Chapter 2

Author: Full Luck Mode
By the time I got home, the living room was packed with gifts. Hermès bags, designer dresses, and a massive bouquet of imported roses filled the room.

On the coffee table sat a card that read, "Honey, I'm sorry."

I barely glanced at it before walking past and heading upstairs to pack. Seth followed me up, still wearing that ripped tank top.

Standing in our lavishly decorated home dressed like that, he looked ridiculous.

"Nat, stop," he said, slapping a black credit card against the doorframe. "Whatever you want, I'll buy it for you right now. Can we not do this?"

I pushed his hand aside and pulled my clothes out of the closet one by one, stuffing them into my suitcase.

"Listen to me!" He grabbed the suitcase, panic evident in his voice. "The woman at the docks is someone who helped me before. She's struggling now, and I was only trying to help.

"You're my wife. You're the person I love most."

I met his gaze. He looked completely sincere, like he was the man who loved me more than anyone in the world.

"Then go tell that to her."

I pulled my suitcase back and continued packing.

Just then, his phone rang. He answered it, and his voice immediately softened.

"Helen, what happened?"

I heard a woman crying on the other end, her words broken and difficult to make out. Apparently, she'd been hit by a handcart while unloading cargo and was now in the medical office at the docks.

Seth's expression changed.

"Don't move. I'm coming right now."

He hung up and glanced at me, saying, "Helen's been injured at the docks. I'm going to check on her. We'll talk when I get back."

I let out a chuckle and kept packing, but something about my laugh seemed to strike a nerve.

"Natasha, she's just a young woman trying to make a living at the docks," he said. "It's not easy for her. Do you really have to pick a fight with me right now?"

"I'm not." I zipped up my suitcase. "Go take care of her."

He stood there, staring at me.

"Seth, are you sure you're going to drive a car worth over a million dollars while still wearing torn clothes?" I asked. "What do you think she's going to assume?"

His expression stiffened, as though he'd finally realized he'd given himself away.

Still, he didn't stay to explain. He grabbed his car keys and hurried out.

Something fell from his pocket with a sharp clatter. It was the little good-luck charm I'd given him.

When we were dating, I'd turned it into a bracelet and tied it around his wrist myself. I'd told him it would keep him safe and asked him never to take it off.

Now that the bracelet had snapped, the charm was broken.

Seth had left in such a hurry that he knocked over a jewelry box by the door. Its contents scattered across the floor, but he didn't even look back. He simply stepped over them and left.

I crouched down and picked everything up one piece at a time.

There were photos of us together, the first little gold pendant he'd ever bought me, and the matching wedding bands we'd exchanged when we got married.

I remembered how Seth had ridden his old secondhand scooter all over town, searching for a pharmacy that was still open when I came down with a terrible fever.

In the end, he knocked on the door of a small clinic and begged the doctor to see me.

He'd sat beside my bed all night, holding my hand and promising me that he'd buy me all my favorite food once I was better.

Back then, he had nothing. He was so broke that he couldn't even bring himself to replace the worn-out battery on his scooter.

The fever might've blurred my vision, but I could still see the earnest look in his eyes.

Now, he had private doctors and access to the best medical care money could buy. He could make one phone call and have an ambulance from an elite private hospital sent to a dockworker he'd barely known.

Yet, he'd forgotten the woman who had spent ten years by his side.

I picked up my phone and sent my lawyer a message.

"I want a divorce."

A noise suddenly came from the doorway. Seth had come back, his hair damp with sweat.

"Where's my charm? Did you see it?" he asked hastily. "It was in my pocket just a minute ago."

I took in how disheveled and breathless he looked, then closed my suitcase.

"No," I replied calmly. "I didn't see it."

He wiped the sweat from his forehead and crouched down to search around the stairs. His phone kept ringing in his pocket, but he silenced it without answering.

"Think carefully," he urged. "I still had it before I came through the door."

"Isn't Helen waiting for you at the hospital?" I hedged, clasping my hands behind my back. "It's just a broken bracelet. Can't you look for it when you get back?"

He froze, as though I'd caught him off guard.

His phone rang again.

"Hey, Helen," he said, gritting his teeth. "I'm almost there. Have the nurse check you over first."

After hanging up, Seth looked at me, torn.

I thought he'd stay and search a little longer, but he turned and walked out.

"I'll take Helen in for some scans and come straight back," he said, glancing back at me from the door. "If you see the bracelet, put it somewhere safe for me.

"It's something you gave me. I can't lose it."

The door closed behind him, and I stood alone in the empty living room. I opened my hand.

Years ago, Seth had taken me to a little chapel to give thanks for something we'd prayed for. The bracelet had gotten soaked in the rain that day, and when we got home, he'd carefully dried it with a hair dryer, strand by strand.

He'd promised he'd wear it forever, and he really had. He'd never taken it off except when he showered.

Now, for another woman, he was willing to leave it behind. Even if he'd lost it, it could wait.

I dropped the broken bracelet into the trash.

It didn't matter anymore. After all, my flight to Aldenburg was leaving in nine hours.

Three months later, I came across a blue diamond necklace at an auction. It was the exact one Seth had texted me about from the docks—the one he'd said he'd bought for me. It sat in the center of the display case, its cold brilliance almost blinding under the spotlights.I raised my bidding paddle. A young man beside me raised his as well. We went back and forth for seven or eight rounds before he finally smiled and lowered his paddle."I'll let the lady have it."I gave him a small nod and signaled to my assistant, Lisa Burton, to handle the paperwork. As the auction ended, the man approached me and handed me a business card."Daniel Lagerfeld. That necklace suits you."I glanced at the card. He was the second son of the Lagerfeld family, and from what I'd heard, he had a good reputation—discreet, well-mannered, and scandal-free."Thank you."I took the card but didn't linger. He didn't try to stop me. As I walked away, I heard him whisper, "You're much prettier than the

Seth didn't make it past the third day.Over those three days, Jerrell Group's stock plunged to its daily limit twice. Helen had sent him a voice message from the hospital, and someone forwarded it to me. Her voice was cold and ragged."Seth, if you transfer another dollar to me, I'll post that video of you squatting at the docks eating dry bread and tell everyone you're a fraud."Seth stopped sending her money.…On the third night, someone knocked on my apartment door. When I opened it, Seth was standing outside. His hair was a mess, his eyes swollen, and he held a small paper bag."Nat," he croaked, his voice raw as though he'd been screaming for days. "I was wrong. I'll walk away with nothing. I don't want a thing. Just ask Sarah to drop the lawsuit, and I'll stay away from you for the rest of my life."I leaned against the doorframe and looked him over. The man who had once charmed everyone at business dinners now stood hunched outside my door, looking completely broke

Around the conference table at Jerrell Group sat 12 shareholders. As soon as I opened the door, the room fell silent.Seth was sitting at the head of the table. Dark circles shadowed his eyes, and he hadn't shaved. He looked surprisingly similar to the exhausted man I'd seen at the docks, crouched over his dry bread. He instinctively stood when he saw me, but I ignored him. I walked over to an empty seat and nodded to Sarah. The LED screen in front of the room lit up. The first photo showed Seth shirtless, crouching at the docks, hauling a sack over his shoulder and eating dry bread. Across from him, Helen sat in an apron. The second showed him holding her hand beside her hospital bed, his expression gentle and full of affection. The third was a still from the hospital's blood-draw room. I was strapped into a chair with a needle in my arm, my face as pale as paper. Seth stood in the doorway looking completely at ease, as though he were waiting for a cup of coffee.Whispers

I didn't return to Seth's house.Sarah arranged for me to stay in an apartment downtown. It was quiet and clean, with fresh sheets on the bed.…Three days later, I received my first phone call."Ms. Hayes, the freeze on the shares is now in effect. Jerrell Group's corporate accounts have all been suspended, and the bank has also restricted Seth's personal cards."I hummed in acknowledgment, hung up, and went back to eating my cereal. That evening, Seth called me from someone else's phone. I answered, but didn't say a word."Natasha! What the hell do you want?" he roared. "The finance department called me today. We can't even make payroll! Do you really have to take things this far?"I stirred my cereal, keeping my voice calm."Mr. Jerrell, that's your company. If you can't make payroll, you should be talking to your finance department. Why are you calling me?""The freeze on my shares was your lawyer's doing!""I told Sarah to do it," I admitted without hesitation. "You t

Silence hung over the room for several seconds."Answer me!" Helen cried, her tears streaming down her face. "Who are you, really? Is she actually your wife? Was everything you told me at the docks a lie?""Helen, I never meant to lie to you," Seth finally said, his voice strained. "I was just worried you were only with me for my money.""For your money?" She let out a bitter laugh. "I skipped meals to buy you socks. I worried about you eating cold bread while you were out there working, only to watch you drive home in a luxury car to your wife. Seth, you made me feel like a complete fool!"She suddenly pulled out her IV and threw off the covers, trying to get out of bed. The moment her injured leg touched the floor, her face twisted in pain."Helen! Your leg hasn't healed yet!" Seth rushed over to steady her, but she shoved him away."Don't touch me! You make me sick! I'd rather die broke than let your dirty money pay for my medical bills."He let her hit him without resistin

Halfway through the second bag of blood, my vision suddenly went black. The nurse looked up at Seth. "Mr. Jerrell, she can't take it anymore. Her blood pressure is dropping fast."Seth stood by the door and glanced back at me. "How much is left?""With the first bag, we're already close to 700 milliliters."He hesitated for only a second."This could kill her," the nurse cried, her hands shaking."If something happens, I'll take responsibility," he snapped, his voice cold. "Helen is on the operating table waiting. If something happens to her because she doesn't have enough blood, who's going to take responsibility?"The nurse gritted her teeth and continued drawing blood. It felt as though my consciousness were being pulled out of me bit by bit, and my body grew lighter. All I could see was the dark red blood bag slowly filling.Right before I lost consciousness, I heard someone shout from the hallway, "The bag is full! Get it to the operating room!"Then I heard Seth's voic
