FAZER LOGINThe deafening silence stretched, feeling the air with thick tension. Gabriella stood frozen, her eyes fixed on Alexander, her chest rising and falling unevenly as she waited painfully. For what? She wasn’t even sure.
Mr. Kingston shook his head disapprovingly.
“Unbelievable,” he muttered. “You’ve lost focus completely.”
Gabriella’s fingers dug into her palms as she forced herself not to react.
“Can you believe this?” he said, turning sharply to his wife.
Mrs. Kingston shifted uncomfortably in her seat.
“Mathew, please…”
“No,” he snapped. “This is not how I raised him. He is busy fraternizing with his employee in the middle of a corporate crisis.”
Alexander remained seated, his expression unreadable and posture rigid. But Gabriella noticed a slight tightening of his jaw.
Dennis’ gaze shifted between Alexander and Gabriella. He exhaled slowly before rising to his feet, clearly tired of watching the situation spiral.
“Alright,” he said calmly, “I think you’re being too harsh. If Alexander wants to get married, I’m sure he has his reasons.”
Mr. Kingston’s expression darkened instantly as his eyes snapped to him.
“Oh, I’m sure you’d like to believe that,” he said accusingly.
Dennis didn’t react, but something in the air shifted.
“What is that supposed to mean?” he asked.
Mr. Kingston laughed coldly.
“Please,” he said, leaning forward, “let’s not pretend like this doesn’t benefit you.”
The words landed hard. Gabriella frowned, glancing between them.
“You walk away from the family business to start your own company, and now that your brother is distracted, in the middle of a crisis, you are more than happy to support him”.
“Mathew,” Mrs. Kingston interrupted, her tone firm with disapproval, “that’s enough.”
But he didn't stop.
“If Kingston Enterprises falls, Raymond Enterprises rises, and the prodigal son finally gets what he wants. Isn't that convenient?” he seethed.
The accusation hung heavily in the room.
There was a slight flicker of hurt in Dennis' eyes. It was brief, but Gabriella caught it before it disappeared.
“That’s not fair, Mathew,” Mrs. Kingston said, shaking her head bitterly.
Dennis exhaled deeply, his lips curving into a faint smile.
“It’s fine. Im used to it,” he said quietly. The playful edge in his voice was gone, replaced by something hollow.
Gabriella could see the fractures in Alexander’s family. There was obviously something deeper that she didn't understand.
Mr. Kingston waved a dismissive hand.
“Spare me the sob story,” he said, then turned to face Gabriella.
“The point is, Alexander is clearly out of his mind because this woman has seduced him.”
The words landed like a slap, making Gabriella inhale sharply.
Mrs. Kingston gasped. “ That’s completely inappropriate…”
But before she could finish, the sharp scrape of a chair cut through the tension like a knife, and everyone froze.
Alexander stood slowly. His expression had changed. Gone was the restraint and silence, leaving something darker.
“That’s enough.” His voice was low but dangerous.
Mr. Kingston let out a humourless laugh. “Or what?”
Alexander’s eyes darkened.
“Gabriella is my fiancee whether you like it or not, and I will not allow you insult her.”
For a moment, neither of them looked away. Then Mr. Kingston stepped forward daringly.
“This has nothing to do with respect. This is about you being blinded.”
He gestured towards Gabriella.
“By this….”
Alexander’s expression hardened instantly.
“Don’t.” The single word was a warning, a threat.
Something unspoken passed between them. A clear line had been drawn.
Gabriella swallowed hard. Her emotions were tangled and spiraling; she felt hurt, relief, and confusion all at once.
“You are going to destroy everything this family has worked hard to build.” Mr. Kingston spat.
“And all because you can’t get your priorities straight.”
“I think I’ve heard enough.” Gabriella finally snapped.
Every head turned to her.
“I didn't come here to be insulted.”
Mr. Kingston opened his mouth to speak, but she didn't let him.
“I may be just a secretary, but with all due respect, sir, you don’t know me,” she said firmly. “So you don’t get to decide what I am.
The room fell silent.
A small smirk played on Alexander’s lips. He recognized that burning fire in her eyes from the first day they met. It was one of the things that intrigued him about her.
Dennis gaze was fixed on her, amusement dancing in his eyes.
“Gabriella has nothing to do with the problems the company is facing,” Alexander turned back to his father, “ so don’t use her as a scapegoat,” he warned.
“This is ridiculous,” Mr. Kingston declared. “ I will not grant you my blessing to go through with this nonsense wedding.”
“Trust me, Dad,” Alexander said with an air of confidence. “This wedding is happening, so I suggest you get used to the idea.
And with that, Alexander walked to Gabriella and grabbed her hand.
“Come on. Were leaving.”
Her heart skipped. He didn't wait for a response, didnt even look back. He pulled her along with a firm grip as they left the dining room.
“Alexander,” Mrs. Kingston called after him, but he didn't stop.
“That’s how you fix your problems? By walking away?” Mr. Kingston’s voice followed coldly, but Alexander ignored him.
Gabriella’s pulse raced as they moved quickly through the hallway and towards the front entrance.
They were almost at the front door when they heard footsteps behind them.
“Alexander,” Dennis called.
They paused and turned to face him.
Dennis stood a few steps away, his expression unreadable.
“So you’re really going through with this?” he asked.
Alexander’s jaw tightened. “I am.”
Dennis nodded as if he expected nothing less, then his gaze shifted from Alexander to Gabriella and lingered.
Something about the look he gave her made her feel exposed.
“Just make sure that whatever you're doing,” his eyes flickered back to Alexander.
“...is worth it.”
The words hung in the air.
“Trust me, this family isn't worth the humiliation.”
Alexander took a step forward. “And what’s that supposed to mean?”
Then a faint smile touched his lips, and Gabriella’s heart skipped violently in her chest.
“Just looking out for you both.”
Alexander gripped Gabriella’s hand tighter.
“Let’s go.”
He turned and pulled her out of the house, slamming the door carelessly.
As they walked towards the car, Gabriella’s mind raced. She turned to look at Alexander, but he didn't look at her. Her head kept spinning as Dennis’ words echoed loudly in her brain.
‘Just make sure that whatever you’re doing is worth it.’
Gabriella wondered what he meant. Was it a warning to Alexander or a warning to her? Or.. something else entirely.
‘Was it worth it?’ Gabriella asked herself.
The humiliation and scrutiny she faced at the hands of Alexander’s father was something she had never dealt with before. The engagement was not even public yet, and she was already being called a gold digger by her soon to be father in law.
“Don't let him get into your head.” Alexander finally spoke.
Gabriella nodded, but she couldn’t shake the thought of Dennis' words, and as the car’s engine roared to life, she knew deep within her that there was worse to come.
Chapter 18- Under His ControlGabriella’s fingers tightened around the phone as a cold wave of unease washed over her.“I…I’m out,” she stammered.“I know.”She forced herself to respond with a steady voice.“Is something wrong?”There was a brief pause on the other end.“Come home.” The line went dead. It was final. There was no room for argument or explanation. She lowered the phone slowly, her mind spinning.Dennis hadn’t looked away. His eyes remained fixed on her, a faint smile resting on his lips.“That sounded serious,” he said casually, taking a sip of his coffee.Gabriella swallowed. “It’s nothing,” she said quickly. But even to her own ears, it sounded like a lie.Dennis tilted his head slightly.“I’m guessing my brother isn't too happy that you came to meet with me.”She forced a smile, “I didn't exactly let him know when I left the house.”“Really?” he raised a brow. “ Well, you'd better get going then, you don't want to keep your fiancée waiting.”Something about the way
Morning came too quickly, and unfortunately for Gabriella, it was a weekend. She stared at the ceiling, her eyes heavy but wide open. Sleep had come in small fragments, filled with echoes of last night. The dinner, the insults, the argument… and Alexander’s silence. Her chest tightened at the memory. Was he really that cruel to have no sympathy at all after what she faced at the hands of his father? She turned onto her side and buried her face in the pillow, wishing she could bury the bitter feeling that sat in the pit of her stomach as well. She didn’t have to go to the office today, which meant she would be cooped up in the house with Alexander. No distractions, no escape, and she was already dreading it.With a tired sigh, she pushed the covers off and sat up, deciding to get started with her morning routine. One thing she knew was that she wasn't going to be leaving her room today. She didn't want to see him. Not yet.Getting out of bed, Gabriella went to the bathroom and took a
The silence in the car was suffocating. Gabriella sat stiffly in the passenger seat, her hands clasped tightly in her lap as the city lights blurred past the window. The tension from the dinner hadn't faded. It followed them, clinging like a second layer.Alexander hadn't said a word since they left the house. His eyes were fixed on the road ahead, and he held the steering wheel with a firm grip, the faint glow from streetlights casting occasional shadows on his face.Gabriella stole a glance at him, but there was no reaction. No explanation, not even an acknowledgement of what had just happened.Nothing.“Well, dinner was a total trainwreck,” she finally said, her voice low.Alexander remained quiet, his eyes still fixed on the road.“Youre not going to say anything? Gabriella frowned. He exhaled slowly, as if calming himself before speaking.“What do you want me to say?”She turned slightly in her seat to face him.“I don't know, maybe something about what happened back there?” she

Gabriella managed to maintain a straight posture, despite the tension sitting in her chest. She forced herself to breathe evenly and beamed a smile as she stood before Alexander’s family. The air in the grand foyer felt thick with expectation.“Good evening. It’s so nice to meet you.” Gabriella said, trying to sound confident.“Welcome,” Mrs. Kingston said warmly, stepping forward with a graceful smile. Unlike her husband’s rigid posture, there was a softness in her eyes that put Gabriella slightly at ease.“Alexander mentioned he was bringing someone over for dinner, and I just couldn’t wait to meet you. He never brings anyone home.”“Thank you, ma’am. You have a lovely home,” Gabriella replied politely, hoping her nerves weren’t obvious in her voice.Mr Kingston only gave a curt nod, his sharp eyes assessing her from head to toe. She could feel the disapproval in his gaze.Dennis, on the other hand, remained silent, leaning slightly against the wall as if he were simply enjoying the
Gabriella barely slept. Tonight, she would meet the parents of the man she was pretending to be in love with. She knew deep within her that this wasn’t going to be any ordinary dinner. She had dressed carefully, choosing something professional but subtle, not wanting to draw unnecessary attention to herself at the office. But it wasn’t just the office she was worried about. It was the family dinner, the gala, and everything beyond it. They all weighed heavily on her heart. After getting ready for work, she grabbed her things and went downstairs, where she found Alexander already waiting for her.“Good morning,” She said“Morning. Let’s get going,” he responded dryly and walked out of the house. The ride to work was awfully quiet, and Gabriella sat stiffly in the passenger seat as the city rolled past outside. Alexander had given the driver the day off and decided to drive them to work himself. His hands held the steering wheel lazily as he expertly maneuvered through the streets.“What
