Chapter 4

Author: Nameless
“Dad! Dad!”

I tried to go after him, but his men forcibly held me back.

All I could do was watch him disappear into the distance, heading toward the abyss he was destined never to escape.

“Dad! How dare you leave!”

I snatched a knife from one of his men.

Shane turned around.

What he saw was me holding the blade against my throat.

“Stop!”

He cried out.

I hadn’t been bluffing.

The blade cut into my neck.

He rushed over and tried to force it down, but he couldn’t overpower me.

“I won’t leave! Is that what you want to hear? I won’t leave!”

Only then did I stop.

“Honey!”

Nancy’s eyes reddened.

Shane glanced back at her, then at the knife I was gripping tightly.

He turned around and hugged Nancy.

Then he sat down in the chair where I had tied him up earlier.

“I’ll stay a little longer and try to talk some sense into him.”

“But, honey…”

“You wait outside.”

At that moment, Mom was still a young, devoted wife who obeyed Dad’s every word.

So, she could only glare at me, stomp her foot, and leave.

Dad turned to me.

“Buddy, I can only stay with you for a little while.

“If you insist on going down this path, even I won’t be able to save you.”

I finally breathed a sigh of relief.

Even a little while was enough.

Suzy would definitely come soon.

Once she arrived, Dad would be saved.

And it was time for me to leave his life.

I crouched in front of him and rested a hand on his knee.

“It’s okay. Getting to see you one more time is enough for me.”

He froze.

After a brief silence, he spoke.

“If what you said is true, and you stopped her and me from getting married, wouldn’t you disappear too?”

I smiled.

“I won’t.”

My soul would become the happiness Dad carried with him for the rest of his life.

The cursed fate awaiting Nancy would become a blessing for Dad and Suzy’s destined love.

“Dad…”

I clasped his hand.

“Will you pat my head one last time?”

Just like he had when I was little.

Shane froze.

After a moment’s hesitation, he raised his hand.

Then he gently stroked my hair.

I curved my lips into a smile.

That was enough.

This was enough.

I closed my eyes.

But the next second, a sharp chemical smell suddenly filled my nose.

My breath caught.

It was the same sedative I had used to knock Dad unconscious earlier.

I opened my eyes wide.

Dad had pressed a handkerchief over my nose and mouth. I struggled weakly, but after inhaling too much of the sedative, my body gradually went limp.

Just before I lost consciousness, I heard the door open.

Nancy’s hurried footsteps approached.

“Honey!”

Dad stood up.

He took her hand.

“All right. Let’s go.”

“Dad… Dad…”

When I woke again, I was alone in the warehouse.

I stumbled outside.

The harbor had long since been deserted.

A cruise ship was pulling into the dock.

A woman’s frantic voice rang out.

“Don’t hold me back! I can’t let Shane marry her! Let me go!”

“Miss York, please calm down. The ship hasn’t docked yet—you could fall overboard!”

I watched the familiar figure struggle desperately to get ashore, only to be held back by her men.

A metallic sweetness rose in my throat.

Suzy’s ship arrived too late.

Before Dad decided to stay, he quietly took the sedative from Mom while hugging her.

He never changed his mind.

He only knocked me unconscious to stop me from killing myself.

“Dad, you traitor!”

“I don’t care. I’m going to save them!”“Stop being ridiculous!”The King of Hell grabbed me tightly.“There’ll be no more buying and selling salvation. From now on, they can earn their redemption by helping the Ferryman guide the dead across the River Styx.”I stared at him in surprise. He sighed and rubbed her temples.“I never imagined you’d do absolutely anything to return to the day your father got married.“If I’d known how desperately you wanted it, I would have approved your request long ago.”I blinked.“You… You didn’t want me to go back?”“Go back? So, you could keep throwing your life away trying to save him? If your father never got married, you wouldn’t even have a soul.”“I know…”A helpless look crossed his face, but he patiently continued.“If I hadn’t forcibly preserved your soul, you would have already dissolved into nothingness.”“Thank you, but if I had the chance to do it all over again, I’d still make the same choice.”He fell silent. Then he swished her sleeve,

“No.”I smiled.“I went back to secure Dad’s happiness for the rest of his life. Why would I regret it?”In their first lifetime, Dad and Suzy arrived at the Bridge of Requiter together. They had both died peacefully of old age.Dad paused as they passed me.He turned and glanced at the stone beside the bridge.“What is it?” Suzy asked. He shook his head.“Nothing.”Fifty years later, a brother and sister arrived. They both turned around at the same time, their gazes falling on me.“Don’t you think that stone looks strange?”“You think so too?”“Yeah… It feels as if we’ve seen it before…”“Haha! You’re imagining things, sis. How could we possibly know a stone?”They disappeared into the distance amid laughter, drank the potion of forgetfulness, and set off toward their new lives. In their second lifetime, Dad and Suzy were childhood sweethearts once again. They grew up together, but this time, they never ended up together.Dad joined the police force and died heroically in the line of

Only then did I realize I hadn’t been the only one condemned to cross the River Styx and endure the endless torment of the underworld. Not long after I earned a place to return to the day Dad married, Dad had also been granted permission to return to that day.“I know why you came. But Eli, you were never the cause of Dad’s unhappiness.“Neither were you responsible for my failures. We were father and son before this, and we’ll still be father and son afterward.”I shook my head.“No… You can’t…”He cut me off.“Eli, if you’re gone, Dad has no reason to go on living.”As he spoke, he took a step backward.“No!”I reached out my hand.Dad might have been naive, but once he made up his mind, nothing could sway him.If I refused, he would throw himself over the railing.Nancy stared at us in astonishment.“What are you two talking about?”I ignored her.Instead, I slowly lowered my hand.“I… I understand…”I led my men backward.“I won’t interfere in your lives anymore. Dad, I’m glad I go

By the time I stumbled back to the wedding venue, the ceremony had already ended.“Did you hear? Mr. Lowe isn’t planning to stay here. He’s leaving the country with Miss York to start a new life overseas as soon as the wedding is over.”“What? Didn’t Miss York already establish her businesses here? Why is she suddenly leaving?”“There’s nothing she can do. Miss York has always obeyed her husband.”“Ah… If only I had a devoted wife like Miss York…”What?I grabbed a passerby.“Which way did they go?”By the time I reached the harbor in a frenzy, Dad had already boarded the ship.He reached out a hand and was about to pull Nancy aboard.“Dad!”I stumbled and fell to the ground.“Dad! You can’t leave with her!”Nancy shot me an irritated glance. The passersby also looked at me curiously.“Is this kid insane? He’s so young, yet he’s calling someone his own age ‘Dad’?”Shane turned around.I reached out to him.“Dad! No!”He let out a sigh. Then he turned away and pulled Nancy aboard. The s

Suzy is the one who truly has your best interests at heart.”He hid the fear in his eyes and forced a smile.“Buddy, you don’t have to lie to me. Let me go, and I’ll help you escape. I swear I won’t let her find you.
