Chapter 5

Author: That's All
I realized even my hands were shaking. The weight on my chest finally lifted. I could go to college now. I didn't need to repeat another year with a 626 score hanging over my head.

Mom pulled me into a hug and started crying again.

Dad finished a whole cigarette before saying, "I'm texting all of our relatives right now! We're having a going-to-college dinner!"

The dinner was held at a restaurant in a hotel near our house.

When we arrived, I realized Preston was having a similar celebratory dinner there as well—same day, same restaurant.

His parents, Michael Nolin and Leanne Richmond, happened to be downstairs greeting guests. Since Michael had business dealings with Dad, he immediately came over enthusiastically.

"George, you guys are having dinner here, too? What a coincidence!"

Then he turned to me with a grin. "Fi, why haven't you come over to see Preston lately?"

Before I could answer, a bright female voice suddenly cut in.

"Fi, you actually came!"

Nicole rushed out of the lobby and grabbed my hand. "I thought you wouldn't come. You—"

But before she could finish, I yanked my hand away.

She immediately looked as if she'd been wronged, her eyes reddening. "Fi, you still haven't forgiven us? Preston and I already apologized to you. Can't we just work hard together for the next year?"

Mom stepped directly in front of me.

"Nicole, for the past three years, my daughter has paid your tuition and helped bail you out of trouble. I've never said a word about any of that. But after what you did, even if Fi doesn't hold it against you, her father and I won't let someone as ungrateful as you stay in her life."

Nicole's face turned deathly pale.

Michael and Leanne stood to the side, exchanging confused glances.

Just then, Preston walked over to us.

"Mr. and Mrs. Rycroft, you're the adults here. Don't you think it's too much to talk to a young girl like that?"

I was just about to leave, but hearing him drag my parents into it, I stopped in my tracks. I stepped in front of them and turned to Preston.

"Too much? Preston, when you helped Nicole change my applications and left me with no college to go to despite my decent grades, was that not too much?"

Preston frowned. "That's already in the past. Can you stop—"

"I don't think it's in the past," I interrupted. "And I also don't think there's anything left for us to talk about."

I took a deep breath, grabbed my parents' arms, and said, "Mom, Dad, let's go."

But Preston suddenly reached out and grabbed my wrist.

"That's enough, Fiona. You've been throwing a tantrum for days. Aren't you done yet?" he asked, his voice edged with impatience.

"You're not preparing study materials, and you're not going back to redo your senior year? Do you still want to go to Murlowton U with me or not?"

As he spoke, he started digging through his backpack.

"I got the study notes from this year's top scorer. You—"

"Preston Nolin, I think you've misunderstood something," I said, cutting him off without a second thought and staring him dead in the eye.

"I'm not repeating my senior year, nor am I going to go to Murlowton U with you. I've already been accepted by another college in Sorlington. That's what we're celebrating today."

The stack of study materials slipped from Preston's hands and scattered across the floor.

  • My Perfect Score, Her Perfect Betrayal   Chapter 11

The day the postgraduate admission exam results were released, I was at home for the holidays.I checked my scor. It was much higher than University of Wharry's cutoff from previous years.Mom practically jumped with joy, and even Dad offered a rare smile, saying, "My daughter's amazing."The interview process went smoothly too. In April, I received my official admission letter from the University of Wharry's Law School.I messaged Joshua, "I got in."He replied instantly, "Congratulations! When I go see you, can I take you out to dinner?""Weren't you the one who said once I got in, I should treat you to dinner? How'd it turn into you treating me?" I asked."Then I'll treat you first, and you treat me back. Same difference."I chuckled.…That September, I went to Wharry and started my life as a postgraduate student. The campus was beautiful, especially the law school. The classic, old-style architecture nestled among lush green trees, looking peaceful yet dignified. I me

Preston nodded, seemingly not surprised. "Do you have anywhere in mind?"I hesitated for a second before answering, "I'm still looking around."Maybe he could tell that I didn't want to tell him, so he didn't press further. The two of us stood there for a little longer before he placed the items in his hand back on the shelf and looked at me."Fi, about what happened back then… I'm sorry."This was the second time he apologized to me. The first time was in that restaurant hallway. The second was here, between these supermarket aisles.I hadn't responded to his apology three years ago. Three years later, I still didn't. I just smiled, pushed my shopping cart past him, and walked away.…Once winter break ended and I returned to campus, I threw all my energy into preparing for the postgraduate admission test.Truthfully, I'd already decided on a college a long time ago—University of Wharry. I wanted to be closer to home.Over the past three years, each time I came back for the h

Once classes started, college life turned out to be far more fulfilling than I'd imagined.Law school was demanding. Constitutional law, legal theory, and civil law—every class came with an immense amount of literature and case studies. But behind those seemingly dry and tedious legal articles were living, breathing people and stories. It was a battle of fairness and justice, a clash between rigid rules and human emotions.I began to understand why, when I was choosing my major back then, I'd inexplicably ticked the box for law.It was because I wanted to protect myself. And I wanted to protect those who deserved to be protected.…Joshua would message me from time to time, asking how I was adjusting and whether I was facing any difficulties. Sometimes he'd share some study materials with me or his own experience with preparing for the exams. He told me he was planning to apply for postgraduate study, and his target college was University of Becklam—one of the highest-ranking c

The day my acceptance letter arrived, I opened the envelope and stared at the words "School of Law". An indescribable feeling surged in my heart.I'd chosen this for myself. Not for Preston, not for anyone else, but for me.Mom helped me pack, stuffing things into my suitcase while shedding tears the whole time."The weather over there is nothing like what it is here. Winters are freezing cold, so I packed two extra down jackets for you."Buy your bedding after you get there. Don't worry about it being expensive. Get some good ones. If you don't have enough money, tell me. Don't worry about skimping."I nodded and agreed to everything, my own eyes reddening too.During this period, Preston came to see me three times. The first time, he stood downstairs outside my apartment building for two hours. Mom saw him from the window but didn't let me go down. The second time, he had someone pass along a message saying he wanted to see me and had something to say. I never replied. The t

Michael's body stiffened for a second before he straightened up and looked at me."Fi," he said, his voice hoarse. "Let me apologize to you on Preston's behalf. I… failed to raise him right."I looked at the man who used to treat me like his own daughter, and I felt an indescribable mix of emotions.Whenever I went to the Nolins' house as a kid, Michael would always have their housekeeper make my favorite smoked ribs.He would smile and joke, "How about you be my daughter-in-law someday, Fi?But now, those words sounded like nothing more than a joke.I didn't say anything. I just picked up my glass and took a sip.Michael and Leanne stood in our room for a while, offering a few more apologetic words before finally leaving.Right before he walked out, Michael turned and looked back at me, as if he wanted to say something. But in the end, he said nothing. The moment the door closed, Mom finally broke down in tears. "How did things end up like this?"I wrapped my arm around her

Preston stood frozen in place. The shock in his eyes slowly shifted to disbelief and finally turned into a kind of bewilderment I'd never seen before."That's impossible. All your applications were changed. How could you get accepted?"Nicole's eyes widened too, and all the color drained from her face."Fi, you're lying, right? You clearly said you were going to repeat the year…"Looking at her like this, I suddenly found it all rather ridiculous. Was she worried about me repeating senior year? No. She was afraid I wouldn't.If I repeated the year, she could justifiably stay by my side and continue enjoying all the benefits I brought her.Preston had already found a school for her to enroll in. If I went with her, she'd have company and wouldn't have to face a strange new environment by herself. But if I left? If I really went to college, she'd be left all alone. Her tears, her helpless act, and her fear of being abandoned—there'd be no one to fall for any of it anymore."I'm
