Chapter 4

ผู้เขียน: Nameless
Third-Person POV

"I'm Scott's mother. If he dares call the police, I'll break his other leg!" Yolanda hissed.

She rubbed her temples. Anything involving the Carsons always got under her skin.

Yolanda only wished that Paul and Scott would die in an accident someday so she could finally have some peace.

Karl noticed something was wrong and pulled Yolanda into his arms. He cooed softly in her ear, "Tell me, honey. Who made you so upset? I'll deal with them for you!"

His warm breath tickled Yolanda's ear, and her anger vanished.

She pouted. "It's those pathetic losers again. They keep making my life miserable.

"I've got some bad news for you. Those two idiots couldn't get anything out of Scott, so I told them to let him go."

Karl panicked. "How could you let Scott go? If he won't confess, beat him until he does! Or fake some evidence and make him sign the confession.

"What if Scott ends up in the same college as Winston? Winston is so gentle and harmless. Scott will bully him mercilessly."

Yolanda looked at him in surprise.

Karl quickly changed his story. "That's one reason. But mostly, I'm worried about you.

"Scott goes to that lousy school. It would be a miracle if anyone there got into college, let alone Harvorton University.

"Something that unbelievable is bound to attract attention. If they investigate and find anything, you'll be dragged into it too.

"Honey, you've worked so hard to become Carson Group's chairwoman. You can't let Scott ruin everything.

"That's why we need to get the evidence first. Then, you can expose Scott for cheating, despite being his mother. Everyone will praise you for doing the right thing."

Yolanda pouted. "But they've released him. What do we do now?"

"Forget it. I'll find another way to get the evidence," Karl replied.

Yolanda was deeply touched. "Honey, you're always looking out for me."

…

Scott's POV

The two abductors dumped me outside the hospital and warned me not to cause trouble. They even made sure to remind me that Yolanda was behind them.

When the security guard saw me crawling on the ground, he kindly found a wheelchair to take me to the orthopedic department.

The doctor, Barry Whitmore, studied my X-rays. "Scott, the bones in your knee are badly fractured, so you'll need knee replacement surgery. Where are your parents? Can you have them sign the consent form?"

"I'm afraid they can't come," I said. "My dad just passed away. Can I sign it myself?"

"No. You're not 18 years old yet, so we need your legal guardian's signature," Dr. Whitmore said.

Just then, Yolanda called and demanded, "Where's Paul? I've called him a dozen times, and he won't answer. Where the hell is he?"

"I told you two days ago that Dad was dying and didn't have much time left. He's gone now. Isn't that what you wanted?" I snapped.

"Scott, did Paul teach you to talk to me like that?" Yolanda sounded furious. "You? Getting into Havorton University? Who would believe that?

"I'll find out exactly how the two of you falsified your SAT scores. Then, I'll make sure you both pay for it!"

Dr. Whitmore was stunned. After a moment, he said, "Is this Scott's mother? Scott's knee is badly damaged and needs surgery. Can you come to the hospital?"

"Do I look like I have time for that?" Yolanda snapped. "And you've got the wrong person. I'm not his guardian."

Dr. Whitmore said, "But Scott just told me…"

"He said his father is dead, right?" Yolanda asked. "Doctor, let me tell you something. Those two are good-for-nothing and compulsive liars. Don't believe a word they say!"

  • My Mother's Last Words Killed My Dad   Chapter 11

Scott's POVWinston kicked the door like a madman, determined to break it down and kill me.Suddenly, an alarm went off downstairs.Winston was still young, and the sound sent him into a panic. He fled down the fire stairs. The same day, two videos spread across social media. The first showed a teenager riding a motorcycle. He crashed through a guardrail by the river and fell into the water. When they fished him out, he was already dead. The teenager was believed to have been Winston Zeller, the student at the center of the cheating scandal in Jeston. The second showed a middle-aged man rushing to the river and breaking down in tears. Moments later, he plunged a knife into his own chest and died despite emergency treatment.Under intense public pressure, the police quickly solved the case using forensic methods. Someone else had indeed been sitting in Winston's seat during the SAT. The person who was paid to take the test on Winston's behalf was soon arrested. The investiga

  • My Mother's Last Words Killed My Dad   Chapter 10

Scott's POVPeople online started calling me their inspiration. Now that I had everyone's attention, I moved on to the next part of my plan.I exposed Winston online for hiring someone to take the SAT for him, with Yolanda, chairwoman of Carson Group, acting as his accomplice.I also posted his awful grades from all three years of high school. He barely passed most of his classes. The story quickly sparked public outrage, especially among high school seniors and their parents."Sure, regular grades aren't everything. But with scores like that, suddenly coming out on top of the SAT is an insult to all the kids who actually worked for it!""Exactly. There are geniuses in this world, but I don't believe anyone can suddenly become one on one of the biggest tests of their life!""As they say, if you have done nothing wrong, you have nothing to hide. The truth will always prevail!""The fact that this kid had to speak out online proves the local authorities can't be trusted. This ne

Scott's POV"Karl specifically asked me to bring you home so we can all take care of you for a while," Yolanda said. "He also said you and Winston got into the same college, so when school starts, we'll take you both there together!"Her smile faded when I continued to ignore her. She put on a pitiful expression. "Scott, please. Give me a chance to make things right, okay?"Watching her act so helpless, I knew she had an ulterior motive. After all, even when she was living with us before, she rarely ever humbled herself. No matter who was right or wrong, Dad and I always had to apologize, placate her, and do whatever it took to make her happy.Poor Dad had given all his love to a woman who never deserved it."Ms. Quinn, don't waste your tears," I said. "I'm not Karl, so I won't fall for them."Yolanda tried to argue. "Scott, you just hate me because I left you and Paul. But all I did was pursue my own happiness. What's wrong with that?"Karl was only protecting me from getting

  • My Mother's Last Words Killed My Dad   Chapter 8

Scott's POV"Open your eyes and take a good look. My father, Paul Carson, died eight days ago," I said. "It was on the very same day I called you."I'm here today to take care of the paperwork for his death. If you still don't believe me, ask the officers to check the records."Yolanda looked at me in disbelief. "Karl told me you and Paul were just trying to get me to feel sorry for you. He saw Paul getting you discharged from the hospital.""Is that so? Then, how do you explain him throwing Dad's urn into the trash?" I asked."Impossible! Karl would never do something like that," Yolanda said."Do you want to see the security footage? It's crystal clear. You can see that shameless bastard Karl in every frame!" I said.Yolanda turned to the police. "Officer, is Paul really dead?""According to these documents, there's no doubt about it," the officer replied.Yolanda stood there in a daze for a moment, then crouched in front of me. "Scott, how have you managed all these days by

Scott's POVKarl rushed over and pounded on the door. "Scott, don't make up lies about us! I was at the hospital yesterday, and I saw Paul getting you discharged and taking you home in a wheelchair.""If you're seeing dead people, I guess your time is almost up too," I retorted.Yolanda started to say something else, but I backed my wheelchair away and slammed the inner door shut in their faces.I could practically picture Yolanda's face turning beet red with rage as she cursed and pounded on the door nonstop. But a few security guards soon showed up and kicked them out.A neighbor in the homeowners' group chat wrote, "Those two have no decency!"I liked a few comments and replied, "And she calls herself a chairwoman. She has absolutely no class!"…Dad didn't smoke or drink. His only hobby was watching soccer.Tonight was the Erolean Championship final. I turned on the TV so Dad and I could watch one last soccer game together. His voice echoed in my head."Scott, the goal

  • My Mother's Last Words Killed My Dad   Chapter 6

Scott's POVThat evening, someone pounded on my front door.I opened the inner door and faced Yolanda and Karl through the locked security screen door.Yolanda got the first word in. "Scott, how dare you go to the media to expose me and file a police report against me?"You ingrate! Have you learned nothing after all these years? If I hadn't given birth to you and raised you, you wouldn't even be here!"She didn't stop there. "Students from that high school are either street thugs or kids who barely scrape through and end up working odd jobs. "And you expect me to believe you got into Havorton University? Anyone would be suspicious! I was just checking into you before I ended up taking the blame for everything just because I'm your mother!"I laughed. "So you know that school is terrible too, Yolanda?"You used your status as my mother to force me out of the city's top high school and into that dump. You did it because you hated Dad and me."You just wanted to watch me, as Pa
