Chapter 7

Penulis: Anonymous
The next morning, I arrived at the cemetery to say goodbye to Alex.

At the entrance, I froze at the sight of a figure.

It was Blake dressed in a suit. He paced back and forth, his eyes scanning the horizon.

He spotted me and broke into a wide smile. "Honey, I've been waiting forever. You're late."

I stepped back. "What are you doing here?"

His smile faltered, my rejection stinging. "You're leaving for a year. So, I figured you'd come and say goodbye to Alex."

"Don't pretend you know me," I snorted.

He reached for my suitcase, eager to please. "Let me carry it for you."

I yanked it back, clutching it tightly. "Save it. I don't need help from strangers."

My words hit him like a punch, his eyes welling up with tears.

"Am I really just a stranger to you now?" he croaked.

Before I could answer, his phone rang. He glanced at the screen, panic flickering across his face, and moved to reject it.

I stopped him. "Answer it. I don't care."

  • My Mourning, His Celebration   Chapter 9

Five years later, I returned to my hometown as a celebrated entrepreneur, surrounded by industry titans eager for my attention.Amid their chatter, I saw my old love.Blake had been reduced to a mall clerk. His face was etched with the weariness of a hard life. The charm that once defined him was gone, replaced by a tired, defeated slump.I'd supported him back then, pulling strings to get him a comfortable job. After we split, his life unraveled, leaving him to scrape by on his own.His eyes lit up when he spotted me. He quickly wiped his hands on his clothes and rushed to my side."Kate, you're back," he stammered excitedly. "Did you miss me? I knew you couldn't forget me."The crowd around us perked up, sensing gossip.I gave a wry smile. "I'm just here for business. Where is Megan? Not with you?"He flinched, clutching his head. "Don't mention her. She is a liar and a cheater. After we broke up, I was so broken that I dated her. That was the worst mistake of my life. She dr

The Northwest was a whirlwind of intensity and purpose. The program was cutthroat, filled with the sharpest minds. To stay, I had to be relentless. My days blurred into a cycle of training, note-taking, and late-night studying. I even cut back on my meal time, skipping them unless my stomach screamed in protest. The grind paid off.I secured a permanent spot and earned a rare chance to study under top researchers.Blake, meanwhile, never stopped trying to claw his way back. My phone buzzed with his messages, mostly mundane updates about his day and pathetic attempts to rekindle old memories.I deleted them all, not dignifying them with a single reply. When the program ended, I returned to headquarters with a promotion and a raise. As I stepped out of the building, Blake stood there, gaunt and hollow. His once-confident frame looked fragile. His face lit up with a smile as he rushed up to me. "I heard about your promotion. Congratulations!"I'd heard those words all day; they

Arriving home, I pushed open the door, bone-tired from the day, only to find Blake sprawled on the couch. He scrambled to hide his phone, plastering on a fake smile. "Hey, you're back. There is good news. Michael is doing much better, and they're heading back to the countryside tomorrow."I nodded, barely listening, set the engagement ring on the coffee table and said, "Start moving your stuff out. We're done. It's not right to live together anymore."His smile stiffened. He lunged for the ring, clutching it to his chest like a lifeline."I said I'm not breaking up," he cried, his voice cracking. "I messed up, and I'm sorry. Can't you forgive me just this once?"His eyes brimmed with sadness, his fingers tugging at my sleeve.I blinked, caught off guard. In all our years, he'd never apologized. In his mind, every choice he made was for us, and I had no right to question him.Once, that apology would've melted me and pulled me back into his orbit. Now it was too late.I'd pour

The next morning, I strode into my boss's office and proposed a decision. "I'm signing up for the Western Program. I'll go to the Northwest."His eyebrows shot up. Then a grin slowly spread across his face. "Good call! Do your best, and you will be promoted when you come back."I nodded, silent.Months ago, I'd turned down this same offer without hesitation because I couldn't bear to leave Blake or abandon my sick dad.The mission would go on for a whole year. Blake couldn't handle everything alone. Now it was a different story. Alex was gone, and my last anchor cut loose.Even if there was no promotion waiting, I'd still go for it.This city, once alive with memories of Blake and me, was now mocking me. I was desperate for an escape. And truthfully, I'd sacrificed too much for Blake already, passing up promotions to keep him happy and keep us stable. This time, I was living for myself.Blake's feelings no longer mattered to me. We were strangers now."With your skills and t

Blake didn't crumble as I'd expected. Instead, his face twisted into a mask of fury."What are you talking about?" he roared, his veins bulging in his neck. "I'm not breaking up. So, I missed Alex's funeral. What's the big deal? You're blowing this out of proportion. I'm here now, aren't I? What else do you want?"His rage was a storm, but I stood calmly in his eyes."If your daughter's fiancé ran off to marry someone else on your funeral day, could you forgive him?" I asked sharply. "You're the one living in a fantasy, thinking you can waltz back into my life after this.""So, you're ending us over this?" He staggered back, his face draining of color.I didn't even bat an eyelid.Even without Megan, our love had been dying for years. His heart had wandered long ago, and I was tired of chasing a ghost.I turned to leave, but he grabbed my wrist once again. He stammered, "It's not what you think. I just felt sorry for Megan."His excuse was pathetic, a recycled line he'd fed me
