Chapter 2

Auteur: Liora Z
My words made Chloe’s face darken. She gritted her teeth.

“I get it now. You’re one of those cheap sluts, aren’t you? Making a scene just to seduce my man?”

She pulled her phone out of her Hermès bag and expertly opened Instagram.

“Everyone, look what I’m dealing with at my store today.” She aimed the camera at us, her voice sickeningly sweet. “A desperate gold-digger and her trashy-looking mom, trying to get freebies at my spa.”

“Oh, I see—you just wanted to use my high-end spa, take a few photos of your treatment, post them on social media, and hook a rich guy.

“Let me tell you something. My husband loves me. Trash like you? Dressed like you're going to a funeral? My husband wouldn't spit on you if you were on fire!”

Her voice was loud. It drew the attention of the other wealthy clients.

In front of everyone, she started an Instagram Live and kept yelling at me.

“Come on, everyone, look at this shameless woman!”

“She brought her frumpy mom to my high-end spa. Now she can’t pay and wants to offer her body instead!”

“But the second she saw me—the real lady of the house—she lost her nerve. She even said she’d wait for my husband to come ‘deal with her’ personally!”

“I’m putting her disgusting face on blast right now. So everyone can be careful. Don’t let this kind of trash seduce your husbands!”

On the phone screen, the viewer count was skyrocketing.

Comments flew across the screen.

OMG, that woman looks so cheap!

What is her mom wearing? Looks like it’s from a thrift store.

Chloe, call the cops! Don’t let people like that dirty up your spa!

The other clients started to gather around.

They whispered and pointed.

“How pathetic. She’ll do anything to trap a rich man.”

“Look at how they’re dressed. There’s no way they can afford $5,000.”

“These crazy women are getting out of control.”

“You… you…” Mary had never seen someone twist the truth like this. She was gasping for air, clutching her chest, unable to speak.

I held her, feeling her body shake.

The kind old woman had never been humiliated like this in her life.

“It’s okay, Mary,” I whispered. “Everything will be okay.”

I patted Mary’s back to calm her down, then pointed at the $9.90 Groupon receipt.

“We just came for a basic facial. She’s forcing us to buy a five-thousand-dollar package. This is extortion!”

I looked at Chloe, my voice cold.

“This is extortion! We're not paying. We have rights. If you can’t handle that, then get your man down here to talk to us!”

A murmur went through the crowd.

Some people started to look doubtful.

“Five thousand for a basic facial?”

“That’s insane.”

Chloe’s face changed.

She quickly moved the camera away from the receipt. “Don’t let them fool you! These professional scammers are experts at twisting the truth!”

“We’re not scammers.” My voice was quiet, but clear. “We’re just waiting for your man to handle this.”

Seeing me talk back, she gave her staff a signal.

Four or five employees immediately closed in, trapping us.

“Listen up, you clueless bitches.” Chloe’s voice turned venomous. “This is Chloe’s turf. I call the shots. I say how much you pay, and you pay it! Forget forcing you to buy something. I could make you lick the dirt off my shoes, and you'd still thank me for the privilege of paying!”

She paused, then yelled even louder.

“If you don’t get on your knees, apologize, and pay the $5,000 right now, neither of you is walking out of here alive!”

The moment he saw my mother, Liam's face went white as a sheet. His mouth hung open but no sound came out. He looked like he’d seen a ghost."Mom..." His voice trembled. "What... what are you doing here?"My mother glided forward, her eyes scanning the desecrated memorial."I came back from Paris," she said, her voice calm and commanding. "To attend your mother's funeral."Your mother. The words struck Liam like a bolt of lightning. He started to sway.He looked around at the relatives, and a horrible truth finally dawned on him. These people... they were all his family.Mary's brothers and sisters. Mary's nieces and nephews. They were all Vances. Not Morrisons."No... impossible..." He stumbled toward the paint-splattered portrait on the floor. He dropped to his knees and frantically tried to wipe away the red paint with his hands."This isn't my mom... It can't be my mom..."His fingers bled as he scraped at the paint, but he didn't stop.Chloe stood nearby, disgusted."Darling, don'

After sending the message, I blocked Chloe.Less than ten minutes later, my phone started ringing off the hook. The caller ID: Liam.I answered."Ava!" Liam's furious voice yelled through the phone. "What did you say to Chloe? She's a hysterical mess, saying you cursed her and she'll never get my mom's approval! How can you be so vicious?"Vicious?I almost laughed out loud."Liam, do you know what vicious is?" my voice was calm. "Vicious is watching an old woman die and doing nothing.""That's bullshit!" Liam roared. "That old hag was your mother, not mine!""And I have some good news for you. Chloe's pregnant!"Pregnant? That was a surprise."My mom would never turn her back on her only grandchild," Liam said, his voice triumphant. "As soon as I take Chloe to meet her and get her blessing, we're getting a divorce! And you'll walk away with nothing! Not a single penny!"Listening to his excitement, I just found it pathetic. So pathetic."Well then, I wish the three of you a happy fami

The funeral home staff started preparing to move Mary’s body.Liam never looked at her again. It was as if she wasn’t a person, just a pile of trash.Captain Miller was still hesitant."Mr. Vance, are you sure about this? What if family comes looking for her later...""They won't," Liam waved his hand, annoyed. "She's a nobody. No family. If she's dead, she's dead."Captain Miller looked at me. "And you, ma'am? Do you have any objection?"All eyes turned to me.I looked at Mary's peaceful face. She would never open her eyes again, never say my name, never worry about my marriage to Liam.If her own son didn't care, why should I?"Whatever," I said, my voice empty. "He's in charge."Captain Miller let out a breath of relief."Then we'll do as Mr. Vance says."Two attendants came over and placed Mary's body in a black bag.The sound of the zipper was deafening in the quiet hall. They put the bag on a gurney and wheeled it toward the door.Just like that, Mary was gone.No funeral, no mem

I had made it perfectly clear.I thought Liam would be shocked. Devastated. That he would rush over to Mary’s body and weep. But he just glanced at her on the floor. His tone was cold.“Your mom came here to make trouble. It's not our fault she died. You’ll need to sign a liability waiver. Just say your mother came here, had a sudden medical issue, and passed away. It has nothing to do with Chloe.”“Chloe is young. She has her whole life ahead of her. I won’t let a useless old woman who's already dead ruin her life.”Liam's tone was so casual. His face was a mask of indifference. And it was all because he thought the dead woman was my mother. How ironic.I never imagined my own husband could be so heartless.I shook my head in disappointment.“Liam, I’m not the one who should sign that. You should be the one to sign it.”Liam frowned, his patience wearing thin.“It’s your mom who died, what’s my signature got to do with anything? Ava, stop making a scene and leave Chloe alone!”I looke

My voice—his wife's voice—stopped him cold.He turned slowly, staring at me in disbelief. His eyes were wide with shock.Like he was seeing a ghost."You..." His voice trembled.Chloe flew into a rage."You bitch!" she shrieked. "Who gave you the right to say my man's name? A piece of trash like you isn't worthy of saying his name!"The customers started yelling too."She's so shameless!""Still trying to seduce another woman's man, even now!""The nerve on her, pretending she knows him when she's about to be arrested!""Looks like a slut trying to be a homewrecker!"I ignored them all. My eyes were fixed on Liam, the man I had shared a bed with for three years."What?" I said, my voice ice. "You think I'm not worthy of saying your name either?"Liam opened his mouth, but no sound came out.He was strangely silent.Seeing him hesitate, Chloe went ballistic."What are you waiting for?" she screamed, lunging at me. "What's so interesting about this psycho?"She raised her hand to slap me

Liam hung up. His movements were fluid, like he was closing a simple business deal. After we married, Liam used my family's resources to climb the ladder. Now, the penniless boy I once knew was now a power player. The kind of man who made problems—and people—disappear.Nothing was too big for him.Even a human life was just a small problem he could solve with a few words."It's all taken care of, baby," he said, gently caressing Chloe's cheek. "You're still in charge here.""Really?" Chloe's eyes lit up."Of course," Liam nodded, his voice full of affection. "If anyone ever gives you trouble on your turf again, you teach them a lesson. I'll clean up any mess."Chloe smirked. She turned to the employees. "Did you hear that?" she screeched. "This is my kingdom! Anyone who disobeys me will end up just like them!"The employees practically bowed. They fawned over her."You're amazing, Miss Chloe!""We're lucky to work for you!""Mr. Vance spoils you so much!"Just then, sirens grew louder.
