Chapter 3

Author: Full Luck Mode
Seth sat beside Helen's bed, absently rubbing his wrist. The bracelet was gone, and the empty space around his wrist felt strangely bare.

He found himself staring into space.

Helen's anesthetic had just worn off, and her face was as pale as a sheet.

"Seth, is something wrong?"

"It's nothing." He snapped back to his senses and pulled the blanket higher over her. "Get some rest."

"What happened to your bracelet? Didn't you say you'd worn it since you were a child?"

He froze.

"It broke while I was working," he said, forcing a smile. "I'll look for it when things settle down."

Helen reached for his hand. "Then I'll make you a new one. Once my leg gets better, I'll make you an even nicer one."

Seth held her hand gently and replied, "Focus on getting better for now. Don't worry about anything else."

Once Helen had fallen asleep, Seth stepped into the hallway and dialed my number.

The call wouldn't go through. He tried texting me, only to realize I'd blocked him.

He stared at the screen, a tightness settling in his chest.

He called his assistant, Lucas Zoeller, over and tossed him the phone.

"Bring her back," he ordered. "I don't care how you do it."

…

At the airport, two men stopped me at the security checkpoint.

One snatched my boarding pass while the other pulled my suitcase away. People nearby turned to stare, and some even pulled out their phones to film.

"What are you doing?"

One of the bodyguards started a video call with Seth and shoved the phone in front of my face.

Seth appeared on the screen.

"Natasha, you've got some nerve. How dare you block me?"

I stared at him. "Seth, I'm leaving. If there's nothing else, I'm hanging up."

He suddenly smiled, his voice softening.

"Nat, enough. Come back first. I just had the kitchen make your favorite soup."

I nearly gagged. "Seth, drop the act!"

His expression darkened.

Just as he was about to say something, Helen's voice came from the other side of the call.

"Seth, who is it? Who are you talking to?"

"A friend," he replied. "Go back to sleep."

I sneered. "A friend? Seth, you're pathetic."

That finally made him drop the pretense.

"Natasha, Helen needs a blood transfusion right now," he said, his gaze turning cold. "You both have the same blood type—Rh-negative. If something happens to her, I won't forgive you."

I paused for a second, then laughed.

"Are you treating me like your personal blood bank? You expect me to show up whenever you need blood for the woman you've been keeping on the side?

"Seth, you've got some nerve."

"Just come back," he said, taking a deep breath. "If you refuse, I'll make sure you can't even leave this airport."

The moment he finished speaking, the two bodyguards grabbed me from either side. My suitcase hit the floor, spilling my belongings everywhere. Camera shutters went off around us.

"Look, that guy's here to drag his own wife back."

"Bet he caught her cheating. What a disgrace."

They dragged me away while Seth's tender voice came through the phone.

"Helen, don't be scared. I've already sent someone to find the blood. Just hold on a little longer."

I couldn't believe how gentle he sounded.

…

Outside the hospital room, two men in black forced me down onto a bench.

By the time Seth walked out, I'd already been sitting there for two hours. He strode up to me, his gaze cold with disdain.

"Look at you. You've gotten pretty bold," he said with a sneer. "Can't believe you actually tried to run away."

I didn't bother to look at him.

"Seth, you had these men drag me all the way from the airport. What exactly do you want?"

Before he could say anything, a doctor hurried over. "Mr. Jerrell, the patient's condition is deteriorating. If we can't get enough blood soon, we may have to amputate her leg."

Seth immediately turned toward me.

"Natasha, give her your blood."

My face went pale. "Seth, you know I have anemia! I can't donate that much blood!"

He grabbed my wrist, his grip frighteningly tight. "If she loses her leg, it'll ruin her life!"

"What does that have to do with me?"

"Please, I'm begging you," he gritted out, his eyes bloodshot. "Just give the blood first. When it's done, I'll let you go. I'll sign the divorce papers. I'll give you part of my shares. Name your price."

I let out a bitter laugh, tears burning in my eyes.

"Seth, do you remember what today is?"

He froze.

"It's our tenth wedding anniversary," I said.

I pulled my wrist free, and for the first time, I saw his expression crack slightly.

But then Helen's sob came from inside the room.

"Seth, my leg hurts so much. Am I going to die?"

Seth immediately swerved toward her. He didn't look at me again.

"Take her to the transfusion unit and have them draw 800 milliliters," he ordered, turning to the men beside him instead. "If she refuses, hold her down and do it anyway."

The two men grabbed my arms again.

"Seth!" I screamed. "I could die!"

He stood with his back to me, as though he hadn't heard a word.

When we reached the transfusion unit, a nurse stopped him and handed him the consent form. He grabbed the pen and signed without hesitation.

His handwriting was still the same as it had been ten years ago, when he'd pursued me and filled pages with love letters.

"Draw the blood."

The needle pierced my arm, and the first bag slowly began to fill.

Seth stood in the doorway, looking everywhere but at me.

Three months later, I came across a blue diamond necklace at an auction. It was the exact one Seth had texted me about from the docks—the one he'd said he'd bought for me. It sat in the center of the display case, its cold brilliance almost blinding under the spotlights.I raised my bidding paddle. A young man beside me raised his as well. We went back and forth for seven or eight rounds before he finally smiled and lowered his paddle."I'll let the lady have it."I gave him a small nod and signaled to my assistant, Lisa Burton, to handle the paperwork. As the auction ended, the man approached me and handed me a business card."Daniel Lagerfeld. That necklace suits you."I glanced at the card. He was the second son of the Lagerfeld family, and from what I'd heard, he had a good reputation—discreet, well-mannered, and scandal-free."Thank you."I took the card but didn't linger. He didn't try to stop me. As I walked away, I heard him whisper, "You're much prettier than the

Seth didn't make it past the third day.Over those three days, Jerrell Group's stock plunged to its daily limit twice. Helen had sent him a voice message from the hospital, and someone forwarded it to me. Her voice was cold and ragged."Seth, if you transfer another dollar to me, I'll post that video of you squatting at the docks eating dry bread and tell everyone you're a fraud."Seth stopped sending her money.…On the third night, someone knocked on my apartment door. When I opened it, Seth was standing outside. His hair was a mess, his eyes swollen, and he held a small paper bag."Nat," he croaked, his voice raw as though he'd been screaming for days. "I was wrong. I'll walk away with nothing. I don't want a thing. Just ask Sarah to drop the lawsuit, and I'll stay away from you for the rest of my life."I leaned against the doorframe and looked him over. The man who had once charmed everyone at business dinners now stood hunched outside my door, looking completely broke

Around the conference table at Jerrell Group sat 12 shareholders. As soon as I opened the door, the room fell silent.Seth was sitting at the head of the table. Dark circles shadowed his eyes, and he hadn't shaved. He looked surprisingly similar to the exhausted man I'd seen at the docks, crouched over his dry bread. He instinctively stood when he saw me, but I ignored him. I walked over to an empty seat and nodded to Sarah. The LED screen in front of the room lit up. The first photo showed Seth shirtless, crouching at the docks, hauling a sack over his shoulder and eating dry bread. Across from him, Helen sat in an apron. The second showed him holding her hand beside her hospital bed, his expression gentle and full of affection. The third was a still from the hospital's blood-draw room. I was strapped into a chair with a needle in my arm, my face as pale as paper. Seth stood in the doorway looking completely at ease, as though he were waiting for a cup of coffee.Whispers

I didn't return to Seth's house.Sarah arranged for me to stay in an apartment downtown. It was quiet and clean, with fresh sheets on the bed.…Three days later, I received my first phone call."Ms. Hayes, the freeze on the shares is now in effect. Jerrell Group's corporate accounts have all been suspended, and the bank has also restricted Seth's personal cards."I hummed in acknowledgment, hung up, and went back to eating my cereal. That evening, Seth called me from someone else's phone. I answered, but didn't say a word."Natasha! What the hell do you want?" he roared. "The finance department called me today. We can't even make payroll! Do you really have to take things this far?"I stirred my cereal, keeping my voice calm."Mr. Jerrell, that's your company. If you can't make payroll, you should be talking to your finance department. Why are you calling me?""The freeze on my shares was your lawyer's doing!""I told Sarah to do it," I admitted without hesitation. "You t

Silence hung over the room for several seconds."Answer me!" Helen cried, her tears streaming down her face. "Who are you, really? Is she actually your wife? Was everything you told me at the docks a lie?""Helen, I never meant to lie to you," Seth finally said, his voice strained. "I was just worried you were only with me for my money.""For your money?" She let out a bitter laugh. "I skipped meals to buy you socks. I worried about you eating cold bread while you were out there working, only to watch you drive home in a luxury car to your wife. Seth, you made me feel like a complete fool!"She suddenly pulled out her IV and threw off the covers, trying to get out of bed. The moment her injured leg touched the floor, her face twisted in pain."Helen! Your leg hasn't healed yet!" Seth rushed over to steady her, but she shoved him away."Don't touch me! You make me sick! I'd rather die broke than let your dirty money pay for my medical bills."He let her hit him without resistin

Halfway through the second bag of blood, my vision suddenly went black. The nurse looked up at Seth. "Mr. Jerrell, she can't take it anymore. Her blood pressure is dropping fast."Seth stood by the door and glanced back at me. "How much is left?""With the first bag, we're already close to 700 milliliters."He hesitated for only a second."This could kill her," the nurse cried, her hands shaking."If something happens, I'll take responsibility," he snapped, his voice cold. "Helen is on the operating table waiting. If something happens to her because she doesn't have enough blood, who's going to take responsibility?"The nurse gritted her teeth and continued drawing blood. It felt as though my consciousness were being pulled out of me bit by bit, and my body grew lighter. All I could see was the dark red blood bag slowly filling.Right before I lost consciousness, I heard someone shout from the hallway, "The bag is full! Get it to the operating room!"Then I heard Seth's voic
