Chapter 4

Author: Joyride
Gideon's POV

After I got home, I began going through all of my belongings. There were a ton of matching items, like clothes, scarves, tumblers, and toothbrushes.

Over the past seven years, Mallory had accompanied me to pick out every single one of them.

"That way, you won't ever have to worry about another man stealing me away from you."

There was so much stuff that it took me an entire day to sort through everything. By the time I finished, I'd filled a huge box.

With an impassive expression, I dumped it all into the trash can outside. I no longer cared if anyone stole her away now.

Suddenly, a book slipped out of the pile. It must have gotten mixed in by accident. I shook it, and a slightly yellowed letter fell out.

For some reason, my heart clenched tightly.

It was a love letter. Mallory's signature was at the bottom.

It was a love letter she'd written to Hank, every word filled with her earnest love.

"One day, I'll shine so brightly that you can no longer ignore me. I'll make you willingly become my man."

She'd never said any of this to me.

Mallory had known Hank longer than she'd known me. She'd fallen for him long before she'd ever fallen for me.

My head hurt so badly it felt like it was about to explode.

Every time Hank and his friends bullied me, Mallory stepped in front of me. At the time, I thought she was protecting me. Now, I knew she'd only wanted an excuse to stare at Hank.

When Hank threw my homework into the trash, she'd picked it up and returned it to me. For the longest time, I'd been so touched by that gesture.

But now, as I recalled how quickly she'd rushed over then, I wondered if she'd been running toward Hank instead of me.

I sat on the couch, clutching the love letter so tightly that my fingers hurt. I realized that I'd merely been a convenient substitute Mallory had settled for during all those years when she couldn't have Hank.

But now, their positions had been reversed. He needed her, and she could finally stand openly by his side.

As for me, I was the person she wanted nothing more than to keep her distance from, all in the name of avoiding unnecessary gossip and trouble.

Suddenly, a new message popped up in the group chat on my phone. A colleague had posted a photo from a gathering.

Mallory and Hank were sitting extremely close to each other.

"I'm losing my mind over these two. Nothing beats a real couple. From the way Ms. Spencer looks at Hank, I can practically see the sparks flying!"

"I heard they went to high school together, too. Not only are they childhood sweethearts, but they're also equally matched in their careers. They're perfect for each other."

"Remember a certain someone who saw Hank's watch this morning and threw his own ring away? What a joke. Men really do look pathetic when they're jealous."

"Give it a rest. The freeloader's just having a meltdown. Everyone knows Ms. Spencer has been avoiding him ever since he joined the company, but he keeps throwing himself at her anyway. Now that the real deal is here, let's see how much trouble he can keep trying to cause from now on."

I stared at the screen, a chill spreading through my entire body. I felt a desire to destroy something.

On the table sat a photo Mallory and I had taken when we'd first gotten together. I snapped a picture of it and sent it to the group chat.

The lively conversation died out at once, and that made me feel a little better.

Suddenly, my phone rang. Simon's panicked voice rang out, "Gideon! What did you do to piss Hank off? He's filed a report against you, accusing you of leaking the bidding proposal."

She showed up in a white dress and was holding an expensive tuxedo.Looking me in the eye, she asked, "Gideon, will you marry me? Starting today, I promise I'll introduce you to everyone. Hank has also been sentenced to seven years in prison. He'll never appear in front of you again."I know I've done a lot of things to hurt you over the years. You've always stayed by my side without fail. I thought I'd simply grown accustomed to your presence, but that wasn't it. It was only after you were gone that I gradually realized I'd fallen in love with you long ago, without even realizing it."Her expression was careful and tentative as she continued, "Will you give me another chance, Gideon? Let me be by your side again, okay?"When I didn't respond, she spoke again, "From now on, I'll tell everyone that you're my boyfriend, the man I love most!""What makes you think you deserve that?" I asked evenly.Mallory

Gideon's POVThe next morning, I was woken by the commotion outside. I opened the door and stepped out, only to find a crowd of people gathered in front of the inn.Somehow, word had gotten around that my inn was full of attractive people, so the news attracted quite a few guests. I was so busy I barely had time to stop and catch my breath, let alone run into Mallory or her friends. When I came back in from the backyard, Mallory ambushed me at the door."Don't you think you're acting like one of those toxic exes who only regrets what she's lost when it's too late and desperately tries to win her ex back? Sadly for you, I'm not the soft-hearted type. I'm not interested in playing these games with you, either," I said.Mallory stared at me with a piercing gaze, as if trying to find some hint of something else in my expression."We're fully booked for tonight. You'll need to find somewhere else to stay.""I can wait for a room to open up.""It's too much trouble. There's no need f

Gideon's POVWhen I answered the phone, the person on the other end remained silent for a long time. I was just about to drop the call when a strained voice finally came through the speaker."Gideon… I messed up. I love you. I'll get someone to fix your grandma's audio recorder. Please come back. Please?"Mallory's words came out in a jumbled mess. I couldn't be bothered to listen to her."Mallory, I'm never going to agree to a private settlement with Hank.""I'm—"I ended the call without letting her finish what she had to say. I also blocked the number for good measure.…Mallory's friends noticed that the call had been cut off, and the bustle subsided a little. Her face was terrifyingly pale. She tossed her phone down irritably, looking rather dejected. One of her more foolhardy friends piped up, "Was that Gideon? I heard he went back to his hometown and started an inn after quitting his job with you. Apparently, a lot of the guests go there just because the owner is handso

Gideon's POVHank lowered his head, the corners of his mouth curling slightly."Mr. Lyle." Mallory finally looked at me, her voice perfectly even. "Sit down for now. We'll investigate this matter.""How do you intend to do that?""In accordance with company policy and procedures.""My memory card was broken in half. Which of the company's procedures fixes it for me?" I questioned.Mallory glanced at the broken memory card, a flicker of guilt passing through her eyes. But she quickly looked away."After working with you for so many years, Mr. Lyle, I'm sure you're the kind of person who would leak company secrets. As for the audio recorder, the company will compensate you for it."She knew perfectly well that nothing could replace what I'd lost, yet she still said that to me.Hank tugged on her sleeve. "Mallory, did I cause trouble for you?"His voice trembled slightly, as if he'd suffered some kind of terrible grievance.Mallory looked at him before reaching out to pat his s

A car honked downstairs, its sharp blare cutting through the air.The moment I opened the door to the conference room, every pair of eyes inside locked onto me.Hank sat to Mallory's left, his body turned slightly to the side. His eyes were faintly red, and he had a wounded expression, as though he were desperately trying to hold back his emotions. My audio recorder lay on the table. A crack ran through its silver casing, snaking from top to bottom like a hideous scar. Beside it, the group chat was open on the laptop in front of Kurt Andrews, the department director. The photo I'd posted had been enlarged to fill the entire screen.Someone had replied beneath the photo, "I bet that's an edited photo."A string of agreements followed.Hank st
