Chapter 5

Author: A.Nostos
After the christening, the family gathered in the church hall for a group photo.

Bianca bustled around helping the photographer, Alex Brooks, get everyone into position. She had just finished when Alex waved her over.

"Could Mr. Rinaldi's fiancée stand on his right, please?"

For a second, the whole room went silent.

Bianca didn't correct him right away. She instinctively looked at Matteo.

A few family members quickly started laughing.

George Lombardi, one of the family's old-timers, waved his cane and teased her. "Even the photographer thinks you two are a couple. Bianca, why don't you just go stand next to Matteo? You'd look so natural together!"

More laughter broke out. Plenty of people were doubled over.

But even more of them were looking me over.

Bianca gave a rueful smile and shook her head.

"George, please. Elena's right here. Keep talking like that, and she won't want to be friends with me anymore."

She came over and hooked her arm through mine affectionately.

"I'm just used to helping Matteo host these things. Without me, I'm not sure these two could even pull off their own engagement party."

"That's true enough," someone chimed in with a laugh. "Matteo doesn't understand women, and Elena's too quiet. What would this family do without Bianca?"

Matteo ignored me so openly that the photographer mistook Bianca for his fiancée—even with me standing right beside him.

My hands curled into fists inside my sleeves, and before I could stop myself, I said, "So what you're saying is, you don't need me?"

The man who'd been joking went white in an instant and shot a frightened look at Matteo.

But lucky for him, offending a "fiancée" like me wasn't going to get him into any trouble.

When Matteo said nothing, Bianca jumped in to smooth things over. "What are you talking about? I'm just helping out. Of course you're the future Donna of the Rinaldi family, Elena!"

I shook off her arm and looked her straight in the eye. "Then where do you want to stand? Between Matteo and me, or on his other side?"

Bianca's smile froze. "That's not it at all," she said quickly. "Elena, how could you think that... Of course I have my own spot."

Matteo frowned. He didn't seem to like this kind of bickering.

He didn't say a word in my defense. Instead, he calmly turned to Alex and gave him his instructions.

"Hurry up and get this done. Don't waste our time."

In the end, Bianca stood on Matteo's right anyway, shoulder to shoulder with him.

As for me, I stayed where I'd been all along, on his other side, half a step away from him.

As the shutter clicked, Matteo angled his body to shield Bianca from the cold air blowing in through the door.

He never forgot to look after her, but he ignored me again and again.

The moment was frozen in that photo, and a few days later, it went up on the hallway wall.

The way Matteo had turned made it look as though he had his arm around Bianca. The two of them were right in the center of the frame.

The distance between Matteo and me looked like a river I could never cross.

Without thinking, I clutched at my clothes."How did you find me?"Matteo pulled something up on his phone and set it down in front of me."With your name online like that, you weren't exactly hard to find."On the screen was the staff list from the bookstore's catalog."I want to talk to you."His eyes were dark and serious. We sat at one of the tables in the store, and he slid a large envelope across to me.I opened it. Inside was his signed account of what had happened, with every detail spelled out. He'd already shared it with the whole family."Elena, I told the whole family what really happened back then... I also told them the engagement is over. No one is going to bother you again."I didn't say anything. I put the papers back in the envelope, planning to take them home and show Uncle Enzo.At last, the truth about my father was no longer a secret."Thank you for bringing me this."Something shifted in Matteo's eyes, and he leaned forward without seeming to realize it."Elena,

Before we left Boston, Uncle Enzo and I carefully took the photo down from the wall. He'd lived there for years, but he didn't have much to pack. Everything fit into two old leather suitcases."Are you really moving with me, Uncle Enzo?" I hated the thought of putting him through all that trouble.Uncle Enzo tucked the photo into a suitcase and smiled. "It's about time I moved anyway. I'll find a place on a lower floor, so I don't have to climb all these stairs every day."Uncle Enzo had always looked out for me, even when I was a kid. My eyes burned with tears, and I didn't try to talk him out of it again. We moved to Providence together and used the money we'd saved over the years to rent a two-story apartment with a terrace.Enzo took the downstairs, and I took the upstairs. With south-facing windows and an open view, the whole place was filled with sunlight. The first few days after we moved in, I kept listening for cars pulling up outside the window.I'd clutch the curtain until I

ElenaEarly that evening, there was a knock at the apartment door.Matteo stood outside in his black coat, still carrying the chill from outdoors. His tall frame nearly blocked the hallway light. When he saw me, his face lit up for a split second. "Elena, you're all right. I'm so glad—""Come in," I said flatly, cutting him off.The apartment was tiny. Matteo signaled for his guards to wait by the door. They crowded the already narrow hallway.Uncle Enzo greeted him awkwardly, helped him out of his coat, and hung it on the back of the door.Matteo carried himself with a Don's authority, as always. Uncle Enzo instinctively hung back, too intimidated to sit down.I pulled out a chair, helped Uncle Enzo into it, and glared at Matteo. "Some people sure like to throw their weight around. This isn't your estate, and Uncle Enzo isn't your servant."Matteo paused as he reached for the back of the chair. Uncharacteristically, he avoided my gaze and quietly thanked Uncle Enzo.I sat down across

MatteoAfter the call ended, Elena texted Matteo an address in Boston. At least it wasn't far.Matteo waved Dario over. "Get the car. We're going to Boston, as fast as we can."A cup of coffee sat on the desk, long since gone cold. He picked it up and drained it in one go.He hadn't slept all night. He rubbed his brow, still shaken by what had happened. His stomach had dropped when they found the broken bracelet on the tracks. He hadn't even dared to ask whether there was any blood nearby. Now that he knew Elena was safe, he should have been able to breathe again. But he couldn't relax. All he could think about was everything that had happened over the past few weeks.Had he really treated her that badly? Badly enough to make her walk away from the family and everything that came with it?Just then, the door opened.Victoria walked in, followed by Bianca, whose eyes were red and swollen."Have you found Elena?" Victoria sat down beside Matteo."She's in Boston. I'm going to see her soo

Call after call lit up the screen. Uncle Enzo hesitated, then asked, "Is it the Don?"I nodded, looking down at the caller ID."Elena... sweetheart, I know this is a lot to take in. But if you really want answers, you should ask the Don himself."Uncle Enzo chose his words carefully, trying to be gentle."Uncle Enzo, I know... I just can't accept it yet. The person I've trusted most these past few years actually had something to do with my father's death."Matteo didn't love me. I knew that. But he knew the truth I'd been searching for all these years. Why didn't he tell me?I took a deep breath and answered.Matteo spoke at once, his voice anxious. "Elena? Thank God you're okay. I couldn't find you anywhere. Do you have any idea how worried I was? Where are you? I'll send someone to pick you up.""Looking for me? Why would you look for me?" I said flatly. "Isn't Bianca the one you really care about?"He was quiet for a few seconds, as if he hadn't expected me to say that. When he spok

As the train pulled out of New York, Matteo called.I let the phone ring until the screen went dark, leaving only my calm reflection behind.I didn't answer.A few minutes later, Matteo texted me. "Elena, enough. Stop acting out. You're making the family look bad."I don't care where you are. Come back. Bianca's been crying and blaming herself, and she's still defending you after the way you behaved. You've gone too far, Elena. You've brought shame on this family!"I didn't reply. I just turned my phone face down. The scenery rushed past outside the window. Whatever drama was going on back in New York, I didn't care anymore.Whoever he favored, however much he ignored me, none of it mattered now.The train pulled in at the first gray light of dawn. Uncle Enzo was waiting for me on the platform. He was a lot thinner than I remembered, and his hair had gone almost completely white. But when he reached for my suitcase, he smiled at me as warmly as he always had. "Elena, why did you travel
