Chapter 2

Author: A.Nostos
Matteo picked Bianca up and headed for the doors. As he passed me, he stopped. A rare look of hesitation crossed his usually composed face.

"I'm sorry, Elena. Bianca's old injury is acting up. I need to get her to a doctor."

Bianca wrapped her arms around Matteo's neck and nestled against his chest.

"No, Don," she said, her voice hoarse. "You should stay and host. They need you here."

Matteo frowned and looked down at her. His deep voice had gone unusually soft. "Don't be silly. Someone else can host. You matter more."

He turned his head just long enough to tell a waiter to help me upstairs, then strode off with her in his arms, leaving a roomful of guests trading looks.

My stomach finally gave in, and I started dry heaving. The scent of the flowers only made the nausea worse, and I had to lean on the waiter just to stay on my feet.

"So that's Anthony Caruso's daughter? He was the family advisor back then. Such a shame he died in that ambush. I heard the Don's been looking out for her ever since, but engaged? Who saw that coming?"

"Seems like the Don cares more about Ms. Russo, doesn't it? Honestly, Ms. Russo looks more like the next Donna."

A crowd had gathered by the doorway, and I could hear them whispering. It broke my heart.

Matteo's footsteps had already faded away. Fighting back tears, I apologized to the guests, said good night, and let the waiter help me out.

Bianca mattered more than the ball, and the ball mattered more than me.

Maybe my high-and-mighty fiancé had never truly cared about me at all.

Maybe he'd only felt sorry for me because I'd lost my father?

I couldn't stop shaking, and I couldn't think straight.

I stayed curled up in my bedroom for a long time. Once I was away from the scent of the tuberoses, I slowly started feeling better.

I got up and swallowed some painkillers. Just then, my phone screen lit up.

Of all people, the text was from Enzo Greco, an old friend of my father's.

"Elena, I hope you're doing well. There's something I've kept to myself for a long time. It has to do with the ambush that killed your father. If you're willing, come to Boston, and we can talk in person."

My hand trembled, and my breathing quickened.

Uncle Enzo had been my father's driver. He'd never been a sworn member of the family, but he'd watched me grow up.

After we buried my father, he suddenly quit and moved to Boston, and I hadn't heard from him since.

Over the years, I'd gone through all my father's records—the family foundation's files, the rosters, his private letters. I'd searched them again and again and never found a thing.

I'd almost come to accept that my father had simply been hit by a stray bullet.

Having Matteo there had given me the courage to face life again.

Then another text from Uncle Enzo came through. "Don't tell the Don you're coming to see me. He won't let you come."

A few seconds later, as if he'd thought better of it, he unsent it.

But my heart was already pounding like a war drum.

Memories came flooding back, and it suddenly hit me. Matteo hadn't started showing me any "love" until after my father died.

Before that, we'd barely crossed paths, even within the family.

What was Matteo hiding from me? How much of what he felt for me was real?

I looked down at the engagement ring on my finger, then back at the message.

"Boston..." I whispered.

Was this... God pointing me in a new direction?

Without thinking, I clutched at my clothes."How did you find me?"Matteo pulled something up on his phone and set it down in front of me."With your name online like that, you weren't exactly hard to find."On the screen was the staff list from the bookstore's catalog."I want to talk to you."His eyes were dark and serious. We sat at one of the tables in the store, and he slid a large envelope across to me.I opened it. Inside was his signed account of what had happened, with every detail spelled out. He'd already shared it with the whole family."Elena, I told the whole family what really happened back then... I also told them the engagement is over. No one is going to bother you again."I didn't say anything. I put the papers back in the envelope, planning to take them home and show Uncle Enzo.At last, the truth about my father was no longer a secret."Thank you for bringing me this."Something shifted in Matteo's eyes, and he leaned forward without seeming to realize it."Elena,

Before we left Boston, Uncle Enzo and I carefully took the photo down from the wall. He'd lived there for years, but he didn't have much to pack. Everything fit into two old leather suitcases."Are you really moving with me, Uncle Enzo?" I hated the thought of putting him through all that trouble.Uncle Enzo tucked the photo into a suitcase and smiled. "It's about time I moved anyway. I'll find a place on a lower floor, so I don't have to climb all these stairs every day."Uncle Enzo had always looked out for me, even when I was a kid. My eyes burned with tears, and I didn't try to talk him out of it again. We moved to Providence together and used the money we'd saved over the years to rent a two-story apartment with a terrace.Enzo took the downstairs, and I took the upstairs. With south-facing windows and an open view, the whole place was filled with sunlight. The first few days after we moved in, I kept listening for cars pulling up outside the window.I'd clutch the curtain until I

ElenaEarly that evening, there was a knock at the apartment door.Matteo stood outside in his black coat, still carrying the chill from outdoors. His tall frame nearly blocked the hallway light. When he saw me, his face lit up for a split second. "Elena, you're all right. I'm so glad—""Come in," I said flatly, cutting him off.The apartment was tiny. Matteo signaled for his guards to wait by the door. They crowded the already narrow hallway.Uncle Enzo greeted him awkwardly, helped him out of his coat, and hung it on the back of the door.Matteo carried himself with a Don's authority, as always. Uncle Enzo instinctively hung back, too intimidated to sit down.I pulled out a chair, helped Uncle Enzo into it, and glared at Matteo. "Some people sure like to throw their weight around. This isn't your estate, and Uncle Enzo isn't your servant."Matteo paused as he reached for the back of the chair. Uncharacteristically, he avoided my gaze and quietly thanked Uncle Enzo.I sat down across

MatteoAfter the call ended, Elena texted Matteo an address in Boston. At least it wasn't far.Matteo waved Dario over. "Get the car. We're going to Boston, as fast as we can."A cup of coffee sat on the desk, long since gone cold. He picked it up and drained it in one go.He hadn't slept all night. He rubbed his brow, still shaken by what had happened. His stomach had dropped when they found the broken bracelet on the tracks. He hadn't even dared to ask whether there was any blood nearby. Now that he knew Elena was safe, he should have been able to breathe again. But he couldn't relax. All he could think about was everything that had happened over the past few weeks.Had he really treated her that badly? Badly enough to make her walk away from the family and everything that came with it?Just then, the door opened.Victoria walked in, followed by Bianca, whose eyes were red and swollen."Have you found Elena?" Victoria sat down beside Matteo."She's in Boston. I'm going to see her soo

Call after call lit up the screen. Uncle Enzo hesitated, then asked, "Is it the Don?"I nodded, looking down at the caller ID."Elena... sweetheart, I know this is a lot to take in. But if you really want answers, you should ask the Don himself."Uncle Enzo chose his words carefully, trying to be gentle."Uncle Enzo, I know... I just can't accept it yet. The person I've trusted most these past few years actually had something to do with my father's death."Matteo didn't love me. I knew that. But he knew the truth I'd been searching for all these years. Why didn't he tell me?I took a deep breath and answered.Matteo spoke at once, his voice anxious. "Elena? Thank God you're okay. I couldn't find you anywhere. Do you have any idea how worried I was? Where are you? I'll send someone to pick you up.""Looking for me? Why would you look for me?" I said flatly. "Isn't Bianca the one you really care about?"He was quiet for a few seconds, as if he hadn't expected me to say that. When he spok

As the train pulled out of New York, Matteo called.I let the phone ring until the screen went dark, leaving only my calm reflection behind.I didn't answer.A few minutes later, Matteo texted me. "Elena, enough. Stop acting out. You're making the family look bad."I don't care where you are. Come back. Bianca's been crying and blaming herself, and she's still defending you after the way you behaved. You've gone too far, Elena. You've brought shame on this family!"I didn't reply. I just turned my phone face down. The scenery rushed past outside the window. Whatever drama was going on back in New York, I didn't care anymore.Whoever he favored, however much he ignored me, none of it mattered now.The train pulled in at the first gray light of dawn. Uncle Enzo was waiting for me on the platform. He was a lot thinner than I remembered, and his hair had gone almost completely white. But when he reached for my suitcase, he smiled at me as warmly as he always had. "Elena, why did you travel
