Chapter 1

Chloe Zimmerman didn't reply.

But the translucent comments in front of me immediately blew up.

‘Holy crap! He picked Yara Henderson! Chloe must be freaking out right now!’

‘I'm dying. She was hoping he'd pick the least attractive girl in the photo, and instead he went straight for the heiress from one of the most powerful families in the city?’

‘Chloe seriously expects Yara to take her place? She wouldn't dare ask her in a million years!’

I picked up the black coffee on my desk and took a sip.

The bitterness slid down my throat.

Yara Henderson.

Her name kept appearing in the comments.

My gaze returned to the cropped photo on my phone.

The girl I'd chosen sat in the middle of a wide leather couch in a simple black dress.

She was effortlessly striking.

Even in a still photo, she seemed detached from everything around her, her eyes lowered as if none of it could hold her interest.

Then there was Chloe.

We'd met through an online game two years ago.

She was always checking in on me, staying up late to grind ranked matches together, and gifting me expensive in-game cosmetics.

Back then, I'd been sick and taking medication that caused my weight to shoot past two hundred pounds.

My confidence had hit rock bottom.

It was Chloe calling me “babe” and “baby” over voice chat night after night that pulled me back from the edge of depression.

We'd been dating online for two years.

She'd asked to meet in person countless times.

I'd always found some excuse to put it off.

Then, six months ago, I finally recovered.

I practically lived at the gym after that, dropping the excess weight and rebuilding my body until I barely looked like the same person.

I'd planned to surprise her.

Instead, she surprised me first.

I set down my coffee and scrolled through my contacts.

My last conversation with Ethan Peterson had been a month ago.

I'd sent him an old photo of myself from high school.

He was the mutual friend who had originally invited me to Chloe's gaming group.

And apparently, he was also the one who'd taken a photo of me at my lowest and turned it into entertainment for everyone else.

As if to confirm my suspicions, several new comments appeared.

‘Ethan is such a snake. He deliberately sent Chloe that old photo, then kept stirring the pot!’

‘Chloe almost threw up when she saw it. Then she immediately planned this huge meetup so she could humiliate him in front of everyone!’

‘They're meeting at Polaris tomorrow. Ethan even bought this huge, ugly ripped-up coat and plans to make him wear it in front of the whole crowd!’

I stared at the blue words floating in midair.

Then I picked up the box cutter on the desk.

The blade pressed against the stem of a dried rose.

Slice.

The brittle flower fell apart, scattering petals across the desk.

Two years of an online relationship.

And apparently, the whole thing had been nothing more than a cheap joke built on lies.

I searched for Polaris and pulled up its location.

Just then, my phone started vibrating.

A voice message from Chloe.

“Babe, tomorrow night at eight. I booked out Polaris for us.

“I've planned a very special first meeting, so make sure you look your best.”

Another message came through immediately.

“Babe, I've invited all my friends too. You're not going to chicken out at the last second and embarrass me, are you?”

My fingers moved quickly across the screen.

“Of course not. I'll be there right on time!”

I hit send, tossed my phone onto the couch, and walked into my closet.

I slid open the wardrobe doors.

Rows of fitted shirts, jackets, and polished shoes lined the shelves.

My gaze settled on a black dress shirt.

I pulled it out and held it against myself.

The fabric stretched neatly across my broad shoulders before tapering down toward my lean waist.

The man staring back at me from the mirror had a sharp jawline, deep-set eyes, and features that bore almost no resemblance to the overweight teenager in that old photo.

That oversized ugly coat?

Ethan could wear it himself.

Half an hour later, we walked into the top-floor conference room at Apex Capital.Chloe stood at the front in a business suit, confidently pitching to a room of executives.“Mr. Leedon, this project is practically guaranteed to turn a profit...”The conference room doors flew open.“Too bad she doesn't own the rights to it.”I walked in, my expression cold.Yara followed behind me with an entire legal team. The second Chloe saw me, all the color drained from her face.“Aiden? What are you doing here? Where's security?”I dropped a stack of certified documents onto the conference table.“The underlying technology, data, and system architecture for this proposal were registered under my name two years ago.”I looked directly at her.“Chloe, you really thought you could take my work and use it to bail out your sinking company?”Victor Leedon shot to his feet the moment he saw Yara.“Ms. Henderson, this is...”Yara pulled out a chair and sat down, leaning casually against th

After the gala, I sat on the couch in Yara's study while she worked through a stack of documents. My gaze drifted to a framed screenshot hanging on the wall.It was from a desperate siege battle in Realm of Gods two years ago.In the image, only my assassin and her mage were still standing, back-to-back, surrounded by fallen enemies.“You kept this all this time?”I couldn't hide my surprise.Yara signed the document in front of her and set down her pen.“That was one of the darkest times of my life.”She walked over and stopped beside me, her eyes settling on the screenshot.“Two years ago, my family was tearing itself apart.“My uncle set me up. I was badly injured in a car accident, and I nearly lost control of my shares in the company.”I stared at her.“At the time, I could barely move my fingers. Gaming was one of the only things that distracted me from everything else.”I froze. So that explained it.Back then, Smoke's controls would sometimes lag for no apparent

The ballroom erupted.Every head turned toward me.Some guests looked disgusted. Others looked openly entertained, as if they'd just been handed the night's best gossip.“Oh my God. Gold diggers really have no shame these days.”“Seriously. How did someone like that even get near the Henderson family?”I listened to them pile on.Instead of panicking, I calmly took a glass of red wine from a passing server's tray and sipped it.The floating comments were practically laughing themselves sick.‘Oh, this is hilarious. Chloe and Ethan actually think they've found some devastating dirt on him?’‘Do they have any idea that back then, one set of Aiden's in-game gear was worth more than what some people pay for a car?’“Are you done?”My cold voice cut through the ballroom. The crowd automatically parted.Yara emerged from the other side of the room with one hand in her pocket, her expression icy.She came straight to my side. One look from her was enough to make Chloe's knees s

Yara immediately sent me a party invite. The second the system announced that I was online, the global chat blew up.Chloe and her little crew started running their mouths in public chat.‘Well, look who crawled back. Isn't that Pumpkin, the fat guy who got kicked from the team? What happened? Your online girlfriend saw you in person and bailed, so now you're hiding in the game to feel important again?’Ethan jumped in too.‘Come on, Chloe. Don't be so harsh. Maybe Pumpkin finally found some next-level editing app that can work miracles.’The floating comments appeared.‘These two seriously didn't learn anything after last night. Now they're starting shit in the game too!’‘Please destroy them.’I gave a cold laugh and tightened my grip on the mouse.Yara's fingers flew across the keyboard. Then a server-wide announcement flashed across everyone's screen.‘Enough talking. Meet us in the open world.’Ten minutes later, the number-one assassin in Realm of Gods and the server

The night air cleared away the stale atmosphere from Polaris.Yara ushered me into the passenger seat of a black Maybach. The car pulled smoothly onto the main road.Inside, it was quiet except for the low hum of the engine.I leaned back in my seat, stealing glances at the woman behind the wheel.“I owe you one for tonight.”Yara eased onto the brake and brought the car to a smooth stop in the driveway of a sprawling house. She turned toward me, her dark eyes fixed on mine.“Aiden.”She said my name slowly.“I don't need favors.”“Then what do you want?”I eyed her warily.“I may have used you back there, but that doesn't mean you get to call the shots now.”Yara's hand paused on the door handle. Then she turned and braced one hand against the back of my seat, leaning toward me.She was close. But there wasn't a trace of arrogance in her eyes.If anything, there was something almost cautious in the way she looked at me.“Call the shots?”A quiet laugh escaped her.

The VIP section went so quiet you could've heard a pin drop.Chloe looked completely stunned. Her lips trembled as she looked from me to Yara.“Y-Yara, come on. Don't tell me you're serious. He's just some guy I met online...”Yara turned her head. Her cool gaze landed on Chloe.Chloe immediately shut her mouth.A new comment flashed across my vision.‘I'm dead. Chloe seriously has the nerve to argue with Yara? Her family's company is on the verge of collapse, and they're practically begging the Hendersons to invest and bail them out!’‘That's the whole reason Chloe begged Yara to come tonight. She's been desperate to get on her good side.’I glanced at the mess on the floor and smiled.Yara looked at Chloe, her voice flat.“You seriously thought this was okay?”Cold sweat broke out across Chloe's forehead. Her knees looked ready to give out.“It's a misunderstanding. I swear. I didn't know Aiden looked like this now. If I'd known, I would've...”“You would've what?”I
