Chapter 2

Penulis: Hyacinth
With twenty-six days left before my departure, an email arrived from the Northern Research Council.

[FINAL REVIEW COMPLETE]

[Dr. Evelyn Harper's shift-trauma stabilizer has passed its last laboratory review. Following a successful public demonstration, the formula will be added to the Northern Royal Medical Center's emergency protocol under its creator's name.]

I'd spent four sleepless months testing the formula until I produced three stable doses. I locked them in a temperature-controlled medicine case, ready for the council representative the next morning.

That night, Chloe came home crying.

During a practice session, she mixed the wrong dose, destroyed her sample, and nearly sent a volunteer's wolf into dormancy. The board gave her one last chance: produce a safe stabilizer within forty-eight hours or lose her eligibility.

Margaret held her on the couch for nearly an hour. "It was one mistake. It doesn't mean you're not capable."

Chloe shook her head through her tears. "I can't do it. The stabilizer is too hard. Evelyn got it right on her first try, and I've failed six times."

Her gaze drifted toward my medicine case.

Margaret followed it.

I stepped in front of the case. "Those are my research samples."

My mother held out her hand. "Give her one."

It was the first complete demand she had made of me in years. I didn't even have time to mourn that before anger scorched through my chest.

"Candidates have to make their own samples. If she submits mine, it's fraud."

Chloe bit her lip, and fresh tears spilled over. "Forget it, Mom. Evelyn is already a Chief Healer. Of course her formula matters more than my whole career."

She said forget it while staring at the case like she was waiting for someone else to open it.

Margaret's expression hardened. "You already have the northern appointment, the council's approval, and a fully awakened wolf. Chloe needs one chance to prove herself."

"By taking my work and calling it hers?"

"You can make another batch."

She said it as if my lost sleep, failed experiments, and burned hands meant no more than a cup of sugar Chloe needed to borrow.

I tightened my grip on the handle. "No."

Disbelief flashed in Margaret's eyes. I had always yielded eventually, and she clearly expected tonight to be no different.

"Evelyn, she has already lost so much because of me."

There it was. The phrase that ended every argument in our house.

When Chloe was six, a fever sent her wolf into dormancy for seven years. Margaret never explained it. She simply invoked that suffering whenever Chloe wanted something of mine.

"Whatever happened is between you and Chloe," I said. "It isn't a license to take pieces out of my life."

Margaret froze.

She grabbed the case and pressed the family emergency release. Her credentials still overrode mine. The lock snapped open, and she handed one stabilizer to Chloe.

I lunged for it, but Margaret blocked me with her body. "Enough. You still have two."

Chloe hugged the sample to her chest. "I'm sorry, Evelyn. Once I pass, I'll make this up to you. I promise."

That was how she always did it. She took first and apologized second, but somehow never returned a damn thing.

I stopped reaching for the vial and pulled out my phone. In front of both of them, I called the examination board's fraud hotline.

All the color drained from Chloe's face. "What are you doing?"

"Protecting my work."

Margaret snatched the phone and ended the call. "Do you have to ruin her?"

I took my phone back and laughed once. "So stopping her from stealing my work means I'm ruining her. Got it."

Margaret opened her mouth, but no answer came.

I turned toward my room. As I closed the door, I heard Chloe ask in a wounded little voice, "Does Evelyn really hate me that much?"

Margaret's reply was soft and immediate. "Life has always come easily to her. She doesn't understand how hard you've had to fight for everything."

My hand paused on the doorknob.

Then I shut the door, packed the remaining two samples in my suitcase, and sent the Northern Council proof of ownership and a formal theft notice before dawn.

I left Chloe's name out—not to protect her, but because I'd decided that vial would be the last thing this family ever took from me.

Margaret didn't leave the north right away. The next day, she brought papers to cancel my pack transfer.I refused to sign.On the third night, she waited outside the medical center until dawn. When I arrived, she didn't demand that I return. She only asked for one chance to make amends.I agreed to see her one last time.We met in the Northern Pack Registry Office. The Alpha, Aurora, and a pack registrar were present as witnesses. I placed a legal renunciation of family authority in front of Margaret. The declaration couldn't erase our blood, but it removed her rights as my emergency contact, asset representative, and medical decision-maker. She could no longer claim authority over my work, home, treatment, or pack. The last trace of color vanished from her face as she read it. "Does it have to go this far?""Yes.""I know I was wrong.""Scott won't come back, and neither will the years I lost."The pen hovered above the signature line. "What if I stop choosing Chloe over you?"I look

Margaret asked Black Pine's Alpha to arrange a meeting with the Northern Royal Pack. The north respected her status as a Word Witch, but denied her access to my home. She waited at the Royal Medical Center while staff asked if I would see her. When word of her arrival reached me, I was in the final review for adding my stabilizer to the northern emergency standard. The Research Council had just approved the formula by unanimous vote.Healers gathered to congratulate me and ask about training. Aurora presented my Northern Royal Chief Healer badge in person.Through the glass wall, Margaret watched it all with a dazed expression. She had probably never seen me like this.To her, I was the daughter who needed no attention and handled everything alone. She knew my title but had never bothered to understand it.A staff member approached me quietly. "Dr. Harper, do you want to see her?"I looked toward the reception area.Margaret had lost weight. Shadows lay beneath her eyes, and her claspe

Two weeks after I left Black Pine, a patrol vehicle overturned on a rain-slick road. Nine injured wolves reached the Harper center at once.In mass-casualty emergencies, I divided patients by severity and assigned separate teams to shift injuries and ordinary trauma.Chloe sent everyone into the same treatment room. She couldn't read my triage marks and refused to admit it. By the time a senior healer noticed, one patrolman was in shock from incompatible medications."Call Evelyn!" someone shouted.Chloe froze. She had been texting me for two weeks without receiving a single reply.By the time Margaret reached the center, the emergency wing was in chaos. Chloe grabbed her hand, trembling. "Mom, I didn't mean for this to happen. Evelyn didn't give me the complete protocol. She knew something like this could happen."Margaret opened her mouth, instinctively reaching for a blessing.Fire tore through her throat. She had used this month's words on Chloe's presentation. The blessing made he

On my first day in the north, I slept for thirteen hours.Snow was falling when I woke. For one sleepy second, I almost called Scott to come play in it. His name reached the back of my throat before I remembered there would never again be paws scratching at my door. The silence pressed down until I could barely breathe. I sat on the bed until Luna Aurora called."Evelyn, I'm sorry to disturb you. The kitchen left dinner outside your door hours ago, and no one has seen you collect it. Are you all right?"I realized I hadn't eaten since the previous day. "I'm fine. Just tired.""You lost someone who had been family to you for years. A long nap doesn't make that fine."Aurora didn't interrogate me or tell me to pull myself together. "I'll have the kitchen reheat your dinner. Your start date can wait. The north won't question your ability because you need a few days to grieve."My nose stung. In Black Pine, Margaret answered my exhaustion by reminding me Chloe was more fragile. Now a woman

Margaret returned home after midnight. The Pack Medical Council had interrupted Chloe's celebration to announce that the Harper center's emergency certification was under review.Margaret had called me eleven times from the center. Chloe had sent messages ordering me to come back and fix the problem.I answered neither of them.Margaret entered the living room and stopped. My Black Pine badge lay on the table beside the finalized transfer notice.[PACK TRANSFER CONFIRMATION][Former member: Evelyn Harper][New affiliation: Northern Royal Pack][Status: Permanent]Beside it lay Scott's broken red collar.Until that moment, Margaret had been angry. She believed I had transferred packs to punish her, leaving behind a crisis she should never have been forced to handle. Then she saw the blood dried into the red leather.Standing alone in the silent room, she finally remembered the alarm she'd heard through the phone. She had heard me begging her to save Scott. But Chloe had been minutes awa

For the next three weeks, I didn't argue with Margaret.I transferred my cases, packed, remade the research samples, and checked Scott's kennel every day.Margaret mistook my silence for surrender.Chloe moved into my old office and replaced the pictures on the wall. Then she put her name on the emergency procedures I had written. Every so often, she texted me.[CHLOE: Where do you keep the post-op observation forms?][CHLOE: What dose of sedative is safe for a young wolf during a shift?][CHLOE: I have a board presentation tomorrow. Can you send me your old reports so I have something to work from?]I didn't answer a single message. She had been given my title, not my skill. On the first morning after the full moon, Margaret and Chloe brought workers to collect old center records. I was upstairs confirming my transfer date by video when the yard alarm beeped.By the time I ran downstairs, the gate was closing and a delivery van was disappearing around the corner. The outside door of S
