hate going to any unnecessary trouble. Besides, when it comes to gifts, it's the thought that counts."

Yet the watch Mallory gave Hank was said to be from an aristocratic family. It'd been a gift from a nobleman's wife as a token of her love for him. The watch had been named Everlasting Eternity to symbolize an everlasting relationship that would live on for all eternity.

It felt as though my heart had been stung by something. The piercing pain was impossible to ignore.

I lowered my eyes, suppressing the emotions threatening to surface.

"What about last night? Didn't you say you'd be back soon?"

Mallory instinctively rubbed her right index finger against her thumb. It was a habitual gesture she made whenever she lied.

"Those debt collectors were blocking his door. Someone with his background and upbringing doesn't know how to handle that sort of thing. I was worried about him."

I placed my resignation letter on her desk. I'd written it long ago and already signed it.

"Mallory." I stared into her eyes. "Approve it."

She was just about to lower her head and read it carefully when Hank strode in without knocking. Without even looking at my resignation letter, she signed the acknowledgment form and handed it back to me.

"Gideon, there's nothing going on between Mallory and me. You know very well that even back in high school, you're the only one she ever looked out for," Hank remarked.

"Honestly, every time this happens, it makes me look like a bully. I was just an immature teenager. You're the bigger man here, so let's just let bygones be bygones. Don't hold a grudge against me."

He stepped forward and slapped my shoulder with feigned familiarity. The gleam from the face of the antique watch on his wrist stabbed at my eyes.

My expression turned cold as I raised my hand to brush him off.

Mallory hurried over and pulled Hank behind her. "Gideon, there really is nothing going on between Hank and me. Don't drag an innocent man into this. Why are you resorting to violence?"

The corners of my mouth twitched. I could barely maintain even a mocking smile. Back then, I'd always been the one who needed her protection. Now, she stood on the opposite side, drawing a clear line between us.

Mallory quickly turned around. She grabbed a leave form from her desk, signed it, and pushed it toward me.

She made a rare show of softening her tone as she instructed me, "Just take a few days off first to clear your head."

She showed up in a white dress and was holding an expensive tuxedo.Looking me in the eye, she asked, "Gideon, will you marry me? Starting today, I promise I'll introduce you to everyone. Hank has also been sentenced to seven years in prison. He'll never appear in front of you again."I know I've done a lot of things to hurt you over the years. You've always stayed by my side without fail. I thought I'd simply grown accustomed to your presence, but that wasn't it. It was only after you were gone that I gradually realized I'd fallen in love with you long ago, without even realizing it."Her expression was careful and tentative as she continued, "Will you give me another chance, Gideon? Let me be by your side again, okay?"When I didn't respond, she spoke again, "From now on, I'll tell everyone that you're my boyfriend, the man I love most!""What makes you think you deserve that?" I opened the door and stepped out, only to find a crowd of people gathered in front of the inn.Somehow, word had gotten around that my inn was full of attractive people, so the news attracted quite a few guests. I was so busy I barely had time to stop and catch my breath, let alone run into Mallory or her friends. When I came back in from the backyard, Mallory ambushed me at the door."Don't you think you're acting like one of those toxic exes who only regrets what she's lost when it's too late and desperately tries to win her ex back? Sadly for you, I'm not the soft-hearted type. I'm not interested in playing these games with you, either," I said.Mallory stared at me with a piercing gaze, as if trying to find some hint of something else in my expression."We're fully booked for tonight. You'll need to find somewhere else to stay.""I can wait for a room to open up.""It's too much trouble. There's no need f

Gideon's POVWhen I answered the phone, the person on the other end remained silent for a long time. I was just about to drop the call when a strained voice finally came through the speaker."Gideon… I messed up. I love you. I'll get someone to fix your grandma's audio recorder. Please come back. Please?"Mallory's words came out in a jumbled mess. I couldn't be bothered to listen to her."Mallory, I'm never going to agree to a private settlement with Hank.""I'm—"I ended the call without letting her finish what she had to say. I also blocked the number for good measure.…Mallory's friends noticed that the call had been cut off, and the bustle subsided a little. Her face was terrifyingly pale. She tossed her phone down irritably, looking rather dejected. One of her more foolhardy friends piped up, "Was that Gideon? Gideon's POVHank lowered his head, the corners of his mouth curling slightly."Mr. Lyle." Mallory finally looked at me, her voice perfectly even. "Sit down for now. We'll investigate this matter.""How do you intend to do that?""In accordance with company policy and procedures.""My memory card was broken in half. Which of the company's procedures fixes it for me?" I questioned.Mallory glanced at the broken memory card, a flicker of guilt passing through her eyes. But she quickly looked away."After working with you for so many years, Mr. Lyle, I'm sure you're the kind of person who would leak company secrets. A car honked downstairs, its sharp blare cutting through the air.The moment I opened the door to the conference room, every pair of eyes inside locked onto me.Hank sat to Mallory's left, his body turned slightly to the side. His eyes were faintly red, and he had a wounded expression, as though he were desperately trying to hold back his emotions. My audio recorder lay on the table. A crack ran through its silver casing, snaking from top to bottom like a hideous scar. Beside it, the group chat was open on the laptop in front of Kurt Andrews, the department director. The photo I'd posted had been enlarged to fill the entire screen.Someone had replied beneath the photo, "I bet that's an edited photo."A string of agreements followed.Hank st
