Chapter 4

Author: By Lucky Stars
A mix of emotions crossed everyone's faces.

Kayla walked over and gently reached both hands out to me. "Eliza, I'm your aunt. Henry is my friend. He didn't mean any harm by bringing you here. Can you forgive him?"

Henry looked at her like he was completely smitten.

I backed away two steps before she could touch me and tilted my head. "So because he's your friend, he can break the law and just be forgiven?"

That wasn't what Dad had taught me when he was still alive.

Kayla's smile stiffened. She glanced at me out of the corner of her eye, then stepped back, looking hurt.

Henry immediately jumped to her defense. "You nasty little brat. You're just like that damn mother of yours, always mouthing off and getting on everyone's nerves."

I bit my lip as tears welled in my eyes. I was furious. I hated him so much I wanted to hit him.

"Henry, how could you say that about my sister and niece? Apologize right now."

The rest of the Thornes looked just as displeased.

Henry glanced around at them, then reluctantly turned back to me. "Sorry, okay? You're awfully sensitive for a little kid."

Gordon tried to call Mom, but none of his calls went through. That was when he realized she had blocked him.

Kayla immediately pulled out her phone. "Gordon, let me call Joan. She's probably still mad at me, so don't blame her."

Mom answered almost instantly. "Is Eliza with you?"

"Mommy, I'm here!"

Kayla didn't even get a chance to answer before I burst into tears. I'd been trying so hard not to cry, but the second I heard Mom's voice, I couldn't hold it in anymore. All I wanted was for her to come get me.

"Eliza, don't cry. Mommy will be there soon."

After the call ended, I curled up in a corner and refused to let anyone come near me. No matter what toys they brought over, I just stared at them like they were monsters.

Mom finally appeared at the entrance to Thorne Manor looking disheveled. She still had her apron on, and her hair was a mess. The moment she saw me, she let out a breath of relief.

"Eliza, come to Mommy."

I shoved past Kayla, who was hovering in front of me pretending to care, and threw myself into Mom's arms. Mom let out a soft "ow."

Linda sighed. "Joan, don't blame Henry for acting without thinking. He couldn't stand seeing Kayla go through all this because of you, and he knew how badly we wanted to see you.

"We've watched him grow up. He can be a handful, but he never meant you or Eliza any harm."

By then, Henry had taken off his sunglasses and mask, revealing a handsome face. He lounged on the couch without a care in the world and didn't even bother glancing at us.

"What's that fishy smell? Who brought the fish market in here?"

The smell was coming from Mom, but I pressed even closer against her chest. I didn't think it smelled bad at all.

Linda frowned. "You're a Thorne. There's no reason for you to work yourself to the bone serving people all day. Come home, and whatever you want to eat, I'll have a chef make it for you."

Alfred Thorne, the elderly man, leaned on his cane, his cold gaze settling on Mom's rough hands.

"So you're blaming us, and that's why you refuse to come home?"

Then he seemed to remember something and scoffed. "Your mother and I were both sick, and you still couldn't even be bothered to come see us."

Despite everyone in the room criticizing her, Mom didn't react. She picked me up and headed for the door.

"I already called the police. Maybe this will finally teach you that you can't just do whatever you want."

Gordon stepped in front of us, his face dark with anger. "Joan, stop right there! Call them back and tell them not to come!"

That day, Mom wasn't there when school got out.Kayla was.My teacher knew who Kayla was, and she refused to let her take me.Kayla tossed a wedding invitation in front of me. "Tell your mom to bring you to my wedding. Henry and I grew up together. Too bad your mom wasn't the one who grew up with him. If she had been, she wouldn't be a widow now."Nothing made me angrier than someone using Dad's death to hurt Mom. Dad had died in the line of duty. He was a hero.My eyes stung as I grabbed my stainless steel pencil case and hurled it at Kayla's face as hard as I could. She wasn't expecting it, and it caught her right on the bridge of the nose.Kayla sucked in a sharp breath as the pencil case clattered to the ground. She covered her nose and glared at me. "You're just as annoying as your mother."I glared right back. "You're the most annoying person in the whole world. You took 30 years of my mom's life. Have you ever done anything to make up for it? Kayla let out an angry laugh. "Nothing to do with you? That's a good one. If you hadn't refused to go back no matter what, why would they have kicked me out? How was I ever a threat to you?"The Thornes have more than enough money. You could've taken 80% and left me 20. Why did you have to leave me with nothing?"Mom gave her a mocking look. "Funny how you're only offering me 80% now that you've lost everything."Kayla's face tightened."Move. You're blocking our way home."Kayla clenched her fists, her chest heaving. "I'm not giving up, Joan. You think you're going to have it easy? Just wait and see!"With that, she climbed into a black luxury car and drove off.Kayla already had a bit of a following, and Henry used his family connections to open doors for her. She landed several more reality shows and played up the image of a beautiful, strong woman who had been through hell. Before long, she blew up, and things quickly got bad for us. After that day, the Thornes disappeared for quite a while.Mom and I both thought they were finally done with us. The drama online slowly died down too. Then something big happened in our family.I was starting elementary school!Mom helped me into my brand-new uniform and walked me to the school entrance. The teachers greeted me warmly, and one of them took my hand and gave me the best seat in the classroom. At lunch, I was always first in line. Whenever we got to choose where to sit for an activity, I always got first pick. Whenever I raised my hand, the teachers always called on me.And when school let out, they helped me pack up before anyone else and walked me out to Mom.When I told Mom all about it, she paused."Mommy, I'm really popular, aren't I?""The Thornes probably pulled some strings at the school."I scrunched up my face. Why couldn't those people just leave us alone? I really hated them."So people don't just like me because they like me?"I sighed and tighte

Mom's arms suddenly tightened around me.After a long silence, she finally answered, "Because it isn't fair."I glared at the Thornes. They were the ones who had lost Mom in the first place, and all of this had happened because of that bad woman's mom.But they didn't seem guilty, and they hadn't tried to make it up to Mom. Instead, they showed up expecting her to go back and reunite with them just so they could have the family they wanted.Had they ever stopped to think about what Mom wanted? Even I understood that, and I was only five. Did these grown-ups really not get it?No. It wasn't that they didn't understand. They just didn't think Mom's feelings mattered. They didn't really care about her, so Mom shouldn't care about them either."Come home with us. Whatever Kayla has, we'll give you the same, or even more. If it's money you want, here. Take these checks and fill in any amount you want."They pulled out a stack of blank checks."You don't have to compete with Kayla fo

Mom came back from the private conversation looking even more upset."I don't want the money, and I'm not settling. I want Henry to face the consequences."I nodded. I hated him. He had such a nasty mouth and kept saying horrible things about Mom.The woman pleaded, "We can still negotiate the amount."Mom held me in her arms and refused to back down.Henry clearly hadn't expected her to stand her ground. He cut the woman off. "Don't beg someone like her. Get me a lawyer. I don't believe she can get me convicted over this."Mom looked at him calmly. "Even if you don't get convicted, I still want all of you to understand that not everything can be solved with money."Henry sneered. "That's pretty rich coming from you. You won't even acknowledge your own parents unless they give you money."Mom gave him a sidelong glance. "Isn't it better for you if I don't go back? If I do, your precious Kayla might have to worry about losing her place. You don't actually think she got down on h

Henry got up from the couch and glared at Mom and me, his expression dark.Kayla pressed her lips together. "Joan, Henry didn't mean any harm. He scared Eliza, but he already apologized. He only did it because of me. Can you please not call the police?"If you're still angry, take it out on me. Yell at me, hit me, whatever you want. This is all because of me."Her eyes began to redden.Mom gave a cold smile. "Today he kidnapped my daughter for you. What about tomorrow? Is he going to kill someone for you too? And if he does, are you going to put on that pitiful act and beg everyone to let him off again?""Shut up! Go ahead and call the police. You think I'm scared of you?" Henry shouted.Kayla went pale and tugged at his sleeve, trying to get him to stop."We're family. Do you really have to take this so far?" Gordon asked, looking at Mom in disappointment."We're not family!" I shouted as tears spilled down my cheeks."I don't have family like you! You're all bad people. All
