Chapter 1

Only when I saw my motionless body on the ground did I realize I was dead.

Other members of the Family stood nearby. Our underboss, Lucas Grant, led them into a circle around me.

Lucas called my name several times, but I did not move. The others began muttering under their breath.

He touched my arm uneasily. "Miss Sophie Freeman, please get up. This man betrayed our Family. We're punishing a traitor, not killing people at random."

I remained facedown as if I had heard nothing.

I ran to him and shouted, "It's not that I won't move. I'm dead. Tell my mother!"

No one heard me. When I tried to tap Lucas on the shoulder, my hand passed straight through him.

He called to me a few more times. When I still did not respond, his patience finally ran out. But because I was the Donna's daughter, he could only go to her, his face grim.

"Donna Freeman, please come check on Miss Sophie. She's still lying on the ground, and the execution can't continue with her in the way."

Mom followed his gesture. My body lay in the middle of the execution ground, leaving the Family members helpless and the two condemned men waiting.

Fury blazed in her eyes. She strode over, hauled me up by the collar, and slapped me twice across the face.

Before, I would have trembled so badly that I would not even have dared to cry.

Now my body simply folded into a C beneath her grip. My head fell back, and I remained completely still.

The members who had been complaining fell silent.

A few of the bolder ones began whispering. "What's wrong with Miss Sophie? Donna Freeman hit her so hard. She should have started crying by now."

"If she'd hit me like that, I would've gone flying. Miss Sophie doesn't look as if she's pretending."

"Look at her face. She's deathly pale. Could something be wrong with her?"

As Mom listened, the anger drained from her eyes. She leaned closer to study my closed eyes, and a flicker of panic crossed her face.

She bent to listen for my heartbeat, but my sister ran over with the gun raised.

"Mom, I think Sophie's fine."

Her smile was innocent, her tone coaxing. "Look, her band has been flashing the whole time. She must think she can fool you if she stays quiet. She's faking all of this to escape the consequences."

The panic vanished from Mom's face. She dropped me like a piece of trash and smiled approvingly at my sister, Mimi Freeman.

"Good thing you warned me, Mimi. Otherwise, she really would have fooled me."

As she spoke, Mom kicked me in disgust. "What an embarrassment."

I stood beside them, staring at their faces. Even in death, my whole body went numb and my heart seemed to clench.

Mimi, my own sister, had lied!

The band was useless. I was dead, so how could it still be flashing? Mimi lied with every breath, yet hers did not react at all.

Lucas frowned, still uneasy. He approached Mom and lowered his voice. "Donna Freeman, I don't think Miss Sophie is pretending. Should we call the family doctor?"

"Why would we call a doctor? Do you want to parade this humiliation in front of outsiders?"

Mom rejected his suggestion without hesitation. "Her band has been flashing this entire time. Even if she isn't speaking, she's thinking about how to deceive me. This is her favorite trick. She's done it countless times.

"I won't fall for it. Neither will you."

"But..."

Lucas tried to continue, but Mom's cutting glare made him swallow the words. He lowered his head and stood silently to one side.

I still lay on the ground with my eyes closed. Mom glared at me, grabbed my hair, and dragged me away.

My body seemed boneless. She ripped out a fistful of hair, and my face scraped along the ground, leaving a reddish-brown smear. She did not care.

She dragged me all the way to the punishment room at the far edge of the estate, where the Family confined members who broke its rules.

Before pulling the door nearly shut, Mom's expression shifted. She stared down at me as if trying to see me clearly.

She had taken one step toward me when a gunshot rang out in the distance.

"Miss Mimi is an incredible shot!"

Mimi had killed the last condemned man, drawing Mom's attention away from me.

"If you want to play dead, stay in here. Look at your sister. She's better than you in every way."

Mom pulled the door nearly shut and went to Mimi, who lifted her chin proudly as she waited for praise.

Before leaving, Mimi glanced back at the punishment room. She stroked the band on her wrist, which had never once flashed, and a sly look entered her eyes.

Dad originally intended to throw Mom out, but Lucas stopped him.If their enemies learned what had happened inside the Family, they could exploit it and bring disaster upon the Freeman Family. Then Mom lost her mind, so Dad committed her to a psychiatric hospital. There, she wandered from ward to ward with tangled hair and filthy clothes.Whenever she saw a machine, she pressed herself against it."It's advanced technology. The light is on. Ha, ha... Liars. They're all liars..."Then she spun happily into another ward.Several doctors watched her go and sighed."I doubt she'll ever recover.""She deserves it. What kind of mother treats her own child that way?"Lucas had intended to keep the incident secret. But my death was too serious to conceal. Word spread quickly, and before long, almost everyone knew Mom had killed me.Mom seemed to hear the doctors. She whipped around and glared at them. Then her mouth split into a huge smile."Heh, heh... Sophie... Mom knows you're sick. I know

Dad looked at her as coldly as if she were already dead."I was grateful that you married me when I had nothing. For years, I trusted and respected you enough to hand over the Family's affairs and finances. You used that power to kill my daughter."Mom sobbed and screamed, "It wasn't me. This isn't my fault. Mimi lied to me. It's all her fault!"If she hadn't kept telling me Sophie was lying, why would I have ignored her? Mimi deceived me!"Mimi lay on the floor, sobbing until she could barely breathe. "How is this my fault? I could only deceive you because you chose to believe me. You're the one who trusted technology instead of Sophie. If you'd taken her to a doctor even once, none of this would have happened!"Dad picked up the discarded band and tore it apart. There was almost nothing inside: one circuit board, a few wires, and nothing else."This piece of garbage cost my daughter her life."He leaned helplessly against the wall and glared at Mom. "I don't oppose technology. It can

Lucas moved quickly. He had the band examined, and the results soon arrived. When Dad read the report, he hurled his glass aside, stormed into the punishment room, and threw the report and the band at Mom's face."This is the high-tech device you paid so much for? Read the report and see what it really is!"Mom picked up the report with a vacant stare. One glance made her scream and fling it away before collapsing. The report clearly identified the device as a simple temperature sensor. Its cheap circuit board was less sophisticated than the one inside an ordinary air-conditioner remote. My chronic illness kept my body temperature below normal. The band detected the lower temperature and flashed continuously. That was also why it kept flashing after I died. A corpse was colder still.Mimi's remained dark because her temperature was normal and sometimes rose even higher when she was active. The device had been a toy from the beginning. It had nothing to do with detecting lies.Mom had b

"Look at these. I had these high-tech lie-detector bands custom-made for my daughters. Whether they lie aloud or merely think about lying, the bands flash red. Sophie's has been flashing this whole time. Mimi's hasn't!"Mimi nodded obediently, her face still innocent. "Yes. Sophie must have been thinking about how to deceive Mom. Look, my band is dark. I'm the honest one."Everyone exchanged glances, struck by the absurdity of her claim.Frowning, Lucas gently removed the band from my wrist. It continued flashing after he took it off.He curled his lip, put the band on his own wrist, then raised it toward Mom and Mimi. "I'm a woman."The band kept flashing.Lucas looked Mom in the eye. "I'm a man."The band kept flashing.Mom watched the entire demonstration, her face turning ashen.Lucas gave a bitter laugh. "This is the high-tech device you paid a fortune for, Donna Freeman? It can't distinguish between two statements that obvious. It's nothing but useless plastic!"Mom stared at the

My eyes were closed and my lips pressed into a hard line. Abrasions had left half my face unrecognizable; the other half had turned blue-white.Dense patches of lividity spread from my neck. My body had already begun to decay and leak thick, foul-smelling fluid. The agony of my death had twisted what remained of my face into a ghastly expression. The brutal sight stunned everyone."My God!"The Family members had witnessed countless bloody scenes, yet none of them could bear to look at my body.Only two days earlier, I had been alive, the privileged princess of the Freeman Family. Now I was a rotting corpse, barely recognizable."How could this happen!"Lucas stumbled back. Disbelief drew him forward again, but he could not bear the sight. He froze in place. After a moment, he turned to Mom."Donna Freeman, Miss Sophie is dead! I warned you not to do this, but you swore nothing would happen. Now she's dead! How are we supposed to explain this to the Don?"Mom stared at my face, trembli

Dad woke early. His first stop was my bedroom, but I was not there. He shook Mom awake. "I barely slept. I kept having nightmares, and Sophie still isn't home!"Mom rolled over comfortably without opening her eyes."Of course she isn't. She's trying to worry me into looking for her, but I won't fall for it."Dad disagreed. He threw on a coat and ran toward the punishment room.I hurried after him, hoping he would find my body before it rotted inside. When he arrived, however, he found the door locked tight, and he did not have the key.Mom had commissioned the reinforced door to prevent punished Family members from escaping. Ordinary force could not open it.Dad returned home to question her. Mom calmly sipped her coffee, looking as if this proved exactly what she had expected."She probably ran away and locked the door to fool us. That shameless girl still refuses to repent!"Pain pierced my heart like a needle.Mom, even now you still think I'm deceiving you. Am I really so despicabl
