CHAPTER FORTY-FOUR – A Mother’s Last Memory

Stella’s POV

I stood at the top of the staircase for a long time.

The conversation with Jaxon kept replaying in my mind.

He had believed that I was worried.

He had thanked me for telling him.

But he still believed Amber deserved the benefit of the doubt.

I could not blame him.

He had no proof, neither did I.

I let out a quiet sigh and turned toward my bedroom.

CHAPTER FIFTY Three – Where Did You Go?Jaxon’s POVI stood outside Stella’s room for several seconds after everyone had gone quiet. The old photograph was still in my hand.My eyes remained fixed on the smiling woman holding the hand of a little girl.I did not know much about Stella’s mother. In fact, Stella had rarely spoken about her.Yet she had left this photograph behind.Something told me she had not meant to.I carefully placed the picture back on the bedside table.“If you forgot it…”I looked around the room once more.“I’ll make sure you get it back.”I walked downstairs, but the uneasy feeling inside me refused to disappear.Every step felt heavier than the one before. When I reached the living room, Amber was sitting quietly on the sofa. She looked up at me.“Did you find anything?”I slowly shook my head. “No.”She sighed softly.“I’m sure she’ll come back.”I wanted to believe that.I really did.But something inside me kept telling me that this was different.I reache

  • My Plus-Sized Hockey Luna   An Empty Room

CHAPTER FIFTY Two – An Empty RoomJaxon’s POVThe ride back to the house was much quieter than the ride to the exhibition.I rested my arm against the car door and stared out of the window as the city slowly passed by.The auction had gone exactly the way I expected.Amber finally had the necklace she wanted. For some reason, seeing the smile on her face reminded me of the promise I had made to myself years ago.If I ever found the little girl who had helped me during the darkest day of my life, I would repay her kindness in every way I could.Today, I believed I had taken one small step toward keeping that promise.Amber sat quietly beside me, holding the velvet box carefully on her lap.Every now and then, she glanced down at it before smiling to herself.“I’m still having a hard time believing it’s really mine,” she said softly.I smiled.“I’m glad you’re happy.”She looked at me.“Thank you, Jaxon.”“You didn’t have to do all of that.”I shook my head.“I wanted to.”She lowered h

CHAPTER FIFTY One – LeavingStella’s POVBy the time I reached the house, I felt completely empty. The drive back had been a blur.I could not remember a single street we had passed. The only thing I could see was my mother’s necklace resting inside that velvet box.The only thing I could hear was the auctioneer’s voice.“Sold.”I closed my eyes tightly.“No…”The word escaped my lips as I pushed the front door open. The house was quiet. The silence only made everything worse.I stood in the middle of the living room for several seconds, staring at nothing.Every corner of the house reminded me of him.The sofa where we had talked. The dining table where we had shared meals. The staircase where we had laughed together.Everything reminded me of Jaxon.Tears burned my eyes again.I shook my head over and over.“No…”“I can’t do this.”“I just can’t.”My voice grew louder with every word.“I can’t stay here.”“I can’t stay here and pretend everything is fine.”“I can’t stay here and wa

CHAPTER FORTY EIGHT – Whatever It TakesStella’s POVThe auction hall became completely silent as the host carefully lifted my mother’s necklace from the velvet box.The silver chain reflected the bright lights above the stage, and the small blue stone at its center sparkled so beautifully that my eyes immediately filled with tears.I had dreamed of this moment for years.I had imagined seeing it again.I had imagined holding it in my hands.I never imagined I would have to fight for it.The host smiled warmly as he faced the audience.“Ladies and gentlemen, our next item is a beautiful family heirloom with a remarkable history. We will begin the bidding at five hundred thousand dollars.”The moment he finished speaking, bidding paddles began rising across the hall.“Five hundred thousand.”“Five hundred and fifty thousand.”“Six hundred thousand.”The numbers climbed quickly. My heartbeat grew faster with every new bid.I tightened my fingers around the paddle resting in my lap.The
