Chapter 11

Author: Shirley
In the Steele family cemetery, a new headstone was erected. Right next to our parents.

Not many people came to the funeral.

Uncle Zac, leaning on his cane, stood before my newly filled grave, tears rolling down his cheeks.

But I only had eyes for Farrow.

Farrow knelt before the headstone, his knees sinking into the damp earth.

He was wearing the black trench coat I had given him for my eighteenth birthday, looking like an empty shell, drained of all life.

He personally placed my urn in its niche, right between Mom and Dad.

"Father, Mother," he said, his voice as hoarse as if he had swallowed sand.

"I lost Grace."

"I was blind, blinded by cheap hatred, and I mistook an enemy for family."

"Don't be in a hurry to judge me. My punishment is already waiting."

His fingers traced the smiling photo on my headstone, his voice as soft as a sigh.

"Grace, my Principessa."

"Is it cold down there? Have you seen Mom and Dad? You should be telling them all the bad things I did."

"You won't have to wai

A bucket of ice-cold, filthy water splashed over his head.Farrow choked awake, coughing violently, the movement jarring the wound on the back of his head and making him wince in pain.He opened his eyes and found himself bound tightly to a rusty iron chair.Dim lights, and on the walls, the same shocking, mottled bloodstains.Marco was toying with a hunting knife that seemed blindingly sharp in the dim light. He ran the blade along Farrow's jawline."So, Don, you want to know what your Principessa looked like at the end?""Right here." Marco pointed the tip of his knife at the corrosion-scarred concrete floor. "Right where you're sitting.""The acid melted her skin, little by little, but I didn't let her die right away.""I have to admit, that Grace girl had a backbone of steel. Tougher than most of the men in your family."Farrow clenched his jaw, the veins on his temples throbbing. But the ropes bit into his flesh, holding him immobile.Marco leaned close to his ear. "Oh, and by the

The estate was unnervingly quiet. The entire mansion was dark and silent.Farrow sat in the car, letting the engine idle.Normally, Betty would have run out to greet him the moment she heard the engine. But now, there was only the rhythmic sweep of the windshield wipers and the sound of the rain.Farrow let out a cold laugh, drew his gun, and chambered a round. He turned to Zac. "Don't follow too close, Zac. I want to see what kind of show she's putting on."Then he pushed the car door open and walked toward the main entrance alone.I floated ahead of him, staring at the half-open door, breaking into a cold sweat despite being dead."Farrow! Don't go in! Please, turn back!""It's a death trap! Betty isn't in there, only executioners!"I spread my arms, a futile gesture to block his path. But he passed right through me, feeling only a bone-chilling gust of night wind.Farrow pushed the door open. The hall was filled with the stale, cheap smell of a cigar brand Farrow never smoked. He di

Farrow stood at the morgue's entrance and lit a cigarette. He needed the nicotine to stay sane.In truth, the clues had been there all along.Like two years ago, when Betty ran to his study in a soaking wet silk nightgown, crying."Brother, it's one thing for Grace not to get me a glass of water... but she threw the whole pitcher of ice water on me and said I wasn't worthy of drinking the Steele family's water."Back then, Farrow hadn't given me a chance to explain. In front of all the servants, he stood by as Betty shoved me onto the cold marble floor."Grace, this is your last warning. If you dare bully Betty again, I'll have you thrown out of this house."No matter how I cried, how I swore it was Betty who had poured the water on herself, he only saw excuses and dismissed me as a vicious sister. After that, Betty took over my room, wore my couture gowns, and even stole my place at family dinners. To survive in that house, to catch even a fleeting glimpse of my brother, I humbled mys

The air went still. That thin sheet of paper, the DNA report, was like a guillotine, severing Farrow's last shred of hope."No... impossible."Farrow stumbled back, knocking over a medical tray behind him.The crash of metal instruments on the concrete floor was terrifyingly loud in the cavernous plant."How could Grace be dead? She's so afraid of pain, she cries when she gets a shot... She wouldn't dare to die!"The next second, he bolted toward the morgue like a madman.A few bodyguards tried to stop him, but he kicked them away with a wild look in his eyes."Get out of my way! All of you, get out!"He threw himself at the cold slab, his hands trembling as he tore at the black body bag. This time, he didn't wear gloves. He didn't recoil from the sickening stench of rot.He violently ripped the zipper open, until the charred corpse was fully exposed to the air.Farrow's hand, shaking, reached out and gently took her clenched left hand. His fingertips brushed over the scar on the palm,

Once the floodgates of memory opened, they swept over me like a torrent, carrying the stench of blood.During the so-called "peace talks," my father, the Don of the Steele family, had taken my mother to a sit-down in neutral territory to end a decade-long war with a rival family. His birthday was approaching, and I had carelessly mentioned his travel plans to a friend on the phone, wanting to discuss a surprise party for him.The armored car carrying my parents erupted in a fireball on 5th Avenue. The moment the ignition turned, the car exploded, shattering every window on the block. When Farrow arrived, all he saw was a field of wreckage and me, my hands a bloody, mangled mess. After that, my memory was just the stench of burning flesh and my mother's last look through the car window, her eyes full of an unspoken worry. The rain was heavy on the day of the funeral. Farrow wore a black mourning suit, his eyes as cold as the grave. He had learned what happened. He grabbed me by the thro
