Chapter 1

When Dante returned thirty minutes before the ceremony, my body was still lying beside the half-collapsed cake.

Frosting coated my hair and shoulders, thickest over my left eye.

Tessa leaned against the vanity, touching up her lipstick.

“Dante, your bride has quite a temper. I already apologized, and she still won’t get up.”

Marco, one of the Valdieri family’s capos, nudged my heel with his shoe.

“Isabella, Dante’s here. You’ve made your point.”

I rushed over to stop him, but my hands passed straight through his body.

Dante wasn’t smiling. He crouched beside me and straightened the twisted hem of my gown.

“Didn’t I tell you not to wear these today?”

He muttered the complaint as his fingers deftly unfastened the strap around my ankle.

Then he took out the soft-soled wedding shoes he’d brought that morning.

A month ago, the heels I wore to my dress fitting had rubbed my feet raw. I’d mentioned, in passing, that they hurt.

That same day, he called the designer and had my stilettos replaced with low heels.

I’d laughed at him for making such a fuss.

“Your wedding should make you happy,” he’d said. “You’re not supposed to suffer through it.”

But now I was lying at his feet, dead.

And he had no idea.

He slipped off my heels and eased the softer shoes onto my feet. Then he took off his jacket, draped it over me, and wiped some frosting from my chin.

His fingers paused against my skin.

“Why are you so cold?”

I threw myself in front of him.

Check my pulse, Dante.

Tessa scoffed.

“The AC’s blasting. She’s been lying on the floor for ages. Of course she’s cold.”

Dante frowned again and reached down to help me up.

My body slumped into his arms.

He cradled my head, afraid I might hit the corner of the table.

“Isabella.”

His voice hardened.

“That’s enough.”

With my body resting against his shoulder, I suddenly found it all so absurd.

Once, I would have taken that tenderness as proof that he loved me. Now he was holding my dead body and telling me to stop sulking.

He settled me on the sofa and patiently wiped the frosting from my hand.

The ring on my finger had twisted sideways.

He lowered his head and turned it back into place.

“You chose this ring. You spent three months getting this dress exactly right.”

“There are more than three hundred guests outside.”

“Are you really going to ruin your own wedding over one joke from Tessa?”

I stared at him. Tessa had killed me, and somehow, I was the one ruining the wedding.

There were so many little ways he made me feel loved. The same man whose word carried so much weight in the family would cook me breakfast and warm my cold feet between his hands.

But whenever Tessa was involved, I was always the one expected to be understanding.

When I first met her five years ago, she slipped an arm around Dante’s neck and called him “my Don-Don.”

Dante spent the whole evening explaining.

“We grew up together. She’s like a little sister to me. She’s always been this affectionate with everyone, even our capos.”

Later, Tessa drank from his cup, wore his jackets, and called him at two in the morning to pick her up from club.

I’d argued with him more times than I could count.

Every time, he held me and said:

“Isabella, let it go. You know how she is.”

I gave in once.

Then again.

Until today, when I had nothing left to give.

Tessa suddenly leaned closer.

“What’s that under Isabella’s eye?”

She reached out to wipe it away.

Dante blocked her hand.

“Don’t touch her.”

Tessa froze.

He took a wet wipe, frowning.

“Her skin’s sensitive. You’re too rough.”

For a moment, I thought he was finally going to notice the wound beneath the frosting.

But he only wiped a little frosting from my cheek.

The wipe came away stained dark red.

Tessa glanced at it.

“Raspberry filling, probably. That layer was red.”

Outside, the wedding coordinator called through the door.

“Mr. Valdieri, twenty minutes until the ceremony. We need you outside to greet the guests.”

He stood and pulled his jacket more securely around my shoulders.

“I’ll give you ten minutes. Come out when you’ve calmed down. I’ll be waiting by the door.”

The door closed.

Tessa’s smile faded.

She looked down at me and clicked her tongue.

“Even after all this, he still worries about you getting cold.”

Then she picked up my phone and smiled.

“You want to make a scene? Let’s make it bigger.”

My parents moved to the coast while Dante was still in prison.Mom had wanted to live near the water for years. There had always been a reason to wait: work, the mortgage, a daughter who might need them nearby. After Dad retired, they rented a small house with a balcony overlooking the beach. For the first few months, Mom kept saying they could go back whenever they wanted. Then she bought plants for the balcony.Dad complained that she was leaving him no room for his chair. She told him he could stand.I heard her laugh before I reached the open door.It stopped me.I had missed that sound. There were still difficult days. Dad still went quiet whenever he saw women my age walk past.Mom kept my photograph beside their bed. Sometimes she’d talk to it about her day. Other times, she would pick up her phone and start typing a message to me, only to stop and put it down. But they began going out in the mornings.Mom learned to take videos on her phone. She would record the sea for severa

By the time the case went to trial, winter had come.Tessa wore a plain dark jacket, her hair tied back. When she entered the courtroom, she looked toward the seats behind her.Dante sat beside his father. For a moment, Tessa seemed relieved. Then she saw my parents across the aisle and looked away. The evidence took days to present. The bakery’s warnings. The false approval bearing my signature. The footage from the dressing room.I had spent so much of our relationship trying to explain why Tessa’s behavior hurt me.Now strangers read her messages aloud, and no one told me I was being too sensitive. When Tessa testified, her lawyer asked her what she had intended.“A joke,” she said. “Something funny for the wedding video.”“Did you intend to injure Isabella?”“No. Never.”She began to cry.“I know how it looks now. But we’d all known each other for years. We joked around.”Later, the prosecutor showed her the bakery’s warning.“You were told someone could suffer a serious facial or

Dante moved into the house we had been meant to share.I’d chosen it because of the windows overlooking the garden. He had wanted somewhere closer to the estate, but after our second visit, he’d handed me the keys.“You’re already deciding where the furniture goes,” he’d said. “We’re taking it.”The furniture was there now.So were the books I’d brought over, the ridiculous yellow armchair he’d pretended to hate, and two mugs waiting beside the coffee machine. My suitcase was still packed for our honeymoon.Dante left his bag by the door and walked through the rooms without turning on the lights. In the bedroom, he opened the wardrobe. My clothes filled one side. On the other, someone had hung the shirts and suits he’d sent ahead. He touched the sleeve of one of my dresses, then sat on the bed.He had brought my phone with him. The police had returned it after examining it, and Dad had let him keep it long enough to copy our photographs. For several minutes, Dante scrolled without open

In the days that followed, the investigation established how the support rod had entered through my left eye and caused a catastrophic brain injury. But I hadn’t died the moment my face hit the cake.I had still been alive when I caught Dante’s wrist.Alive when he told me to stop making a scene. No one could say for certain whether immediate help would have saved me. What they knew was that I had struggled, and the people holding me had kept holding on.Dante read that part of the report over and over. His father sat across from him. The family’s lawyer was speaking, explaining something about what Dante had known and what Tessa had concealed.Dante placed the report on the desk.“She was still alive.”The lawyer stopped.“When she grabbed me,” Dante said. “She was still alive.”His father reached across the desk, but Dante stood before he could touch him.He went upstairs and shut the bedroom door.I followed. He sat on the edge of the bed where we had slept the night before our wedd

Dante found the conversation and handed his phone to the detective.I had sent the messages the night before our wedding.Tessa seems to be planning something. Every time I ask, she laughs and tells me to wait.Whatever she’s planning, please put a stop to it. His replies were directly underneath.I’ll handle her.Nobody’s doing anything you’re not comfortable with. You have my word. The detective scrolled through the conversation, then returned the phone.Dante kept looking at the screen.I remembered how relieved I’d felt when those messages arrived. I had put my phone down and gone back to packing for our honeymoon. For once, I hadn’t felt the need to explain why I was upset. He understood. He’d promised. The videographer had recorded everything.A camera had been set up in the corner to capture the final preparations. In the confusion afterward, no one had thought to turn it off.The footage began with Marco and Enzo wheeling in the cake. There I was, smiling.I had no idea how li

Dad stood just inside the doorway, staring at me. He hadn’t moved since the paramedic spoke. Then he walked past Dante and knelt beside Mom.He put an arm around her, but his eyes stayed on my face.“Can they take that thing out?” he asked. His voice was so quiet that the paramedic leaned closer.“Please. My wife shouldn’t have to look at our daughter like this.”Mom gripped his sleeve.Only then did Dad turn to Dante.“Who did this?”Dante looked toward Tessa.Dad followed his gaze.Tessa started crying harder.“It was an accident. We were just…”“I asked him.”She fell silent.Dante swallowed.“She pushed her into the cake.”“And where were you?”He didn’t answer.Dad stood. I had seen him angry before, but never like this. He wasn’t shouting. He was waiting, watching Dante with a concentration that frightened me.“You were in here?”“Yes.”“Then why didn’t you stop it?”Dante’s face crumpled.“I thought it was a joke.”Dad looked at the broken cake, then back at me.“A joke?” He sta
