Chapter 4

Author: Orange Isle
Eleanor’s expression stiffened. She averted her gaze uncomfortably and said nothing.

As for Arnold, he stayed silent for a long while. When he finally spoke, each word cut into my chest like a sharp blade.

“Since you asked, I’ll tell you the truth. We found out ten years ago that Jenna wasn’t our biological daughter. But we had raised her for so long that we had already accepted her as ours. Later, your mom was diagnosed with kidney failure and urgently needed a transplant. We had no choice but to bring you back because you’re a perfect match for her. We gave you life. Now that your mom’s life is in danger, donating a kidney to her is only fair. It is your duty, and you can’t escape it.”

His words cleared everything away, leaving nothing but the bitter truth to see.

The supposed longing and guilt at our first meeting had been nothing but pretense. From the very beginning, the reunion had been a calculated arrangement.

They had two biological sons and Jenna, whom they had raised and cherished for twenty-one years. Yet, they were unwilling to let any of them donate a kidney. Instead, they set their sights on me, the biological daughter they felt no real attachment to. They brought me back simply because I was the one they could sacrifice without hesitation.

I lifted my gaze to them, and my eyes were filled with nothing but sarcasm.

“Don’t you still have two biological sons? I’m sure they’d be a good match too.”

The expressions on all five of their faces changed instantly.

Arnold’s face darkened as he pointed at me.

“Don’t be ridiculous! Damian is the heir to the Sedgewick family, and Theodore is still a child. How could you even suggest such a thing?” he snapped.

Eleanor whipped around to glare at me, her eyes so vicious they looked ready to tear me apart.

“They’re both men. What if losing a kidney ruins their health for the rest of their lives? Willa, how can you be so cruel at your age? You’re trying to harm your own brothers!”

Jenna rushed to Eleanor’s side and supported her, wearing a dutiful, understanding expression.

“If only I were your biological daughter, Mom. I’d gladly give my life to save you.”

The Sedgewick family’s contempt for me deepened.

Damian stepped forward. He reached inside his jacket and pulled out an organ donation consent form.

“Willa, donating a kidney is your second test for joining the Sedgewick family. Sign this, and from this day on, you’ll truly be one of us.”

“One of you?” I scoffed, my voice firm. “From the very beginning, I never wanted to be part of this family, and I will never donate my kidney.”

With that, I turned to leave.

“Stop right there!”

I ignored the furious shouts behind me. But as soon as I opened the examination room door, two bodyguards stationed outside blocked my path.

They dragged me back inside roughly and forced me to sign the consent form.

Immediately after, they bound me tightly and hauled me into the operating room.

The surgeon picked up the anesthesia needle and was about to inject when Jenna shrieked, “No anesthesia! Doesn’t she think she’s tough? Since she dares to oppose the Sedgewick family, she needs to be taught a lesson!”

The surgeon froze mid-motion, clearly conflicted. He instinctively turned to Eleanor.

“But… doing this without anesthesia would be unbearable. The pain could kill her.”

With a sneer, Eleanor spoke in a harsh tone.

“If she dies from the pain, it’s her own fault. She brought this on herself. If anything happens, our family will take responsibility. Just do it.”

The scalpel, glinting coldly under the lights, edged closer and closer until it was about to pierce my skin.

I stared at the white ceiling, trembling uncontrollably in despair.

Suddenly, a deafening bang echoed as the heavy doors of the operating room crashed down.

A sleek, roaring motorcycle burst straight through the entrance, its engine screaming as it skidded into a sharp drift and stopped right next to the operating table.

My adoptive mother, Natasha Steele, ripped her helmet off and hurled it forward. It struck the scalpel cleanly out of the surgeon’s hand.

Meanwhile, my adoptive father, Hank Jernigan, kicked the lead surgeon to the floor and scanned the room with bloodshot eyes.

“Which of you has a death wish? How dare you touch my daughter?!” he roared.

The harsh murmurs cut through the air like a swarm of needles, driving the Sedgewick family to hang their heads in shame.Arnold and Eleanor trembled as they looked at me, their eyes filled with guilt, anguish, and remorse. They had never imagined that their long-lost daughter had been abandoned on the streets at just three years old, left to scavenge through trash, bullied, and barely surviving on fifty cents before she finally found a home.Alas, when I finally met them, full of joy and hope to reunite our family, they abandoned me once again.Their lips quivered as they stammered out an apology.“Willa… we’re so sorry. We failed you. We made you suffer so much… We were wrong. From now on, we’ll make it up to you. We’ll do everything we can to treat you right.”Damian’s and Theodore’s faces burned bright red with shame. They did not dare speak, wishing nothing more than to crawl into a hole and disappear.Meanwhile, Jenna stood in the middle of the crowd, completely pale, as t

My thoughts also drifted back to eighteen years ago.As far back as I could remember, my so-called parents had treated me with nothing but neglect and abuse. They never registered my birth, nor did they ever give me a name. To them, I was simply “Stinky.”At mealtimes, they always ate first, and I lived on whatever scraps were left.My clothes never fit, as they were always someone else’s old hand-me-downs.Whenever they were in a bad mood, I was the first person they took it out on.Then my little brother was born, and I became the burden they wanted to get rid of.One night, I was hiding outside the door when I overheard them talking inside.“Now that we have our son, we can get rid of that little brat. Out of sight, out of mind.”“Fine, we’ll do it your way. It’s been three years since the babies were switched, and no one came looking for her.”“Take her somewhere far away. Make sure she can’t find her way back.”The next day, my so-called mother took me into town for the

I had not even processed what she meant when Jenna suddenly pointed at me, still cradled in Hank’s arms, and screamed at the top of her lungs.“Willa, you imposter! You stole my life! If we hadn’t been switched at birth, I wouldn’t have been stuck with an insignificant family like the Sedgewick family. I’m the Jernigan family’s rightful heiress, the one everyone was supposed to admire!”At her words, the Sedgewick family, who had been on the brink of despair, suddenly lit up as if they had found a lifeline. If I were the Sedgewick family’s biological daughter, that would make Jenna the Jernigan family’s own flesh and blood.Arnold scrambled to his feet, and his voice was filled with urgency.“We raised the Jernigan family’s real daughter like a princess for twenty-one years, never letting her suffer a single hardship. Even if we deserve no credit, surely our efforts count for something.”Eleanor nodded vigorously, but beneath her tearful voice lay naked calculations.“Jenna is y

The moment Byron addressed Hank as “Mr. Jernigan,” the entire place fell silent once again.Natasha slowly turned, still wiping her dagger clean, and shot Byron a sidelong glance. “I’ve got to say, Byron, your management is a joke. Since when did you start letting any Tom, Dick, and Harry into my family’s hospital?”When Byron got a clear look at Natasha’s face, he nearly jumped out of his skin.“She’s the notorious Steele family heiress that no one in Jentworth’s elite circle dares to offend! The entire hospital belongs to her family. One word from her, and I’ll be cleaning out my office,” he thought.Hank held me securely in his arms and cast Byron a cool glance.“A hospital is meant to save lives, not to let people abuse their power and commit wrongdoing,” he said icily.Faced with the two living nightmares, Byron’s knees nearly gave out. He hurriedly bent forward with a fawning smile, his tone humble to the point of servility.“Y-Yes, Mr. Jernigan. You and Miss Steele are

They could not be bothered to deal with the ridiculous fools in front of them anymore.Hank leaned over and carefully lifted me into his arms before heading straight for the operating room exit.Arnold’s face turned grim. With a sharp wave of his hand, he barked, “Stop them. She’s donating her kidney today, whether she wants to or not!”The bodyguards at the door immediately rushed forward and surrounded us.But Hank and Natasha, who had been trained in combat since childhood, handled them effortlessly.Hank moved smoothly while holding me, working in perfect sync with Natasha. Within moments, the guards were all down, groaning on the floor with bruised faces. The expressions of the Sedgewick family members changed instantly. When Eleanor realized brawn would not work, her eyes filled with tears. She sank to the floor, covered her face, and cried hysterically.“Someone please hear me out! I’m critically ill and in urgent need of a kidney transplant, but my biological daughter

Amid the swirling dust, the Sedgewick family stood rooted to the spot, stunned by the chaos and unable to process what had just happened.Natasha fixed her gaze on me, bound tightly and trembling uncontrollably on the operating table. The killing intent around her felt almost tangible. She drew a dagger from her studded boot and sliced through the bindings in a single clean motion, freeing me at once.“Don’t be afraid, Willa. We’re here.”My nose stung as all the fear and pent-up grievance within me finally broke loose.“Mom! Dad!”Those two words snapped the Sedgewick family members back to reality. Their expressions changed instantly. Arnold’s expression darkened first. He sized up Hank and Natasha from head to toe, taking in their studded clothing and rough, edgy appearance.“So you’re Willa’s so-called parents? Just a couple of lowlife punks?”Eleanor frowned and pulled a black card from her purse, holding it out as if she were doing them a favor.“You’re here for money, a
