Chapter 2

Author: Ginger
Once the execution ended, only the cleanup remained. Mom took Mimi home.

Dad came out of the kitchen after making dinner and looked behind them. "Where's Sophie?"

Mom yanked off her boots and tossed them aside. "She lied to avoid the execution. When I caught her, she played dead, so I put her in the punishment room to reflect on what she'd done."

Dad clearly disapproved. "Couldn't you have talked to her? That room is for prisoners. She's still a child!"

He pulled off his apron and started toward the door, but Mom stopped him.

"I didn't lock it. She can leave whenever she wants. It's hot outside, so she won't last long in there. Don't worry."

Mimi wore the same innocent smile as she linked her arm through Dad's.

"Don't worry, Dad. The punishment room is isolated, but it isn't dangerous. Sophie humiliated Mom in front of all those people. Mom is only teaching Sophie a small lesson."

Dad shook his head. "I've felt uneasy all day. I can't shake the feeling that something is wrong."

Mom locked the front door and shot him an irritated look.

"You favor Sophie so much that she thinks she can lie without consequences. She's still afraid of mice at her age, all because you spoiled her. How could a child like that ever become our heir?

"You and I were the best in our respective families, yet we produced someone so useless that even our enemies know about it. Isn't that humiliating enough?"

Then Mom sat at the table and began cutting into her steak.

My father, Alexander Freeman, was a Don, but the Family he inherited had already declined. Marrying Mom was the only reason he escaped his enemies' pursuit.

That left him with little authority at home and no power to overturn her decisions.

I watched my lifeless body in the punishment room and burst into sobs.

In my memories, Mom had loved me.

As her first child, I had once received all her care and attention.

Then Mimi was born. As we grew older, Mom gradually withdrew her attention from me and gave it all to her.

Whenever Mimi accused me of bullying her and I denied it, Mom looked more disappointed in me. Then the two bands arrived.

Whenever I felt ill, mine flashed. Mimi would "honestly" report thoughts I had never had, and Mom would beat me.

The sight of blood made me faint, so I could not handle a gun. Mimi called it God's punishment for a liar, and Mom believed her completely.

She trusted technology, her own authority, and Mimi. I was the only one she refused to trust.

As my health worsened, I could no longer participate in Family business. Mimi claimed I was only being lazy because I did not want to learn.

Mom refused to take me to the hospital. She even forced me to watch violent, bloody movies, convinced they would cure me. By the end, I was frailer than a small child.

No matter how often I explained, protested, accused Mimi of framing me, or said the band was broken, Mom never believed me.

She only answered with the same cold words. "If Mimi is lying, why hasn't her band flashed even once? How can you still refuse to admit what you've done?"

I wanted the answer too. Why did Mimi's every word prove false while her band did nothing?

Eventually, I stopped defending myself.

I knew that no explanation could compete with my perpetually flashing band and Mimi's innocent smile. Mom would always believe them.

I thought that if I stopped defending myself, I might finally matter to her again.

I never imagined that even my silent death would fail to earn her trust.

As I wiped away my tears, I suddenly heard the lock click into place.

Uneasy, I searched the area but saw no one.

I drifted home. The house was dark, and everyone was asleep.

Who had locked the punishment-room door?

Dad originally intended to throw Mom out, but Lucas stopped him.If their enemies learned what had happened inside the Family, they could exploit it and bring disaster upon the Freeman Family. Then Mom lost her mind, so Dad committed her to a psychiatric hospital. There, she wandered from ward to ward with tangled hair and filthy clothes.Whenever she saw a machine, she pressed herself against it."It's advanced technology. The light is on. Ha, ha... Liars. They're all liars..."Then she spun happily into another ward.Several doctors watched her go and sighed."I doubt she'll ever recover.""She deserves it. What kind of mother treats her own child that way?"Lucas had intended to keep the incident secret. But my death was too serious to conceal. Word spread quickly, and before long, almost everyone knew Mom had killed me.Mom seemed to hear the doctors. She whipped around and glared at them. Then her mouth split into a huge smile."Heh, heh... Sophie... Mom knows you're sick. I know

Dad looked at her as coldly as if she were already dead."I was grateful that you married me when I had nothing. For years, I trusted and respected you enough to hand over the Family's affairs and finances. You used that power to kill my daughter."Mom sobbed and screamed, "It wasn't me. This isn't my fault. Mimi lied to me. It's all her fault!"If she hadn't kept telling me Sophie was lying, why would I have ignored her? Mimi deceived me!"Mimi lay on the floor, sobbing until she could barely breathe. "How is this my fault? I could only deceive you because you chose to believe me. You're the one who trusted technology instead of Sophie. If you'd taken her to a doctor even once, none of this would have happened!"Dad picked up the discarded band and tore it apart. There was almost nothing inside: one circuit board, a few wires, and nothing else."This piece of garbage cost my daughter her life."He leaned helplessly against the wall and glared at Mom. "I don't oppose technology. It can

Lucas moved quickly. He had the band examined, and the results soon arrived. When Dad read the report, he hurled his glass aside, stormed into the punishment room, and threw the report and the band at Mom's face."This is the high-tech device you paid so much for? Read the report and see what it really is!"Mom picked up the report with a vacant stare. One glance made her scream and fling it away before collapsing. The report clearly identified the device as a simple temperature sensor. Its cheap circuit board was less sophisticated than the one inside an ordinary air-conditioner remote. My chronic illness kept my body temperature below normal. The band detected the lower temperature and flashed continuously. That was also why it kept flashing after I died. A corpse was colder still.Mimi's remained dark because her temperature was normal and sometimes rose even higher when she was active. The device had been a toy from the beginning. It had nothing to do with detecting lies.Mom had b

"Look at these. I had these high-tech lie-detector bands custom-made for my daughters. Whether they lie aloud or merely think about lying, the bands flash red. Sophie's has been flashing this whole time. Mimi's hasn't!"Mimi nodded obediently, her face still innocent. "Yes. Sophie must have been thinking about how to deceive Mom. Look, my band is dark. I'm the honest one."Everyone exchanged glances, struck by the absurdity of her claim.Frowning, Lucas gently removed the band from my wrist. It continued flashing after he took it off.He curled his lip, put the band on his own wrist, then raised it toward Mom and Mimi. "I'm a woman."The band kept flashing.Lucas looked Mom in the eye. "I'm a man."The band kept flashing.Mom watched the entire demonstration, her face turning ashen.Lucas gave a bitter laugh. "This is the high-tech device you paid a fortune for, Donna Freeman? It can't distinguish between two statements that obvious. It's nothing but useless plastic!"Mom stared at the

My eyes were closed and my lips pressed into a hard line. Abrasions had left half my face unrecognizable; the other half had turned blue-white.Dense patches of lividity spread from my neck. My body had already begun to decay and leak thick, foul-smelling fluid. The agony of my death had twisted what remained of my face into a ghastly expression. The brutal sight stunned everyone."My God!"The Family members had witnessed countless bloody scenes, yet none of them could bear to look at my body.Only two days earlier, I had been alive, the privileged princess of the Freeman Family. Now I was a rotting corpse, barely recognizable."How could this happen!"Lucas stumbled back. Disbelief drew him forward again, but he could not bear the sight. He froze in place. After a moment, he turned to Mom."Donna Freeman, Miss Sophie is dead! I warned you not to do this, but you swore nothing would happen. Now she's dead! How are we supposed to explain this to the Don?"Mom stared at my face, trembli

Dad woke early. His first stop was my bedroom, but I was not there. He shook Mom awake. "I barely slept. I kept having nightmares, and Sophie still isn't home!"Mom rolled over comfortably without opening her eyes."Of course she isn't. She's trying to worry me into looking for her, but I won't fall for it."Dad disagreed. He threw on a coat and ran toward the punishment room.I hurried after him, hoping he would find my body before it rotted inside. When he arrived, however, he found the door locked tight, and he did not have the key.Mom had commissioned the reinforced door to prevent punished Family members from escaping. Ordinary force could not open it.Dad returned home to question her. Mom calmly sipped her coffee, looking as if this proved exactly what she had expected."She probably ran away and locked the door to fool us. That shameless girl still refuses to repent!"Pain pierced my heart like a needle.Mom, even now you still think I'm deceiving you. Am I really so despicabl
