Chapter 3

Author: A.Nostos
I'd taken the painkillers on an empty stomach. Less than ten minutes later, my stomach was churning again.

I ran into the bathroom and threw up, clinging to the sink and shaking all over.

A car took me to the private hospital the family always used. When I got there, a line of Rinaldi family cars was parked outside.

It wasn't until someone helped me into the lobby that I found out Bianca was there, too.

Matteo had locked down the private ward on the top floor and brought in the best orthopedic specialists to examine her. Meanwhile, the driver had simply dropped me off at the ER downstairs.

The doctor did a neurological exam, confirmed nothing more serious was wrong, and sent me with a nurse to get an IV.

Night had already fallen. In the window, my reflection looked haggard and pale.

The nurse taped the needle down with practiced ease.

"The pills you just took can make you very drowsy. Someone needs to stay with you while you're on this IV. Call your family. It's too dangerous to be alone."

"Matteo, my fiancé, is up in your private ward on the top floor."

I replied weakly, my voice barely above a whisper.

"Oh my God... You mean the mafia—"

The nurse clapped a hand over her mouth, but I still caught the shock that flashed across her face.

Right. Anyone would find this strange.

The fiancée of the Rinaldi family's Don, in a state like this, dropped off at the hospital without so much as a bodyguard.

Meanwhile, the Don himself was right there in the building, yet he still hadn't shown his face.

The nurse hurried off, but when she returned, only Dario Conti, the head of security, came with her.

"Ms. Caruso, the Don knows you're here," Dario said respectfully. "He told me to stay with you. If you need anything at all, just say the word."

I looked at him and said nothing for a moment.

"Why isn't the Don coming?"

"Ms. Russo is having some tests done. The Don says he can't get away."

He was willing to abandon a room full of guests for Bianca. Of course he could leave me behind for her too.

He knew perfectly well I was in the hospital, too, but all he'd done was send one of his men. He wouldn't even come see me.

I called Matteo. It rang for a long time.

"Elena? Didn't I already send Dario to stay with you?"

He was keeping his voice down, and I could faintly hear doctors talking in the background.

"Matteo, I'm right downstairs in the ER. Can't you even come see me for a minute?"

My voice was strangely calm. Even I hadn't expected that.

"I know. That's why I have Dario with you. He'll take care of everything."

He paused, and his low voice softened. "Bianca needs me. I can't get away. Elena, try to understand, okay?

"I've already asked the best neurologist in the hospital to see you. The bill and your security will be taken care of, too."

He was as thorough as ever, every detail planned out in advance.

Except for coming to see me.

I gripped the phone tighter. When I spoke, I sounded helpless. "Matteo, I want you to come down and see me."

The line went quiet.

A few seconds later, Bianca's hoarse voice drifted over the line. "Go be with Elena. I've got the doctors and the guys here."

Matteo didn't answer her. He just lowered his voice and spoke to me. "Once Bianca's tests are done, I'll come see you."

He hung up.

I closed my eyes, but I still couldn't stop the disappointment from welling up.

The first winter after Matteo and I got together, I'd ended up in this same hospital with a migraine.

Back then, he never left my side. When he saw I was hurting, he'd pull me into his arms and comfort me in a low voice. He never relaxed until I was feeling better.

I thought I'd finally found someone I could lean on.

But reality proved me painfully wrong.

The medication kicked in, and I slowly drifted off.

I didn't know how long I'd been asleep when I woke to footsteps marching in unison down the hall.

It was Matteo, carrying Bianca and striding toward the observation room.

Bianca was wrapped in his suit jacket, her cheek resting on his broad shoulder.

I could only watch as Matteo and a whole line of his men strode right past the observation room.

He didn't see me.

He hadn't come to see me. He just happened to be passing by.

"Matteo!"

Maybe I just couldn't let it end like this. With the last of my strength, I cried out.

He stopped short and turned hesitantly. Our eyes met.

Guilt and exhaustion were written all over his stern face.

Matteo didn't come into the observation room.

"Elena? God, I'm so sorry.

"I can't stay. I need to take Bianca home so she can rest."

He spoke from a few yards away, as if he'd had to make a difficult choice. "Dario will stay with you. I'll come see you in the morning."

Then he left with Bianca in his arms, and he didn't look back.

The guards fell in behind them, and soon they had all disappeared through the doors.

Dario was still standing by my bed, dutifully keeping watch.

Matteo had made all the proper arrangements for me. He'd done his duty as my fiancé.

But he gave Bianca the companionship he should have given the woman he loved.

The rest of the night was miserable. The medication left me groggy, but stomach cramps kept jolting me awake.

In fragments of dreams, I relived my whole relationship with Matteo.

But Bianca was everywhere in them.

Morning light finally spilled into the dreary observation room.

Dario stepped out to take a call. When he returned, he looked apologetic. "Ms. Caruso, the Don says there's a problem with the weapons in the southern territory. He won't be able to make it."

I nodded without a word, my fingers absently turning my expensive engagement ring.

While Dario was out on his call, I'd asked a doctor about Bianca's results from the night before. She was perfectly fine—no broken bones, not even a muscle strain.

I opened Uncle Enzo's message and wrote back, asking exactly where in Boston he wanted to meet.

If there was no place for me here, then leaving was for the best.

Without thinking, I clutched at my clothes."How did you find me?"Matteo pulled something up on his phone and set it down in front of me."With your name online like that, you weren't exactly hard to find."On the screen was the staff list from the bookstore's catalog."I want to talk to you."His eyes were dark and serious. We sat at one of the tables in the store, and he slid a large envelope across to me.I opened it. Inside was his signed account of what had happened, with every detail spelled out. He'd already shared it with the whole family."Elena, I told the whole family what really happened back then... I also told them the engagement is over. No one is going to bother you again."I didn't say anything. I put the papers back in the envelope, planning to take them home and show Uncle Enzo.At last, the truth about my father was no longer a secret."Thank you for bringing me this."Something shifted in Matteo's eyes, and he leaned forward without seeming to realize it."Elena,

Before we left Boston, Uncle Enzo and I carefully took the photo down from the wall. He'd lived there for years, but he didn't have much to pack. Everything fit into two old leather suitcases."Are you really moving with me, Uncle Enzo?" I hated the thought of putting him through all that trouble.Uncle Enzo tucked the photo into a suitcase and smiled. "It's about time I moved anyway. I'll find a place on a lower floor, so I don't have to climb all these stairs every day."Uncle Enzo had always looked out for me, even when I was a kid. My eyes burned with tears, and I didn't try to talk him out of it again. We moved to Providence together and used the money we'd saved over the years to rent a two-story apartment with a terrace.Enzo took the downstairs, and I took the upstairs. With south-facing windows and an open view, the whole place was filled with sunlight. The first few days after we moved in, I kept listening for cars pulling up outside the window.I'd clutch the curtain until I

ElenaEarly that evening, there was a knock at the apartment door.Matteo stood outside in his black coat, still carrying the chill from outdoors. His tall frame nearly blocked the hallway light. When he saw me, his face lit up for a split second. "Elena, you're all right. I'm so glad—""Come in," I said flatly, cutting him off.The apartment was tiny. Matteo signaled for his guards to wait by the door. They crowded the already narrow hallway.Uncle Enzo greeted him awkwardly, helped him out of his coat, and hung it on the back of the door.Matteo carried himself with a Don's authority, as always. Uncle Enzo instinctively hung back, too intimidated to sit down.I pulled out a chair, helped Uncle Enzo into it, and glared at Matteo. "Some people sure like to throw their weight around. This isn't your estate, and Uncle Enzo isn't your servant."Matteo paused as he reached for the back of the chair. Uncharacteristically, he avoided my gaze and quietly thanked Uncle Enzo.I sat down across

MatteoAfter the call ended, Elena texted Matteo an address in Boston. At least it wasn't far.Matteo waved Dario over. "Get the car. We're going to Boston, as fast as we can."A cup of coffee sat on the desk, long since gone cold. He picked it up and drained it in one go.He hadn't slept all night. He rubbed his brow, still shaken by what had happened. His stomach had dropped when they found the broken bracelet on the tracks. He hadn't even dared to ask whether there was any blood nearby. Now that he knew Elena was safe, he should have been able to breathe again. But he couldn't relax. All he could think about was everything that had happened over the past few weeks.Had he really treated her that badly? Badly enough to make her walk away from the family and everything that came with it?Just then, the door opened.Victoria walked in, followed by Bianca, whose eyes were red and swollen."Have you found Elena?" Victoria sat down beside Matteo."She's in Boston. I'm going to see her soo

Call after call lit up the screen. Uncle Enzo hesitated, then asked, "Is it the Don?"I nodded, looking down at the caller ID."Elena... sweetheart, I know this is a lot to take in. But if you really want answers, you should ask the Don himself."Uncle Enzo chose his words carefully, trying to be gentle."Uncle Enzo, I know... I just can't accept it yet. The person I've trusted most these past few years actually had something to do with my father's death."Matteo didn't love me. I knew that. But he knew the truth I'd been searching for all these years. Why didn't he tell me?I took a deep breath and answered.Matteo spoke at once, his voice anxious. "Elena? Thank God you're okay. I couldn't find you anywhere. Do you have any idea how worried I was? Where are you? I'll send someone to pick you up.""Looking for me? Why would you look for me?" I said flatly. "Isn't Bianca the one you really care about?"He was quiet for a few seconds, as if he hadn't expected me to say that. When he spok

As the train pulled out of New York, Matteo called.I let the phone ring until the screen went dark, leaving only my calm reflection behind.I didn't answer.A few minutes later, Matteo texted me. "Elena, enough. Stop acting out. You're making the family look bad."I don't care where you are. Come back. Bianca's been crying and blaming herself, and she's still defending you after the way you behaved. You've gone too far, Elena. You've brought shame on this family!"I didn't reply. I just turned my phone face down. The scenery rushed past outside the window. Whatever drama was going on back in New York, I didn't care anymore.Whoever he favored, however much he ignored me, none of it mattered now.The train pulled in at the first gray light of dawn. Uncle Enzo was waiting for me on the platform. He was a lot thinner than I remembered, and his hair had gone almost completely white. But when he reached for my suitcase, he smiled at me as warmly as he always had. "Elena, why did you travel
