Selene’s POV

I woke up to a very soft surface, one softer than the one in the infirmary which I had fallen asleep on earlier.

“Liam?” I called out, hoping he was close by at least.

The pace of my heartbeat was so fast that I could barely hear another person’s breathing over mine. I could feel the luxury of the room without even seeing it.

“I’m right here with you, Selene.” Liam’s voice came on, and a part of me calmed down.

The floral scent of the sheets on the bed I lay on wafted into my nostrils as I turned. Even the sheets were clean, and the bed had never been used too. I could only wonder what the other parts of the room looked like.

“Where’s this place? Why were we moved to a room as luxurious as this?” I blurted out.

“I also don’t know. We were moved to the west wing and the medical care has improved too.” He responded.

“Why?”

Liam seemed to shrug in response and the frown on my face deepened.

Just as my stomach rumbled, the door was knocked upon. Liam’s footsteps pattered over to the door while I sat on the bed. I tried to tie my hair up in a bun but could only do a little. The hair was way too stubborn to stay in place.

I left it with a huff, hoping whoever was at the door wouldn’t see me. I was sure that my hair looked like a bird’s nest at the moment.

Oh boy, was I wrong!

Liam led the maids who were at the door into the room and it took everything in me not to throw the pillow on my lap at his head. He could have given me a heads up!

“Uhm, we brought your food miss.” A female voice said.

“You can leave it on the table or something. I’m not hungry yet, thank you.”

They said nothing, probably nodding too.

Liam’s footsteps pattered off, leaving me alone with the maids who were whispering to each other.

As they walked towards the door, I overheard a sentence that almost made my head reel with thoughts.

“The King ordered that she be given this room. I wonder why though.”

King Lucian was the one who specifically ordered that we be moved to this room.

Of course, he’s the only one who could have done that.

But hearing it from them made it sound… different? Warmth erupted from my heart, sending waves of signals through me.

Since when do monsters treat prisoners like royalty?

I held my stomach as I walked over to the restroom to do my morning routine. I winced a bit as I moved around, the pain from fighting the rogues earlier still weighed on my shoulders.

But I really have a baby growing in my stomach.

When I got outside, Liam was in there and he seemed tense. “What’s going on?” I asked him.

“Our rooms are being guarded. This is serious, we can’t walk freely in the kingdom as we’re being watched.”

I shrugged, sitting on the bed. “I expected that.”

“But it’s not normal.”

“That’s why we’re not staying here for long. We’d be treated like prisoners, regardless of how luxurious the room we’re given is. It’s just an upgraded prison.”

Monsters would forever be monsters after all.

We managed to eat breakfast in tense silence. When we were done, we discussed our plans a bit, and around noon, a knock came on the suite’s door.

“The king wants to see us,” Liam said when he got back from the door.

“The king?”

“Yes. His guard is waiting for us at the door.”

I frowned and he led me to where the guard stood. We walked off to god knows where and I realized that Liam was right when he said we were being watched.

This truly can’t go on forever.

We stopped at what I sensed was a door which was on the second floor.

“Go in,” the guard said and Liam pushed the door open.

The moment I stepped into the office, I almost paused. My wolf sat up in my head and I did everything in my power not to let her excitement show.

It’s either something is wrong with her, or there’s something I don’t understand. We should be cowering away from this man and not want to revel in his scent. He could really snap our necks in just one single breath.

His scent… it had a kind of effect on me that I didn’t want to acknowledge.

The man before me shouldn’t be someone whom I’d be calm in his presence. Even when I hadn’t met him, I was scared of him. The same should apply when I am in his presence.

Something is really wrong somewhere.

“You both said you were coming from Moonbound.” He started, and his voice made my heart pump faster.

“Yes, your Majesty,” Liam answered, but I could feel King Lucian’s stare on me.

And right there, a teeny tiny bit of me wanted to know what he looked like while staring at me. I had never even felt the itch to see what anyone looked like since I lost my sight.

Why’s it different with him now?

“And you…” He trailed off and I felt his gaze on me more intent this time around. “Are pregnant.” His voice seemed to hold an edge to it.

My heart raced in my chest at his words. He knows.

Of course, he does. The nurses and doctors who attended to us earlier would report to him. How did I not think about that?

My hand instinctively moved to my stomach and my throat bobbled as I swallowed thickly.

“Yes.” My voice was barely above a whisper.

“I got words that you’re affiliated with an alpha too.” He said and my face hardened. Tremor coursed through me and the room suddenly seemed to get colder than normal.

“Is this an interview session of some sort, your majesty?” I poured out every bit of respect I could in my tone, reminding myself once again that regardless of how he had treated me in particular, he’s still the king.

“You’ll answer any question that I ask you.” He said, but his answer took a little time.

Was he really shocked by my response?

“I apologize on her behalf, your majesty.” Liam cut in.

I almost even forgot that he was in the room with us. But honestly, how could I when the scent of the only person I’d always smell anytime I get into a room is the King’s? His scent always overshadowed others whenever I’m with him.

“What were you both going to do at Silvercrest?”

“We planned to stay there permanently. But the first thing we needed to get done was her eye surgery.” Liam answered.

The King took a while to answer once again and my heart couldn’t stop racing in my chest. I didn’t look away, but I’d most likely have if I could see his eyes.

“You both can leave.” He suddenly said, and my brows quirked up in surprise.

That’s all? He called us here just to ask that?

Liam stood up and I followed suit, his hand resting on my back.

I might be wrong… but I heard the king growl a bit. And even with how almost inaudible it was, goosebumps rose on my skin.

His voice stopped us in our tracks, “We found rogues at the kingdom’s border for the first time in years.”

Leo.

“Just pray that they aren’t linked to either of you. Don’t forget the promise I made to you both earlier.”

“You both have one strike now, another strike, and your unborn child will be the first to witness my wrath.

Lucian’s POVSIX YEARS LATER“Dada! The sun is out!”I was deeply asleep, the kind of sleep that had become normal over the years because I haven’t had to worry about a long-lasting problem like Vera or Axel. Other than the rare attacks of stray rogues, we haven’t had any critical problems. The thirty-five pounds of my four-year-old daughter landed on my back just like I expected and she balanced her weight there.“Kimberly. Good morning to you too.” I said with a sleepy voice.“Come, let’s go. Mom wants to give us food. She made pasta!” She yelled and at that, I got up and sat in a way that she was sitting on my lap.“Pasta?” I repeated after her she nodded her very small head.I gently placed her on the bed and went to do my morning routine quickly then went downstairs with her sitting on my neck, her hands splayed across my head.Only goodness knows where Selene got the recipe for the pasta she makes. It has been the best I have ever tasted. But sometime last month, I went against

Azriel’s POVI should have left the kingdom since the moment Selene got back, because a part of me knew that Axel might have told them at the verge of death. He’s the only one who knows the truth, and I didn't even know how he got to find out.“The observers” is a very secret organization that a whole lot of people don’t know about. The day he called me aside to tell me that he knew, I was more than shocked. And he didn’t call me for any reason, it was that he wanted me to spy on Selene and, by extension, the king.I declare because I was already getting struck enough with the guilt of knowing that I didn’t come into Selene’s life as a friend but a spy. Though I forgot my primary obligation at some point and really did become friends with her, the fact remained that she mustn’t know that I was a spy.And of course, Axel wasn’t very happy with my refusal, he threatened to rat me out to the king. The threat was very scary because I knew that he’d have evidence to back up the claims but

Selene’s POVI was discharged in the morning and Lucian negotiated the discharge paperwork that was handed over to us. He spoke to the healer, the healer’s supervisor, and the supervisor’s supervisor, all because he wanted to be sure that I wasn’t being released prematurely.I watched everything unfold from the bed where I was still sitting because he ordered me not to move. I barely have any more injuries on me anymore but I still have bandages all over me. I was too tired and sore in the chest to argue with him this morning. He finally came back to me and just like I predicted, he didn’t allow my legs to touch the floor at all. I also didn’t argue with him, and even when we got into the car and saw that he had a driver there so we could sit side by side and he’d hold my hands in both of his.I was so certain that if he had the chance, he’d cradle me on his lap.“I’m fine, Lucian. I’m really not going to die if you look away from me for a second.”“You were struck in the chest and at

Lucian’s POVThe nearest medical facility with enough equipment to handle dark magic and the kind of injury that Selene sustained was on the neutral grounds amd it was three minutes away from where we were. I had never wished that I knew medicine like I did at that moment.I carried her, half Kairos and half my own form. I could barely see through the tension rising in me, nor could I hear her heartbeat well over my racing one.I didn’t wait to use a car, Kairos was two times faster than any car we’d find. So, we cut down the three minutes to one minute and thirty seconds. When we got to the hospital and I was told to place her on a stretcher, I refused. “Where’s the room she’ll be taken to?” I asked them, knowing they’d be so slow that Kairos might fully shift right there in that hallway. They seemed to understand what was going on and really pointed me to the room that they intended to put her in. I dropped her there and only then did I look up to look around the room and it was to

Selene’s POVHe looked at Vera on the ground and the look on his face wasn’t one that I was familiar with.No one answered the question he just asked, we were all just staring at Vera’s body on the ground. More black blood pooled out of her body.I looked back at Axel and saw that he didn’t even look like what he was when he was the council head, nor did he look like he looked when he sat across from me and Lucian and confessed to being willing enough to assist with taking down Vera.He looked like a man who was consumed by guilt instead. The real and unmanaged kind of grief that didn’t care if anyone was watching.“What have you done?!” He yelled.I straightened and stood up properly, “She’s dead, Axel.” I said, still trying to figure out why he looked like he had just been told very bad news.He looked up from Vera to me and the expression on his face was no longer grief but… anger.“You killed her.” He said in an accusing tone.“She would have killed everyone in this room,” I said

Lucian’s POVShe rose up and the feeling of familiarity struck me hard. I had surely seen her before. That, I was sure of.Vera’s eyes moved from mine, going past mine to Selene who was a bit beside and behind me. She had just the exact hatred of a woman who has spent thirty years hating another person and has just gotten the opportunity to come face to face with them.“And you…” she trailed off, pointing at Selene. “You who walked in and took everything that was meant to be—”I cut her off and shook my head, “This ends tonight.”She did not come at me quietly. I swiftly moved Selene behind me while Vera stretched out her hand and moved with the speed of someone who has been using dark magic as their supplement for years, one that wasn’t in any way similar to natural speed but rather the one that seemed borrowed and was burning hard. The same vessel that she used on Selene — the dark magic — was pointed at my warriors and two of them flew across the room, hitting the wall. Selene yelp
