Chapter 3

Author: By Lucky Stars
With the Bloomtide Festival going on, Mom opened the diner an hour earlier than usual.

The moment she unlocked the door, several young people with cameras in hand rushed inside and crowded around her.

"Are you really Joan Thorne, the Thorne family's biological daughter?"

"Your birth parents are both in the hospital. Is it true you won't even acknowledge them unless they give you money?"

"We heard your husband died, and you've been raising your daughter alone while running this little diner. Is that true?"

"Don't you want your daughter to have the kind of life a wealthy family could give her?"

"Just because you had to struggle, are you going to make your daughter struggle too?"

"Do you hate Kayla Thorne so much that you made her kneel there with thorny branches tied across her back and beg you to forgive her?"

Late the night before, Kayla had posted a single sighing emoji on social media and nothing else. She hadn't said a word, but the comments had already gone wild.

By morning, Mom had already been branded online as a woman who wanted money but nothing to do with her birth parents.

The questions came at her one after another, but Mom didn't look rattled. She immediately pulled me behind her so I wouldn't get caught in the middle.

"My name is Joan Newell. What news outlet are you with? Do you have press credentials? Please show them to me."

The group exchanged uneasy glances.

"Please answer our questions first."

The man shoved his phone so close to Mom's face it was practically touching her. She didn't flinch. She just looked him straight in the eye.

One second passed, then two, then three.

The man swallowed and slowly lowered his phone.

"I don't owe you any answers. If you're here to eat, come inside. If not, please leave. I have other customers to take care of."

Mom carried me off to the side and told me not to wander off before going back to work.

The group still wouldn't give up and followed her around, but Mom ignored them completely. They could film her all they wanted as long as they didn't invade the other customers' privacy.

Heavily edited clips of Mom went viral online, and people started slapping all kinds of nasty labels on her.

"So, you're the daughter of that woman trying to make money off her birth family?"

A man tipped my chin up with one finger.

It was the last day of the Bloomtide Festival. I was playing in a little pond with a few of my friends, splashing around and catching fish. Without warning, he grabbed me by the arm and hauled me right out of the water.

I stared at him with wide eyes. He was dressed all in black, with a mask and sunglasses hiding most of his face. Something told me he was bad news.

I didn't say a word. I just flung the water from my little bucket straight into his face. "Put me down! Who are you?"

The man wiped his face. "Pretty bold for a little girl."

He tossed my bucket aside, carried me over to a black car, and got in with me.

"Go get my mom!" I shouted back at my friends, who were still standing there in shock.

The man let out a mocking laugh. He took me to Thorne Manor.

The elderly couple I'd seen before was there, along with the middle-aged man who looked a lot like Mom and the woman who had knelt outside our diner and put on that whole performance.

They all looked startled when they saw me, then immediately looked past me.

Mom wasn't there.

Kayla asked, "Henry, what's going on?"

Henry dropped me onto the floor and crossed his arms. "You've all been way too nice about this. If you want that woman back in the Thorne family, it's easy. Just find her weak spot and use it."

Gordon's expression changed. He opened his mouth to protest, but before he could get a word out, I darted over to a flowerpot.

I grabbed a pebble and threw it at Henry's head. Then I grabbed another. "You kidnapped me! That's against the law! You're in big trouble! I'm calling the police!"

Everyone froze.

Linda Kinsey, the elderly woman, stood up and gave me a gentle look. "You're Eliza, right? I'm your grandmother. We're family. We just wanted to see you. No one here is going to hurt you, so don't be scared, sweetheart."

I lifted my chin and planted my hands on my hips. "I already have a grandma. And if you wanted to see me, why did you have someone grab me and bring me here? You're all grown-ups. Don't you know that's against the law?"

I was only five, and even I knew that!

That day, Mom wasn't there when school got out.Kayla was.My teacher knew who Kayla was, and she refused to let her take me.Kayla tossed a wedding invitation in front of me. "Tell your mom to bring you to my wedding. Henry and I grew up together. Too bad your mom wasn't the one who grew up with him. If she had been, she wouldn't be a widow now."Nothing made me angrier than someone using Dad's death to hurt Mom. Dad had died in the line of duty. He was a hero.My eyes stung as I grabbed my stainless steel pencil case and hurled it at Kayla's face as hard as I could. She wasn't expecting it, and it caught her right on the bridge of the nose.Kayla sucked in a sharp breath as the pencil case clattered to the ground. She covered her nose and glared at me. "You're just as annoying as your mother."I glared right back. "You're the most annoying person in the whole world. You took 30 years of my mom's life. Have you ever done anything to make up for it? What gives you the right to

Kayla let out an angry laugh. "Nothing to do with you? That's a good one. If you hadn't refused to go back no matter what, why would they have kicked me out? How was I ever a threat to you?"The Thornes have more than enough money. You could've taken 80% and left me 20. Why did you have to leave me with nothing?"Mom gave her a mocking look. "Funny how you're only offering me 80% now that you've lost everything."Kayla's face tightened."Move. You're blocking our way home."Kayla clenched her fists, her chest heaving. "I'm not giving up, Joan. You think you're going to have it easy? Just wait and see!"With that, she climbed into a black luxury car and drove off.Kayla already had a bit of a following, and Henry used his family connections to open doors for her. She landed several more reality shows and played up the image of a beautiful, strong woman who had been through hell. Before long, she blew up, and things quickly got bad for us. Mom eventually had no choice but to clos

After that day, the Thornes disappeared for quite a while.Mom and I both thought they were finally done with us. The drama online slowly died down too. Then something big happened in our family.I was starting elementary school!Mom helped me into my brand-new uniform and walked me to the school entrance. The teachers greeted me warmly, and one of them took my hand and gave me the best seat in the classroom. At lunch, I was always first in line. Whenever we got to choose where to sit for an activity, I always got first pick. Whenever I raised my hand, the teachers always called on me.And when school let out, they helped me pack up before anyone else and walked me out to Mom.When I told Mom all about it, she paused."Mommy, I'm really popular, aren't I?""The Thornes probably pulled some strings at the school."I scrunched up my face. Why couldn't those people just leave us alone? I really hated them."So people don't just like me because they like me?"I sighed and tighte

Mom's arms suddenly tightened around me.After a long silence, she finally answered, "Because it isn't fair."I glared at the Thornes. They were the ones who had lost Mom in the first place, and all of this had happened because of that bad woman's mom.But they didn't seem guilty, and they hadn't tried to make it up to Mom. Instead, they showed up expecting her to go back and reunite with them just so they could have the family they wanted.Had they ever stopped to think about what Mom wanted? Even I understood that, and I was only five. Did these grown-ups really not get it?No. It wasn't that they didn't understand. They just didn't think Mom's feelings mattered. They didn't really care about her, so Mom shouldn't care about them either."Come home with us. Whatever Kayla has, we'll give you the same, or even more. If it's money you want, here. Take these checks and fill in any amount you want."They pulled out a stack of blank checks."You don't have to compete with Kayla fo

Mom came back from the private conversation looking even more upset."I don't want the money, and I'm not settling. I want Henry to face the consequences."I nodded. I hated him. He had such a nasty mouth and kept saying horrible things about Mom.The woman pleaded, "We can still negotiate the amount."Mom held me in her arms and refused to back down.Henry clearly hadn't expected her to stand her ground. He cut the woman off. "Don't beg someone like her. Get me a lawyer. I don't believe she can get me convicted over this."Mom looked at him calmly. "Even if you don't get convicted, I still want all of you to understand that not everything can be solved with money."Henry sneered. "That's pretty rich coming from you. You won't even acknowledge your own parents unless they give you money."Mom gave him a sidelong glance. "Isn't it better for you if I don't go back? If I do, your precious Kayla might have to worry about losing her place. You don't actually think she got down on h

Henry got up from the couch and glared at Mom and me, his expression dark.Kayla pressed her lips together. "Joan, Henry didn't mean any harm. He scared Eliza, but he already apologized. He only did it because of me. Can you please not call the police?"If you're still angry, take it out on me. Yell at me, hit me, whatever you want. This is all because of me."Her eyes began to redden.Mom gave a cold smile. "Today he kidnapped my daughter for you. What about tomorrow? Is he going to kill someone for you too? And if he does, are you going to put on that pitiful act and beg everyone to let him off again?""Shut up! Go ahead and call the police. You think I'm scared of you?" Henry shouted.Kayla went pale and tugged at his sleeve, trying to get him to stop."We're family. Do you really have to take this so far?" Gordon asked, looking at Mom in disappointment."We're not family!" I shouted as tears spilled down my cheeks."I don't have family like you! You're all bad people. All
