Chapter 6

Author: A.Nostos
On a Sunday two weeks later, I handed my luggage to the driver and headed to the estate for Victoria's birthday dinner.

No one in the Rinaldi family knew it yet, but after tonight, I'd be gone from New York.

The party was held in the main hall of the estate. Only close family, a few important capos, and longtime business partners had been invited.

When I walked in, Victoria was holding Bianca's hand, deep in conversation with her.

"I heard you were in the hospital not long ago. Why didn't you rest a few more days?"

"I'm much better now." Bianca smiled as she handed her the gift. "You didn't think I'd miss your birthday, did you?"

Victoria's youthful face lit up with a smile, and she had Bianca seated right beside her.

Victoria didn't so much as glance my way until someone greeted me. Even then, she gave me only a cool glance.

"Elena, you're here. Have a seat."

Matteo sat at the head of the table and motioned for me to sit next to him.

Halfway through dinner, Victoria had the butler bring out a black velvet box.

When the lid opened, there it was: the Saint Agatha brooch. Black enamel framed a ruby at its center, the stone gleaming under the lights.

The whole hall went quiet at once, and every eye was fixed on the brooch.

The Rinaldi family had passed it down for nearly 100 years, and only the Donna could wear it.

Victoria had once told me that on the day Matteo and I got married, she would pin it on my wedding dress herself.

But tonight, she turned and beckoned to Bianca instead.

"Lean in."

Bianca hesitated, then leaned forward.

Victoria took out the brooch and pinned it to the front of Bianca's dress.

My hands jerked, scraping my knife and fork across my plate with a harsh screech.

Victoria and Matteo both shot me disapproving looks, making it clear they thought I'd behaved improperly.

Victoria, the matriarch the whole family looked up to, gave me a look of disappointment before turning back to Bianca with a warm smile.

"You've been hosting our important guests for Matteo all this time, and we've all seen how hard you work... Tonight I'm lending you this brooch. Wear it in my place for one evening. Think of it as hosting on my behalf."

A few elders exchanged glances, then looked at me. No one said a word.

I looked at Matteo. He was still sitting at the head of the table, solid as a rock and just as unmoved.

I refused to let this humiliation be the last thing I carried with me.

"Take it off." My voice was ice.

Victoria's smile faded at once.

"It's my birthday. I have every right to let Bianca wear it for one night."

"No, you don't. Not even on your birthday," I shot back.

"Elena." Matteo finally spoke, a warning in his voice. "Don't ruin my mother's birthday over a brooch."

I looked at him like he was a stranger.

"You know exactly what that brooch means. Don't play dumb."

Matteo's grip tightened on his glass until the veins stood out on the back of his hand, and his face darkened.

"Bianca has done so much for this family, and for me. My mother just wants to thank her publicly. There's no need to read so much into it."

"So you're fine with her wearing it, too?" I said.

"I just want you to know when to stop, Elena. Why can't you be as gracious as Bianca?"

Bianca's eyes reddened, and she reached up to unpin the brooch.

"Forget it. This really isn't mine to have. Give it back to Elena. She's your fiancée. I don't want her to get the wrong idea."

She was so worked up that she knocked over a wine glass at the edge of the table. Glass shards and wine sprayed everywhere.

Matteo was on his feet almost instantly, pulling her into his arms.

"Are you hurt?"

Bianca shook her head, but the tears kept falling.

"I'm fine. This is all my fault. Give it back to Elena."

Matteo looked at me, and his eyes had gone cold and hard.

"Enough, Elena! Do you really have to make a scene at my mother's birthday dinner?

"Bianca is only standing in for my mother as host tonight. Don't bring your personal feelings into a family occasion."

The hall was so quiet that all I could hear was people breathing.

I watched him stand guard over Bianca, looking at me as if I were the threat. Suddenly, all the misery I'd been carrying lifted. Even my body relaxed.

Calmly, I slid off my engagement ring and set it on the white tablecloth.

Matteo stared at the ring, his eyes so dark it was frightening.

The tension in the hall was so thick, it felt hard to breathe.

"Happy birthday, Victoria."

I looked at the brooch pinned to Bianca's dress and calmly added, "There's no need to give it back to me."

Without a moment's hesitation, I walked out of the main hall, leaving the shock and the whispers behind me.

Matteo didn't come after me.

In the small hours of the morning, Penn Station was still lit up bright as day.

Before I went down to the platform, I sent Matteo one last message.

"The engagement is over. The brooch can go to someone better suited to wear it. We're done."

The message was marked as read almost immediately, but no reply came.

The train to Boston pulled in, and I dragged my suitcase on board.

Just before the doors closed, I took off the tracking bracelet the Rinaldi family had given me and tossed it onto the tracks.

Without thinking, I clutched at my clothes."How did you find me?"Matteo pulled something up on his phone and set it down in front of me."With your name online like that, you weren't exactly hard to find."On the screen was the staff list from the bookstore's catalog."I want to talk to you."His eyes were dark and serious. We sat at one of the tables in the store, and he slid a large envelope across to me.I opened it. Inside was his signed account of what had happened, with every detail spelled out. He'd already shared it with the whole family."Elena, I told the whole family what really happened back then... I also told them the engagement is over. No one is going to bother you again."I didn't say anything. I put the papers back in the envelope, planning to take them home and show Uncle Enzo.At last, the truth about my father was no longer a secret."Thank you for bringing me this."Something shifted in Matteo's eyes, and he leaned forward without seeming to realize it."Elena,

Before we left Boston, Uncle Enzo and I carefully took the photo down from the wall. He'd lived there for years, but he didn't have much to pack. Everything fit into two old leather suitcases."Are you really moving with me, Uncle Enzo?" I hated the thought of putting him through all that trouble.Uncle Enzo tucked the photo into a suitcase and smiled. "It's about time I moved anyway. I'll find a place on a lower floor, so I don't have to climb all these stairs every day."Uncle Enzo had always looked out for me, even when I was a kid. My eyes burned with tears, and I didn't try to talk him out of it again. We moved to Providence together and used the money we'd saved over the years to rent a two-story apartment with a terrace.Enzo took the downstairs, and I took the upstairs. With south-facing windows and an open view, the whole place was filled with sunlight. The first few days after we moved in, I kept listening for cars pulling up outside the window.I'd clutch the curtain until I

ElenaEarly that evening, there was a knock at the apartment door.Matteo stood outside in his black coat, still carrying the chill from outdoors. His tall frame nearly blocked the hallway light. When he saw me, his face lit up for a split second. "Elena, you're all right. I'm so glad—""Come in," I said flatly, cutting him off.The apartment was tiny. Matteo signaled for his guards to wait by the door. They crowded the already narrow hallway.Uncle Enzo greeted him awkwardly, helped him out of his coat, and hung it on the back of the door.Matteo carried himself with a Don's authority, as always. Uncle Enzo instinctively hung back, too intimidated to sit down.I pulled out a chair, helped Uncle Enzo into it, and glared at Matteo. "Some people sure like to throw their weight around. This isn't your estate, and Uncle Enzo isn't your servant."Matteo paused as he reached for the back of the chair. Uncharacteristically, he avoided my gaze and quietly thanked Uncle Enzo.I sat down across

MatteoAfter the call ended, Elena texted Matteo an address in Boston. At least it wasn't far.Matteo waved Dario over. "Get the car. We're going to Boston, as fast as we can."A cup of coffee sat on the desk, long since gone cold. He picked it up and drained it in one go.He hadn't slept all night. He rubbed his brow, still shaken by what had happened. His stomach had dropped when they found the broken bracelet on the tracks. He hadn't even dared to ask whether there was any blood nearby. Now that he knew Elena was safe, he should have been able to breathe again. But he couldn't relax. All he could think about was everything that had happened over the past few weeks.Had he really treated her that badly? Badly enough to make her walk away from the family and everything that came with it?Just then, the door opened.Victoria walked in, followed by Bianca, whose eyes were red and swollen."Have you found Elena?" Victoria sat down beside Matteo."She's in Boston. I'm going to see her soo

Call after call lit up the screen. Uncle Enzo hesitated, then asked, "Is it the Don?"I nodded, looking down at the caller ID."Elena... sweetheart, I know this is a lot to take in. But if you really want answers, you should ask the Don himself."Uncle Enzo chose his words carefully, trying to be gentle."Uncle Enzo, I know... I just can't accept it yet. The person I've trusted most these past few years actually had something to do with my father's death."Matteo didn't love me. I knew that. But he knew the truth I'd been searching for all these years. Why didn't he tell me?I took a deep breath and answered.Matteo spoke at once, his voice anxious. "Elena? Thank God you're okay. I couldn't find you anywhere. Do you have any idea how worried I was? Where are you? I'll send someone to pick you up.""Looking for me? Why would you look for me?" I said flatly. "Isn't Bianca the one you really care about?"He was quiet for a few seconds, as if he hadn't expected me to say that. When he spok

As the train pulled out of New York, Matteo called.I let the phone ring until the screen went dark, leaving only my calm reflection behind.I didn't answer.A few minutes later, Matteo texted me. "Elena, enough. Stop acting out. You're making the family look bad."I don't care where you are. Come back. Bianca's been crying and blaming herself, and she's still defending you after the way you behaved. You've gone too far, Elena. You've brought shame on this family!"I didn't reply. I just turned my phone face down. The scenery rushed past outside the window. Whatever drama was going on back in New York, I didn't care anymore.Whoever he favored, however much he ignored me, none of it mattered now.The train pulled in at the first gray light of dawn. Uncle Enzo was waiting for me on the platform. He was a lot thinner than I remembered, and his hair had gone almost completely white. But when he reached for my suitcase, he smiled at me as warmly as he always had. "Elena, why did you travel
