Chapter 9 The first day is the worst day

(The first day is always the worst day)

Grayson knew he was in for a long ride when he spotted Kathleen standing right in front of the door with a cup of coffee ready for him. She was even more beautiful than the last time he saw her, her pencil skirt accentuated her curves and the green blouse with a little flower by the side just made his mouth water—the winning part was her hair, long, lustrous, shimmering and he knew she came from a line with good genes.

With a hard lump formed in his throat he walks towards her and the plastered smile on her face threw him off guard for a moment, ignoring her greeting, ‘Where's my coffee??'.

‘With no cream and two cubes of sugar as you requested sir'. She responded still with a smile which he was starting to find annoying. Honestly she didn't seem to be as shocked as she was two days before—a part of him found her determination impressive.

His brows morphed into a frown as he took a sip, then it changed into a scowl, ‘Follow me into my office Miss Turner'.

Oh God what have I done wrong now? Kathleen asked herself as she walked behind him into the office. He took a sit and grabbed a waste bin right under the desk and spilled the contents of the coffee right inside it which made her heart sink.

She followed his clear instructions to a good morning coffee which was on her table—black, no cream with two cubes of sugar which she found very depressing....his choice of beverage was as miserable as working with him was and now she was in deep trouble.

‘You don't like your coffee sir??'.

‘Was it store bought??'

‘I beg your pardon??'

‘Answer the question Kathleen....was it store bought'.

Now she was done for, she gulped hard and answered, ‘Well I didn't think you would mind it and I followed the recommendations from some of the other staffs sir...I went to the best coffee shop right across the street sir'.

‘In my office you don't think Kathleen. You do as you're told!!'

‘Well I thought it would be—'

‘You don't think. You do as you're told!!', he yelled and she could feel her insides squirming with embarrassment, ‘I only expect to drink coffee refined from the beautiful seeds imported from Guatemala, with two cubes of sugar and nothing else!! I didn't leave that part out for nothing. The coffee machine is right down the fifth floor at the employee's lounge!!'.

Now it finally clicked, why there was a direction notice stapled on the note left on her table, her cheeks burned and she wished she could jump off a cliff at the moment—but she smiled, she'd been through worse and this was just a little hassle, ‘Do you want me to re-make your coffee sir??'.

‘Yes', he frowned looking at his watch, ‘You have ten minutes to make me a good cup of coffee and get Miss James's report about the expansion in China'.

‘Okay sir'. She nodded and turned around but then he called her again, ‘Is there anything else sir?'. she asked.

‘Yes', he replied, ‘Wipe that stupid smile off your face'.

*********

‘First day of work huh??'. Ophelia James, a beautiful melanated woman with the height of an average highschooler and the mist beautiful black curls Kathleen had ever seen, placed a couple of files on the trolley she brought into her cubicle said after flashing her a wonderful grin.

Kathleen already liked her, ‘Yeah...feel like I'm drowning'.

‘The first day is always the worst day', Ophelia laughed, ‘I'm Ophelia by the way'.

‘Kathleen....Kathleen Turner but I like to go by Kathy or just Kat'. Kathleen responded.

‘Okay Kathleen. Don't sweat it okay?? I've had my share of Mr Hunter's yelling....it's one of the perks of working with a white rich boy you see, just pray you last longer than Tasha'. She muttered, rounding up her filework and handing it over to Kathleen.

With a few minutes to spare and her inquisitive nature, Kathleen couldn't help but ask, ‘Who's Tasha??'.

‘Ohh she's the last assistant who worked for Mr Hunter, was fired out of the blue so she filed for wrongful termination and sued him for a million dollars, but Mr Hunter won the case—it's his motto basically.....he never loses'.

Ophelia's story made Grayson Hunter more terrible in the eyes of Kathleen, she could feel her heart trembling as she left and made her way towards his office. What if she also gets fired like Tasha? what if she loses this opportunity of a life time to turn her life around and be thrown into the streets by Mr Garrison?.

Her hands started to fidget as she finally got to his office and knocked on the glass door, she heard him yelling over the phone and that sealed the terror she had in her heart.

‘Come in!'. Grayson yelled and she could hear the thumping inside of her as she pushed the trolley into his office.

‘Here are the reports you asked for sir and also a Mr Ashton's work since he called in sick today', she placed the files on the table and picked up his coffee, ‘Here's also your coffee sir'.

His brows arched as he picked up the mug and there was dead silence in the room, he took a deep breath and walked brought out the trash can again, spilling the contents right into it, ‘Can you tell me what's wrong with the coffee Miss Turner?'.

Oh God this is it, she thought as she scratched the back of her head in confusion, she did what he asked her to do—she made the coffee with the Guatemalan beans, two cups of sugar and even brewed it extra black so she wasn't sure where she went wrong, ‘I can't think of an answer sir'.

‘Well I can..', he slammed the mug right back on the trolley, ‘It's fucking cold Miss Turner!!'.

In a state of bewilderment, Kathleen blinked—she checked it properly before placing the mug on the table, it was perfect temperature and still had steam coming out of it so how in the world was it cold??. This was the worst day of her life and he was the worst human she'd ever worked for, totally different from the man she was attracted to at the club.

Being the woman that she was, strong-willed and not ready to back down she took a deep breath and smiled, ‘Would you like me to make you another one sir??'.
