Chapter 4

Auteur: Liora Z
I had explained how serious it was. I thought Chloe would see reason.

But she didn’t care at all. She just mocked me.

“Liam’s mother?” She drew the words out slowly. “In cheap clothes from Walmart?”

She kicked Mary’s simple black shoes with the tip of her rhinestone-studded heel.

“I’ve seen Liam’s credit card bills. The money he spends on me in one month could buy your mother’s entire wardrobe for life.”

The crowd of rich onlookers let out a piercing laugh.

“Chloe’s right. A man on Liam’s level? His mother wouldn’t look so pathetic.”

“They’re definitely professional scammers. This must be the big finale.”

Mary’s breathing grew even more shallow.

Her fingers dug into my sleeve, her nails sinking into my skin.

“Ava…” she managed to choke out my name.

I could feel the life draining out of her.

“Please!” I screamed at Chloe. “She’s really dying!”

Chloe toyed with the pill bottle, a twisted smile on her face.

“Dying? We’re already at the climax?”

She suddenly crouched down, her face close to my ear. Her hot breath was on my skin.

“You’ve told so many lies just to get this bottle, haven’t you? Fine. Get on your knees. Lick up that puddle of serum I spilled earlier. Use your tongue. Lick it clean, and I’ll give you the medicine.”

I looked deep into Mary’s eyes as she lay curled on the floor.

Mary looked back at me, her voice a pained, raspy whisper.

“Don’t…”

Even in her agony, Mary didn’t want me to be humiliated for her.

Even though Liam had cheated, Mary had always treated me like her own daughter. She was always telling Liam he had to be good to me, that he could never do anything to hurt me, or she’d disown him. She insisted on living alone in Ohio just so she wouldn’t be a bother, so we could have our own life. Every time she visited, she’d bring a huge bag full of homemade apple pies.

Watching Mary’s breath fade, her face growing grayer by the second…

I didn’t hesitate. I got on my knees.

I swallowed the overwhelming nausea and humiliation. I stuck out my tongue and began to lick the cold, sticky liquid off the floor.

I shattered my own dignity. I didn't hesitate. All that mattered was keeping Mary alive.

Seeing this, Chloe pointed at me and roared with laughter.

“Hahaha, look everyone! Doesn’t this bitch look just like a dog?”

“A minute ago she was acting so high and mighty. Now she’s on her knees licking the floor at my feet!”

The clients in the spa burst out laughing, too.

“Chloe is going to make the perfect Mrs. Vance. She really knows how to put trash in its place.”

I ignored their insults. I fought back the urge to vomit and licked up every last drop of the serum.

I looked up at Chloe, my voice desperate.

“I did what you asked. Now can you give me the medicine?”

Chloe just sneered.

“You really are an idiot. You actually believed me? I was lying.”

With that, she walked over to a nearby restroom, threw the life-saving medicine into the toilet, and flushed.

“No!”

I watched the bottle vanish down the toilet. A scream died in my throat. My world shattered.

At that exact moment, Mary’s body gave a final, violent shudder. Her eyes went blank.

She weakly lifted a hand and wiped a tear from my cheek. “Ava… I’m sorry.”

Was she sorry for the humiliation I’d endured?

Or was she sorry for what Liam had done?

After those words, her hand fell to the floor.

Her faint breathing stopped.

“Mary? Wake up! Mary!”

I shook her frantically, but there was no response.

Mary was dead.

I couldn’t believe it. We had just come to try out Liam’s new spa. And we ran into this vicious woman, Chloe, who had literally tortured Mary to death right here.

I broke down, sobbing.

The crowd went silent.

Some people were starting to realize how serious this was.

“She’s… she’s really not moving.”

“Check if she’s breathing!”

An employee knelt down and shakily placed two fingers on Mary’s neck.

A moment later, he stood up, his face pale.

“She’s… dead.”

Gasps rippled through the crowd.

But Chloe was still fearless.

“Some old woman died from her own health problems. What’s it got to do with me?” She fixed her hair. “Besides, Liam will be here any minute. He’s a big shot on Wall Street, with connections everywhere. He’s got my back. I’m not scared of anything.”

Hearing that, the nervous employees instantly relaxed.

Seeing Chloe’s arrogance, a furious rage boiled up inside me.

A primal scream ripped from my lungs. Fueled by a surge of pure adrenaline, I launched myself at Chloe, my hands clamping around her throat.

“You murderer!” I screamed, my hands tightening. “You killed her! You!”

Chloe’s eyes rolled back in her head as she clawed at my hands.

But the employees were on me in a second.

Their fists rained down on me.

Ribs, back, cheeks. Every punch was vicious.

They beat me to the ground. I was covered in blood.

Chloe stood up, clutching her neck, her eyes filled with venom.

She grabbed a sharp metal probe from a beauty cart. The sharp tip glinted in the light.

“You bitch. No one has ever dared to touch a hair on my head. Today, I’ll show you what happens when you mess with me!”

Chloe raised the metal probe.

She plunged it deep into my thigh.

Blood spurted out. The pain was blinding.

I didn’t scream. My eyes were red. My voice was a low snarl. "You're going to die for this, Chloe. I swear to God, you will die for this!"

Chloe was furious. “Bitch! You still dare to threaten me?”

Enraged, she used me as her personal pin cushion, stabbing me again, and again, and again.

Just as I was about to lose consciousness, someone in the crowd yelled:

“Mr. Vance is here!”

The moment he saw my mother, Liam's face went white as a sheet. His mouth hung open but no sound came out. He looked like he’d seen a ghost."Mom..." His voice trembled. "What... what are you doing here?"My mother glided forward, her eyes scanning the desecrated memorial."I came back from Paris," she said, her voice calm and commanding. "To attend your mother's funeral."Your mother. The words struck Liam like a bolt of lightning. He started to sway.He looked around at the relatives, and a horrible truth finally dawned on him. These people... they were all his family.Mary's brothers and sisters. Mary's nieces and nephews. They were all Vances. Not Morrisons."No... impossible..." He stumbled toward the paint-splattered portrait on the floor. He dropped to his knees and frantically tried to wipe away the red paint with his hands."This isn't my mom... It can't be my mom..."His fingers bled as he scraped at the paint, but he didn't stop.Chloe stood nearby, disgusted."Darling, don'

After sending the message, I blocked Chloe.Less than ten minutes later, my phone started ringing off the hook. The caller ID: Liam.I answered."Ava!" Liam's furious voice yelled through the phone. "What did you say to Chloe? She's a hysterical mess, saying you cursed her and she'll never get my mom's approval! How can you be so vicious?"Vicious?I almost laughed out loud."Liam, do you know what vicious is?" my voice was calm. "Vicious is watching an old woman die and doing nothing.""That's bullshit!" Liam roared. "That old hag was your mother, not mine!""And I have some good news for you. Chloe's pregnant!"Pregnant? That was a surprise."My mom would never turn her back on her only grandchild," Liam said, his voice triumphant. "As soon as I take Chloe to meet her and get her blessing, we're getting a divorce! And you'll walk away with nothing! Not a single penny!"Listening to his excitement, I just found it pathetic. So pathetic."Well then, I wish the three of you a happy fami

The funeral home staff started preparing to move Mary’s body.Liam never looked at her again. It was as if she wasn’t a person, just a pile of trash.Captain Miller was still hesitant."Mr. Vance, are you sure about this? What if family comes looking for her later...""They won't," Liam waved his hand, annoyed. "She's a nobody. No family. If she's dead, she's dead."Captain Miller looked at me. "And you, ma'am? Do you have any objection?"All eyes turned to me.I looked at Mary's peaceful face. She would never open her eyes again, never say my name, never worry about my marriage to Liam.If her own son didn't care, why should I?"Whatever," I said, my voice empty. "He's in charge."Captain Miller let out a breath of relief."Then we'll do as Mr. Vance says."Two attendants came over and placed Mary's body in a black bag.The sound of the zipper was deafening in the quiet hall. They put the bag on a gurney and wheeled it toward the door.Just like that, Mary was gone.No funeral, no mem

I had made it perfectly clear.I thought Liam would be shocked. Devastated. That he would rush over to Mary’s body and weep. But he just glanced at her on the floor. His tone was cold.“Your mom came here to make trouble. It's not our fault she died. You’ll need to sign a liability waiver. Just say your mother came here, had a sudden medical issue, and passed away. It has nothing to do with Chloe.”“Chloe is young. She has her whole life ahead of her. I won’t let a useless old woman who's already dead ruin her life.”Liam's tone was so casual. His face was a mask of indifference. And it was all because he thought the dead woman was my mother. How ironic.I never imagined my own husband could be so heartless.I shook my head in disappointment.“Liam, I’m not the one who should sign that. You should be the one to sign it.”Liam frowned, his patience wearing thin.“It’s your mom who died, what’s my signature got to do with anything? Ava, stop making a scene and leave Chloe alone!”I looke

My voice—his wife's voice—stopped him cold.He turned slowly, staring at me in disbelief. His eyes were wide with shock.Like he was seeing a ghost."You..." His voice trembled.Chloe flew into a rage."You bitch!" she shrieked. "Who gave you the right to say my man's name? A piece of trash like you isn't worthy of saying his name!"The customers started yelling too."She's so shameless!""Still trying to seduce another woman's man, even now!""The nerve on her, pretending she knows him when she's about to be arrested!""Looks like a slut trying to be a homewrecker!"I ignored them all. My eyes were fixed on Liam, the man I had shared a bed with for three years."What?" I said, my voice ice. "You think I'm not worthy of saying your name either?"Liam opened his mouth, but no sound came out.He was strangely silent.Seeing him hesitate, Chloe went ballistic."What are you waiting for?" she screamed, lunging at me. "What's so interesting about this psycho?"She raised her hand to slap me

Liam hung up. His movements were fluid, like he was closing a simple business deal. After we married, Liam used my family's resources to climb the ladder. Now, the penniless boy I once knew was now a power player. The kind of man who made problems—and people—disappear.Nothing was too big for him.Even a human life was just a small problem he could solve with a few words."It's all taken care of, baby," he said, gently caressing Chloe's cheek. "You're still in charge here.""Really?" Chloe's eyes lit up."Of course," Liam nodded, his voice full of affection. "If anyone ever gives you trouble on your turf again, you teach them a lesson. I'll clean up any mess."Chloe smirked. She turned to the employees. "Did you hear that?" she screeched. "This is my kingdom! Anyone who disobeys me will end up just like them!"The employees practically bowed. They fawned over her."You're amazing, Miss Chloe!""We're lucky to work for you!""Mr. Vance spoils you so much!"Just then, sirens grew louder.
