Julian's POV

It was then that someone who was enjoying the spectacle joked, "Isn't this Bryan's ring size?"

"Oh, cut it out!" Bryan immediately shoved his hand into his pants pocket. His reaction only added fuel to the tension.

Then, someone immediately chimed in, "What are you hiding for? Is that really your size, Bryan?"

I stood there while everyone laughed, feeling cold all over.

Bryan walked over to me and patted me on the shoulder. "You shouldn't take it to heart, Julian. Naomi definitely didn't do it on purpose."

He sounded totally sincere, but there was a brief flash of triumph in his eyes. "She's always the one picking out my rings and watches for me, so she must have gotten them mixed up."

It turned out that they had already become this close. Naomi helped him with his rings, chose his watches, and even knew his finger size better than she knew mine.

Bryan glanced down at my hands again. "Your hands are so slender, Julian, so anything you put on looks as if it belongs to someone else."

He finished speaking and looked over my shirt. He sounded like he was just joking as he said, "It was the same when we bought underwear back then. You couldn't even fill out the smallest size, Julian."

I stood in place as laughter broke out across the room. My face burned with embarrassment.

Naomi just looked at Bryan helplessly. "You shouldn't pick on Julian anymore, Bryan."

She sounded like she was reprimanding him, but her eyes were brimming with indulgence.

It was then that someone rushed Naomi to cut the cake. "That's enough now! You've already proposed to him, so it's time for you to cut the cake, Naomi!"

I grabbed the cake knife and passed it to Naomi.

Bryan's phone suddenly chimed. He glanced down at it and instantly broke into a smile. "It's a video of Marshmallow, Naomi."

Naomi stopped what she was doing, then went to take a look. "Show it to me."

Bryan held the phone out to her, and in the video, a chubby kitten was pouncing on a toy ball.

They were standing shoulder-to-shoulder. They were standing so close to each other that it looked as though no one else could ever fit between them.

I stood in front of the cake, feeling like a complete third wheel.

Naomi finally got around to cutting the cake after some time. She took the knife from me, cut the first slice, and naturally handed the plate to Bryan. "You hardly ate anything tonight, so have this first, Bryan."

Bryan froze for a second before smiling at me. "Is this really alright? Julian made this cake himself, so he should eat first."

Naomi didn't give it much thought and said, "He won't mind."

I suddenly didn't even have the energy to smile when I heard that. In recent years, Naomi had said that phrase to me more than anything else.

Bryan was working late, so she went to pick him up. She said, "Bryan is your best friend. You don't mind, do you?"

Bryan's project ran into a problem, so she stayed up all night helping him fix the proposal. She said, "I'm only doing this because he's your best friend. You don't mind, do you?"

Bryan said his kitten was sick, so she stayed over at his place to look after it. She said, "It's just a cat, Julian. You don't mind, do you?"

Naomi had never actually cared about how I felt about it.

Bryan took the cake and whispered, "I hope you're not upset over this, Julian. I'm honestly feeling a bit lightheaded today."

He even steadied himself against the edge of the table after saying that, as though he were worried that I wouldn't believe him.

Naomi immediately reached out to support him. "Why didn't you say anything earlier? You should have a seat first, Bryan."

She helped Bryan over to the couch and handed him the cake. She did it so naturally, like she had done it countless times.

She never asked if I was exhausted after standing the whole time, and she didn't even notice that I had been running around all day for this birthday party without eating a single thing.

I looked down at the ring sitting on my finger. It was so loose that it would slide down whenever I bent my finger even a little. It was just like this relationship. I had tried so hard to hold on so many times, but nothing I did could make it stay.

  • My Only Wish Is to Leave Her   Chapter 11

I didn't see Naomi again for many years. I heard she never got married and eventually sold the house. I also heard that every year when my birthday came around, she'd purchase a ring—the sizing was always right, and my initials were engraved on every single one. It was just that those rings always ended up locked in a drawer, never seeing the light of day.Bryan ended up leaving the city, too. He used to post on social media all the time, but after a while, he barely posted at all. Some said that he wasn't doing well, while others said that he had finally realized that being given something that was never yours would eventually come back to hurt you.I stopped paying attention to them since my own life was getting busier by the day. I was offered a long-term contract after the project ended. I had an office of my own and made new friends as well.During a company dinner, a colleague was ordering dessert when someone suddenly asked, "Do you have any dietary restrictions, Julian?"

  • My Only Wish Is to Leave Her   Chapter 10

Half a year later, Naomi showed up again.I had just finished a project launch event that day. I noticed that she was standing outside the venue. She was wearing a black coat and had lost a lot of weight. She was holding a bottle of scotch in one hand, and this time, she finally got the right one.She spotted me, her eyes instantly brightening. "J-Julian…"I stopped in my tracks and asked, "What brings you here?"Naomi handed me the bottle of scotch and replied hoarsely, "I know what you like now, Julian. You like iced tea, not chamomile tea. You don't like crowded places, but you always put up with them because of me and Bryan. You weren't incapable of getting angry. You just loved me too much to show it to me, Julian…"She spoke slowly, as if she were reciting an answer that was long overdue.I couldn't help but find it ridiculous as I listened. "What's the point of remembering these things now, Naomi?"Naomi's eyes gradually lost their brightness. "I know I'm too late, but I

I later found out from a mutual friend that once Bryan returned to the country, things completely blew up between him and Naomi. He even showed up at her company, claiming he had sacrificed his best friend for her and demanding she make it up to him.Naomi stood before the front desk receptionist and said flatly, "You and I were never a thing, Bryan. I was wrong for not setting proper boundaries before, but it won't happen again."Bryan threw the folder at her feet. "How could you say that we were never a thing, Naomi? Why didn't you say that when you spent the night with me? Why didn't you say it when you bought me the ring? Why didn't you say it when you pushed Julian away to protect me?"Their conversation was overheard by the people at the front desk and also the colleagues nearby. Those ambiguous interactions that they once covered up with jokes were finally laid bare by Bryan himself, and before long, it became known throughout their social circle.Bryan became a laughingstoc

  • My Only Wish Is to Leave Her   Chapter 8

Bryan showed up at my place a month later, having somehow managed to hunt down my address. He was standing outside my apartment building in just a light trench coat, looking completely worn out. He immediately walked toward me the moment he spotted me. "I'm sorry, Julian."I stopped in my tracks and looked at him, noting that even though he had lost some weight, that familiar innocent act was still there. I would immediately give in whenever he lowered his head with such an innocent look in the past—something he was definitely aware of."I really didn't mean for this to happen, Julian. I was just too afraid of losing both of you. You and Naomi are the most important people to me. I truly never meant to hurt you, Julian."I looked at him and felt a bitter sense of irony. "Did it never occur to you that you were hurting me when you walked out of the bedroom wearing the couple shirt I bought Naomi, Bryan?"Bryan's face paled. "That was a misunderstanding…""What about when you made a

  • My Only Wish Is to Leave Her   Chapter 7

Julian's POVI was so busy during my first week abroad that I barely had time to think about what was happening back home. The project team worked at a breakneck pace, with meetings running from 8:00 am until 10:00 pm.I didn't know any of my coworkers, and they didn't know me. They didn't know I had a girlfriend I was about to marry. They didn't know my best friend had destroyed my seven-year relationship. It was better that way, as I didn't have to keep explaining why I was in a bad mood.I was finally free from people telling me that Bryan was just kidding around, that Naomi was simply forgetful, and that I was just being overly sensitive.I was running some errands over the weekend when I passed by a liquor store. I stopped in my tracks when I noticed one of the scotches displayed at the storefront. It was the one I had always liked.I had mentioned it to Naomi more than once, but all she said was, "It's so expensive and such a waste of money."Yet, when Bryan mentioned how m

  • My Only Wish Is to Leave Her   Chapter 6

Bryan called while Naomi was still standing outside Helen's apartment building. He spoke softly, putting on that familiar innocent act. "Is Julian still mad at me, Naomi? Is he blaming me for this again?"Naomi remained silent.Bryan hesitated for a moment before continuing softly, "My hand is still hurting, and the doctor said the wound might leave a scar."Naomi would have gone straight to him before, but this time, she only asked hoarsely, "Why did you wear the shirt that night, Bryan?"Bryan fell silent on the other end before quickly laughing it off. "You know what happened, Naomi. Marshmallow threw up on my sleepwear, so I had to grab whatever I could. You don't think I wore your shirt on purpose, do you?"Naomi closed her eyes and asked, "Why did you tell him that it wasn't our first time sleeping together, then?"Bryan's voice sounded slightly tense as he replied, "I was just messing around. I mean, didn't we always make jokes like that, Naomi?"Naomi tightened her hold
