“Joncil,” Lucien whispers, his eyes still on me. “You are dismissed.”

“Yes, sir,” Joncil says and scurries off.

I wait for his footsteps to disappear before looking back up at Lucien. His hand is still wrapped around my wrist, and he is standing too close for comfort. Especially with just the two of us. I start wondering where Vivian and the kids are but I don’t ask.

“Where were you, Layla?” Lucien asks again.

I bite my lip to keep myself from saying something snaky. His eyes drop to my m

Vivian’s voice barely registers over the ringing in my ears. I’m still gripping the railing, breathing hard as the pain slowly starts to fade. My arms are trembling, and I can barely feel my legs beneath me.“I didn’t do anything,” I manage to say.Vivian is completely speechless as she keeps staring at me. She doesn’t make a move to come down. I assume it’s because of the cracks in the stairs, but it could just be that she is afraid of me.Footsteps suddenly come from the front door. I turn toward the sound just as Lucien walks inside with Joncil behind him.My eyes immediately go to Lucien. His shirt is torn again, and there’s blood on his arm, but he doesn’t look injured. Then I see what Joncil has strapped over his shoulder. My mouth falls open. “Elijah.”He’s unconscious and completely naked except for the blood covering part of his back.“How many times did you shoot him?” I rush toward them.“Twice,” Lucien answers.Joncil lowers Elijah onto the couch and pulls the couch cover

“We’re not even sure whether she will become a Waywood witch,” Vivian looks back at me. “I think you just have the blood.”A Waywood witch? I’ve read about them in history books. They were the most powerful witches because they channelled dark magic. And they created the vampires. Their goal was to create fully dead humans, so that humans would never have to fall sick or die. Instead, their spell created half dead, blood sucking vampires. Like Lucien. The very same vampires are the reason they are extinct. Talk about feeding a dog and it bites you.“Then why does the blood matter without the magic?” I ask. “Why am I beacon even though I’m clearly human.”I’ve never had magic in my life. I’ve never done anything strange. So that is definitely out of the question. “It matters,” Vivian answers, looking at me like I just asked a stupid question. “It’s a scent th—”She gets cut off when Lucien suddenly jumps to his feet. His jaw hardens as his face turns to look at the door. Vivian

Elijah’s POVMy wolf has been restless all night and morning. Every time I manage to close my eyes, he started pacing again. It’s getting fucking annoying. At this point I can tear anything to pieces. He’s right under my skin and refuses to get reeled in.I know exactly what he wants, especially because tonight is the full moon. He kept chanting mate, mate, mate, while doing that damn pacing last night. I haven’t seen Layla since she came to my office last time, but she’s all I can think this morning. She’s all we can think about.A knock on my bedroom door breaks into my thoughts. I quickly get off the bed and throw on a T-shirt that was already lying on the floor next to a pair of panties. These damn women never listen. I specifically told her not to leave a trace of herself behind. Now tell me why there were red panties on my floor?I pull the door open. Ryan, my beta, best friend, and business partner, is standing there with a huge grin.“What?” I ask.“They are ready for t

“Yes, Layla,” Vivian answers, moving away from the window.Nothing about what she just said seems to be making her uncomfortable. In fact, she looks very calm and composed for someone who just told her nineteen years old daughter, whose father just died, to go fend for herself. “Where did dad get the moonleaf he had?” I ask, taking a step back so she wouldn’t get too close. Mostly because I might just slap her out of the anger that was slowly building inside me.Anger reserved especially for her over the years for every fucking birthday she missed.“He never told me.” She stops walking and tilts her head to the side, searching my face. For what, I don’t know, but I know that I’m never going to be shedding tears over her ever again in this life. I’m getting this urge to want to hurt her in the worst way possible.“I’ve found an apartment for you outside the city. Of course I’ll help financially but —”“There are wolves outside the gate.” I cut her off. “Do you not understand t

Another dog comes running behind the lady with the leash, who now looks horrified and is no longer shouting. She doesn’t see the second dog until it runs past her, it’s owner running after it.My heart feels like it’s in hot oil as the dog gets closer to the car. I jump from my seat to Joncil as the dog jumps and crashes against the window. They’re hurting themselves against the car and I don’t understand why.“Are we going in or what?” Asher sighs, looking annoyed.“Fuck.” Joncil mutters and pushes me back into my seat as the dogs owners get close to their hurt dogs.“Fasten your seatbelt please,” Joncil orders and starts the car. “What about the kids?” I ask. “And I have to get to work.”“You aren’t going to work,” he says as he turns the car around and drives off.“What was that?” I demand, glancing at the twins before glaring back at Joncil. “Unlike werewolves—” he doesn’t look at me as he starts pressing his phone on the dashboard with his free hand. “Their system is to

Rosa is standing there like she’s seen a ghost. Lucien doesn’t move so I try to push him. He doesn’t even budge. “Lucien,” I whisper. “Let me go.”Lucien’s hands finally slip away and I stumble back.“Why?” Rosa asks, folding her arms. “I was just getting some water.”I’m just glad it’s not Vivian. What the hell is wrong with me?“Sorry.” I say, looking at my shoes. “Girl, please.” She giggles and walks off. Like it’s just another Tuesday. I wait until her footsteps disappear before turning to Lucien. He’s still watching me, and I really don’t trust myself to stand there with him after what just happened.“I’m going to bed,” I mutter. He doesn’t stop me.I make it to my room and shut the door behind me, leaning against it for a few seconds. My heart is still hammering so fast, and I can still feel his mouth on mine. I press my fingers to my lips and immediately drop my hand like it was burned.Nope. I’m not doing that.I change into my nightclothes and climb into bed, b
