Chapter 2

Autor: By Lucky Stars
The moment the call connected, an angry male voice came blasting through the speaker.

"Joan Thorne, what more do you want? Kayla knelt there until her knees were swollen, and those thorny branches left puncture wounds all over her back. She's about to make her debut, but you don't seem to care at all. Are you even a Thorne?"

Mom shot me a look for answering the call, then took a deep breath. "My name is Joan Newell. I'm not a Thorne."

That only made Gordon angrier.

"The DNA test already proved everything. Why are you still refusing to accept it? Mom and Dad are getting older. They just want you to come home so they can enjoy their later years in peace. Do you really have to go against them on everything?"

Mom set the phone on the table and sighed. "Mr. Thorne, I don't want to have to say this a third time. I have parents of my own. They're gone now, but they're the ones who raised me and gave me all the love I could ever ask for.

"We may be related by blood, but beyond that, we're strangers. So stop telling me what to do. You don't have that right."

After switching Mom at birth, the nanny had someone take her to a remote mountain village. Mom was later adopted by a couple with no children of their own, and they raised her with love and care.

She never went without food or clothes, and she never lacked love. She grew up healthy, both physically and emotionally.

After college, she married Dad, a police officer, and later had me. We lived a peaceful, happy life.

Aside from losing Dad in the line of duty a year ago, Mom had never had much to worry about.

Gordon still insisted on calling Mom Joan Thorne.

"Mom and Dad are your biological parents. That makes you a Thorne, and that's the name you should be using. I don't understand why you're so determined to hang on to that little diner.

"Wouldn't you rather come home and live like an heiress? And even if you don't care about any of that for yourself, think about your daughter. She's starting elementary school soon, isn't she? Don't you want her to have access to better schools?"

Mom turned to look at me.

I planted my hands on my hips. "You're exactly the kind of preachy middle-aged guy Dad used to complain about. No wonder Mommy doesn't like you. I don't like you either."

Gordon was speechless for a moment.

"And I don't want to go to some school your family sends me to. Your whole family's just putting on a show."

I'd gotten that from Ms. Warner next door. She'd said there was quite a show going on outside our diner today.

"You're just a kid, and you think you can talk about your elders like that? Kayla is your aunt. Apologize to her right now!" Gordon roared.

His shout startled me so badly that I jumped in my chair. Mom quickly pulled me into her arms.

The second Gordon turned his anger on me, Mom's voice went cold. "You have no authority over Eliza, and you have no right to tell her how to behave. Don't bother us again."

Before Gordon could say another word, Mom hung up and blocked his number.

Then she turned and gave me a long look. "Hold out your hand. Which hand did you use to answer the phone?"

I squeezed my eyes shut and held out my right hand. Mom gave my palm three quick swats without holding back.

I had to fight back a grin. They barely hurt.

After running around all day, Mom was too tired to scold me anymore. She took me home, gave me a bath, and put me to bed.

Before I fell asleep, I did what I always did. I held Dad's photo and told him everything that had happened that day.

"Daddy, someone was mean to Mommy today. But don't worry. I'm really strong, and I'll protect her."

I waved my little fist in the air. If they dared come back, I'd make them sorry.

A second later, I was fast asleep.

Mom gently took the photo from my arms and wiped the glass even though there wasn't a speck of dust on it.

Then she murmured, "Honey, do you think I'm doing the right thing?"

Dad smiled back at her from the photo, as if he would support whatever she decided.

  • My Mom Walked Away from a Fortune   Chapter 10

That day, Mom wasn't there when school got out.Kayla was.My teacher knew who Kayla was, and she refused to let her take me.Kayla tossed a wedding invitation in front of me. "Tell your mom to bring you to my wedding. Henry and I grew up together. Too bad your mom wasn't the one who grew up with him. If she had been, she wouldn't be a widow now."Nothing made me angrier than someone using Dad's death to hurt Mom. Dad had died in the line of duty. He was a hero.My eyes stung as I grabbed my stainless steel pencil case and hurled it at Kayla's face as hard as I could. She wasn't expecting it, and it caught her right on the bridge of the nose.Kayla sucked in a sharp breath as the pencil case clattered to the ground. She covered her nose and glared at me. "You're just as annoying as your mother."I glared right back. "You're the most annoying person in the whole world. You took 30 years of my mom's life. Have you ever done anything to make up for it? What gives you the right to

Kayla let out an angry laugh. "Nothing to do with you? That's a good one. If you hadn't refused to go back no matter what, why would they have kicked me out? How was I ever a threat to you?"The Thornes have more than enough money. You could've taken 80% and left me 20. Why did you have to leave me with nothing?"Mom gave her a mocking look. "Funny how you're only offering me 80% now that you've lost everything."Kayla's face tightened."Move. You're blocking our way home."Kayla clenched her fists, her chest heaving. "I'm not giving up, Joan. You think you're going to have it easy? Just wait and see!"With that, she climbed into a black luxury car and drove off.Kayla already had a bit of a following, and Henry used his family connections to open doors for her. She landed several more reality shows and played up the image of a beautiful, strong woman who had been through hell. Before long, she blew up, and things quickly got bad for us. Mom eventually had no choice but to clos

After that day, the Thornes disappeared for quite a while.Mom and I both thought they were finally done with us. The drama online slowly died down too. Then something big happened in our family.I was starting elementary school!Mom helped me into my brand-new uniform and walked me to the school entrance. The teachers greeted me warmly, and one of them took my hand and gave me the best seat in the classroom. At lunch, I was always first in line. Whenever we got to choose where to sit for an activity, I always got first pick. Whenever I raised my hand, the teachers always called on me.And when school let out, they helped me pack up before anyone else and walked me out to Mom.When I told Mom all about it, she paused."Mommy, I'm really popular, aren't I?""The Thornes probably pulled some strings at the school."I scrunched up my face. Why couldn't those people just leave us alone? I really hated them."So people don't just like me because they like me?"I sighed and tighte

Mom's arms suddenly tightened around me.After a long silence, she finally answered, "Because it isn't fair."I glared at the Thornes. They were the ones who had lost Mom in the first place, and all of this had happened because of that bad woman's mom.But they didn't seem guilty, and they hadn't tried to make it up to Mom. Instead, they showed up expecting her to go back and reunite with them just so they could have the family they wanted.Had they ever stopped to think about what Mom wanted? Even I understood that, and I was only five. Did these grown-ups really not get it?No. It wasn't that they didn't understand. They just didn't think Mom's feelings mattered. They didn't really care about her, so Mom shouldn't care about them either."Come home with us. Whatever Kayla has, we'll give you the same, or even more. If it's money you want, here. Take these checks and fill in any amount you want."They pulled out a stack of blank checks."You don't have to compete with Kayla fo

Mom came back from the private conversation looking even more upset."I don't want the money, and I'm not settling. I want Henry to face the consequences."I nodded. I hated him. He had such a nasty mouth and kept saying horrible things about Mom.The woman pleaded, "We can still negotiate the amount."Mom held me in her arms and refused to back down.Henry clearly hadn't expected her to stand her ground. He cut the woman off. "Don't beg someone like her. Get me a lawyer. I don't believe she can get me convicted over this."Mom looked at him calmly. "Even if you don't get convicted, I still want all of you to understand that not everything can be solved with money."Henry sneered. "That's pretty rich coming from you. You won't even acknowledge your own parents unless they give you money."Mom gave him a sidelong glance. "Isn't it better for you if I don't go back? If I do, your precious Kayla might have to worry about losing her place. You don't actually think she got down on h

Henry got up from the couch and glared at Mom and me, his expression dark.Kayla pressed her lips together. "Joan, Henry didn't mean any harm. He scared Eliza, but he already apologized. He only did it because of me. Can you please not call the police?"If you're still angry, take it out on me. Yell at me, hit me, whatever you want. This is all because of me."Her eyes began to redden.Mom gave a cold smile. "Today he kidnapped my daughter for you. What about tomorrow? Is he going to kill someone for you too? And if he does, are you going to put on that pitiful act and beg everyone to let him off again?""Shut up! Go ahead and call the police. You think I'm scared of you?" Henry shouted.Kayla went pale and tugged at his sleeve, trying to get him to stop."We're family. Do you really have to take this so far?" Gordon asked, looking at Mom in disappointment."We're not family!" I shouted as tears spilled down my cheeks."I don't have family like you! You're all bad people. All
