Chapter 5

ผู้เขียน: Nameless
Scott's POV

Yolanda turned her anger on me again. "Scott, you went to all this trouble to get me there so I would feel guilty, didn't you? Keep dreaming. Even if you and Paul died right in front of me, I wouldn't even shed a tear!"

After she hung up, Dr. Whitmore sighed helplessly.

"Dr. Whitmore, just assume I don't have any parents," I said.

He didn't argue with me.

…

The next day, Dr. Whitmore scheduled my surgery.

Afterward, he told me, "Scott, once you recover, you'll walk normally again. But you can't do anything strenuous from now on."

I didn't feel sorry about it at all. Because for the first time, there was something in my body that didn't come from Yolanda.

Tomorrow would be the seventh day since Dad died, and I insisted on leaving the hospital despite Dr. Whitmore's objections.

Dad had already died with regrets. If I didn't lay him to rest properly, what kind of son would I be?

But when I came home in my wheelchair, I noticed that the front door wasn't fully closed.

A bad feeling hit me.

I rushed inside in my wheelchair and found the whole place in a mess. It looked like someone had broken in.

Worst of all, the urn I had left on the table was gone.

In a panic, I searched every corner of the house, but it was nowhere to be found.

If a thief had broken in, why would they leave the cash in the nightstand untouched and steal Dad's ashes instead? Wouldn't a thief want nothing to do with something like that?

Unless it was someone who hated Dad.

Dad had always been gentle and never made enemies. So, that left only one possibility.

Having failed to find the evidence they wanted, they had taken their anger out on Dad's ashes instead. After all, they hated the two of us.

I went downstairs and searched through the trash, hoping against hope that I would find it.

At the bottom of one of the dumpsters, I finally spotted a familiar box.

But it was empty.

Fine as dust, Dad's ashes were scattered across the ground and garbage bags, mixed in with scraps of food. No matter how carefully I gathered them, I knew I could never recover all of them.

I clenched my fists as rage filled me.

Yolanda could doubt me and investigate me, but how could she be so cruel to the only family I had left?

And even in his final moments, Dad still couldn't stop worrying about her.

If her family wouldn't let us live in peace, then I'd make their lives hell, too.

I took Dad's ashes to the biggest media outlet in town.

"I want to report Carson Group's chairwoman, Yolanda Quinn, for abusing her position," I said. "She used her influence to get Winston Zeller into the most advanced class at the city's top high school, despite his failing grades.

"She also cheated on her husband and abandoned her family. Then, she moved in with her lover, Karl Zeller!"

After going public with my accusations against Yolanda, I took Dad's ashes to the police headquarters.

"I want to report a crime," I said. "Carson Group's chairwoman, Yolanda Quinn, hired someone to take the SAT for Winston Zeller. He's a senior at the city's top high school.

"She also hired kidnappers to abduct me and beat me so badly that I was left with a permanent leg injury!"

Scott's POVWinston kicked the door like a madman, determined to break it down and kill me.Suddenly, an alarm went off downstairs.Winston was still young, and the sound sent him into a panic. He fled down the fire stairs. The same day, two videos spread across social media. The first showed a teenager riding a motorcycle. He crashed through a guardrail by the river and fell into the water. When they fished him out, he was already dead. The teenager was believed to have been Winston Zeller, the student at the center of the cheating scandal in Jeston. The second showed a middle-aged man rushing to the river and breaking down in tears. Moments later, he plunged a knife into his own chest and died despite emergency treatment.Under intense public pressure, the police quickly solved the case using forensic methods. Someone else had indeed been sitting in Winston's seat during the SAT. The person who was paid to take the test on Winston's behalf was soon arrested. The investiga

Scott's POVPeople online started calling me their inspiration. Now that I had everyone's attention, I moved on to the next part of my plan.I exposed Winston online for hiring someone to take the SAT for him, with Yolanda, chairwoman of Carson Group, acting as his accomplice.I also posted his awful grades from all three years of high school. He barely passed most of his classes. The story quickly sparked public outrage, especially among high school seniors and their parents."Sure, regular grades aren't everything. But with scores like that, suddenly coming out on top of the SAT is an insult to all the kids who actually worked for it!""Exactly. There are geniuses in this world, but I don't believe anyone can suddenly become one on one of the biggest tests of their life!""As they say, if you have done nothing wrong, you have nothing to hide. The truth will always prevail!""The fact that this kid had to speak out online proves the local authorities can't be trusted. This ne

Scott's POV"Karl specifically asked me to bring you home so we can all take care of you for a while," Yolanda said. "He also said you and Winston got into the same college, so when school starts, we'll take you both there together!"Her smile faded when I continued to ignore her. She put on a pitiful expression. "Scott, please. Give me a chance to make things right, okay?"Watching her act so helpless, I knew she had an ulterior motive. After all, even when she was living with us before, she rarely ever humbled herself. No matter who was right or wrong, Dad and I always had to apologize, placate her, and do whatever it took to make her happy.Poor Dad had given all his love to a woman who never deserved it."Ms. Quinn, don't waste your tears," I said. "I'm not Karl, so I won't fall for them."Yolanda tried to argue. "Scott, you just hate me because I left you and Paul. But all I did was pursue my own happiness. What's wrong with that?"Karl was only protecting me from getting

Scott's POV"Open your eyes and take a good look. My father, Paul Carson, died eight days ago," I said. "It was on the very same day I called you."I'm here today to take care of the paperwork for his death. If you still don't believe me, ask the officers to check the records."Yolanda looked at me in disbelief. "Karl told me you and Paul were just trying to get me to feel sorry for you. He saw Paul getting you discharged from the hospital.""Is that so? Then, how do you explain him throwing Dad's urn into the trash?" I asked."Impossible! Karl would never do something like that," Yolanda said."Do you want to see the security footage? It's crystal clear. You can see that shameless bastard Karl in every frame!" I said.Yolanda turned to the police. "Officer, is Paul really dead?""According to these documents, there's no doubt about it," the officer replied.Yolanda stood there in a daze for a moment, then crouched in front of me. "Scott, how have you managed all these days by

Scott's POVKarl rushed over and pounded on the door. "Scott, don't make up lies about us! I was at the hospital yesterday, and I saw Paul getting you discharged and taking you home in a wheelchair.""If you're seeing dead people, I guess your time is almost up too," I retorted.Yolanda started to say something else, but I backed my wheelchair away and slammed the inner door shut in their faces.I could practically picture Yolanda's face turning beet red with rage as she cursed and pounded on the door nonstop. But a few security guards soon showed up and kicked them out.A neighbor in the homeowners' group chat wrote, "Those two have no decency!"I liked a few comments and replied, "And she calls herself a chairwoman. She has absolutely no class!"…Dad didn't smoke or drink. His only hobby was watching soccer.Tonight was the Erolean Championship final. I turned on the TV so Dad and I could watch one last soccer game together. His voice echoed in my head."Scott, the goal

Scott's POVThat evening, someone pounded on my front door.I opened the inner door and faced Yolanda and Karl through the locked security screen door.Yolanda got the first word in. "Scott, how dare you go to the media to expose me and file a police report against me?"You ingrate! Have you learned nothing after all these years? If I hadn't given birth to you and raised you, you wouldn't even be here!"She didn't stop there. "Students from that high school are either street thugs or kids who barely scrape through and end up working odd jobs. "And you expect me to believe you got into Havorton University? Anyone would be suspicious! I was just checking into you before I ended up taking the blame for everything just because I'm your mother!"I laughed. "So you know that school is terrible too, Yolanda?"You used your status as my mother to force me out of the city's top high school and into that dump. You did it because you hated Dad and me."You just wanted to watch me, as Pa
