Chapter 2

Author: Mimi Winterrest
When I opened my eyes again, the world had gone quiet.

I floated above the room and watched as my body was carried away, leaving behind a glaring pool of crimson.

I felt strangely hollow, yet also lighter, as though an enormous weight had finally been lifted from my shoulders.

I wanted to go home. I was afraid that my parents would be devastated by my death. Even as a ghost, I wanted to stay with them a little longer.

The moment the thought entered my mind, I found myself somewhere both unknown and familiar.

It was not the mold-infested basement we called home. It was the sprawling riverfront apartment downtown where I had lived ten years ago.

Sunlight streamed through the enormous floor-to-ceiling windows, spilling across the expensive leather sofa.

The air carried the subtle fragrance of Dad’s favorite designer candle, an extravagant indulgence that cost hundreds of dollars.

Three people were sitting on the sofa.

My mother, supposedly ravaged by terminal cancer, was now the picture of health as she calmly sipped tea from a delicate porcelain cup.

My father, supposedly so depressed that he wanted to end his life, was leisurely reading the financial section of the newspaper.

Between them sat a little girl who seemed to be about ten years old.

The girl was dressed head to toe in designer clothes and clutching the latest handheld gaming console.

She said, “Dad, this level is so hard! Beat it for me!”

Dad set down his newspaper and affectionately stroked her hair. His eyes were brimming with adoration. “Oh, you’re the smartest girl in the world.

“Give it another try. I know you can do it. If you still cannot beat it, have your mom buy you some better gear.”

Mom burst out laughing. “Of course I will! You can have any gear you want. No daughter of the Lawson family should ever be stuck with basic equipment.”

I hovered there, paralyzed, as though those words had petrified my soul.

Was I imagining this?

Over the past ten years, I watched Mom writhe in agony countless times with her cold sweat soaking through the sheets. I watched Dad stare blankly at a bottle of sleeping pills before breaking down in despair.

To pay for their treatment, I worked three jobs a day and survived on three hours of sleep. To save money, I ate customers’ leftovers and filled my stomach with water whenever I was hungry.

My hands became raw and infected from hauling bricks, while years of carrying heavy loads left my knees permanently damaged.

I had even allowed my leukemia to progress to its final stage because I could not bring myself to spend money on treatment.

Yet here they were, perfectly healthy.

They were living in a kind of luxury I had never even allowed myself to dream of.

“Honey,” Dad said suddenly, almost offhandedly, “Bruno seems to have lost an awful lot of weight lately.”

At the mention of my name, Mom’s smile faded. She gave a dismissive scoff. “Losing a little weight won’t hurt him. He was too spoiled before. The slightest bit of chore had him complaining that he was tired.

“Young men need to experience some hardship. We’re only doing this for his own good.”

Mom set down her teacup and continued in an earnest tone. “Think about what he was like ten years ago. He expected everyone to wait on him hand and foot, and he spent money as though it were endless.

“If we had handed him the family business back then, he would’ve run it into the ground in three years. Look at him today, though.

“Over the past decade, he has learned to live frugally, endure hardship, and make sacrifices for his family. That proves that our approach worked.”

Dad sighed. He appeared troubled for a moment, but his misgivings were quickly replaced by self-congratulation.

“Exactly. If we hadn’t pretended to be broke and sick, he never would’ve become this responsible.

“Now, he sends us his paycheck every month without fail, and he won’t even buy himself a new pair of shoes. He has finally grown up and learned to put his parents first.”

“It is just...” Dad glanced at Penelope, who was still engrossed in her game. “Penelope is ten. How much longer are we going to keep this from him?

“Won’t Bruno be furious when he finds out that we have been lying to him for the past ten years?”

Mom frowned. She sounded utterly convinced that they had done nothing wrong as she said, “Wasn’t that the whole reason we did this? We knew he’d be upset about Penelope.

“We doted on him his entire life, and he never learned to share. When Penelope was born, we were afraid he would resent having to share everything with her.

“That was why we put him through all this, to toughen him up.

“Surely, after all these years, he has learned his lesson. He should be past fighting Penelope over what belongs to whom.

“It is impossible to treat two children exactly the same. I just hope he understands that we did all of this with his best interests at heart.”

Many people attended my funeral. There were relatives I had once known, old friends, and business associates of the Lawson family. They stood near my grave, whispering among themselves.“He is dead? Didn’t they tell everyone he was studying abroad?”“I heard he worked himself to death.”“The Lawsons are really heartless. The moment their daughter was born, they stopped caring about their son.”Every whispered remark landed like a blow against Mom and Dad.Dressed in black, they stood beside my grave looking as though they had aged twenty years.Penelope stood nearby, bewildered. She could not understand why Mom and Dad had barely spoken to her for days. Nor could she understand why they were so devastated that the “bad brother” they had told her about was dead. After the funeral, our family fell apart completely. One by one, every illness they had invented to deceive me began to afflict them for real, as though their lies had become curses.Mom was the first. Not long af

The wardrobe was almost empty. It contained only two once-white T-shirts, now yellowed with age and stretched at the collars, and a pair of black work pants worn smooth and shiny from years of use. Those were my work clothes.Beside them hung a heavy coat, the only thing I owned to keep myself warm during winter.Dad took down the coat and ran his hands over it.It was covered in patches, each one held in place by uneven stitches. It was my own handiwork.I could not spare the money to have it professionally repaired, much less buy a new winter coat. “How... How can this be all he had?” Dad clutched the coat to his chest. He was sobbing so hard that he could barely stand. “I design clothes for a living, and my own son spent ten years wearing this.”Mom began searching through the desk drawers. She was desperate to find something, any small sign that I had experienced even a little happiness, to ease her guilt. There was nothing. The drawers contained only a thick stack of

“This is the son you called selfish and ungrateful?”The older officer’s voice boomed through the morgue.Mom took the phone with trembling hands and read the entries one by one, each one revealing another sacrifice I had made for them.“No!”A broken, anguished scream tore from her throat. She staggered backward and collapsed to the floor. She clutched her head as she sobbed uncontrollably. Her entire body convulsed with every ragged breath. She bit down so hard that blood soon appeared at the corner of her mouth.“I’m a monster! I have money! I’m worth billions! Why did I pretend we were poor? Why did I test him? Bruno, I had money! You didn’t have to die for me! I never needed your insurance money!”Dad stumbled toward the gurney and gripped its edge for support. He reached for my face but could not bring himself to touch it.“My son... My precious boy... I’m sorry. I never should’ve lied to you. The tests, the inheritance, none of it mattered! It was all bullshit! All of

The police cruiser sped toward the county medical examiner’s office, its siren wailing.Inside, the silence was deathly. My parents huddled in the corner. They were trembling as they muttered, “It can’t be true. There must be a mistake. He’s just trying to scare us.”They were still clinging desperately to their denial. The truth was, if they admitted that I was dead, then everything they had done to me over the past ten years in the name of teaching me a lesson would amount to murder. They arrived at the morgue.A wave of bone-chilling cold greeted them. The medical examiner was already waiting.“Are these his parents?” She was a young woman. She regarded them with the same mixture of contempt and disbelief. She approached the stainless-steel gurney and placed one hand on the corner of the white sheet. “Prepare yourselves.”In one swift motion, she pulled back the sheet.Beneath it lay a body so emaciated and ravaged that it scarcely looked human. That was me.Bruno La

The law firm was bustling with clients and staff.Mom and Dad were dressed head to toe in designer labels, carrying themselves with the smug arrogance of people convinced that justice was on their side. They marched straight into the estate attorney’s office and dropped the family trust documents onto his desk.“We want to amend the trust,” Mom said coldly. “Remove Bruno Lawson as a beneficiary.”The attorney examined the documents. “Bruno Lawson? Is he here? Under the terms of this trust, removing him requires his signed consent.”“He can’t come,” Dad replied with biting sarcasm. “He’s angry with us and far too busy pretending to be a corpse.”The attorney frowned, clearly missing the sarcasm. “He is dead? In that case, I’ll need a certified death certificate. His interest would be handled under the trust’s death provisions. You can’t simply remove him.”“There is no death certificate! He has simply decided that he doesn’t want us as parents anymore!” Mom tapped the desk impati
