Chapter 4

I went back to the house, packed my things, and then checked into a nearby hotel.

Over the next two weeks, Lauren didn't call me once. On the other hand, Jasper's social media updates became increasingly frequent.

"The crib I bought for my godson arrived today. Lauren loves it."

"I took Lauren to a followup checkup today. The doctor said the gestational sac is in an unfavorable position and recommended termination. But Lauren said she's willing to risk everything for the child born from love."

Below was Lauren's comment. "Thank you for always being there for me. You're the best."

I stared at the screen and sneered. The doctor had already warned her repeatedly that the pregnancy was dangerous, but she was determined to have the baby no matter what.

Fine. Then, let her.

A month later, late at night, I was in my hotel reviewing a contract when my phone suddenly began vibrating nonstop.

It was Jasper. I answered the call.

"Tyson Carter, where the hell are you? Get down to General Hospital right now! Lauren's losing a lot of blood. She's in emergency surgery. What kind of husband are you?"

"If she's bleeding, call the doctors. Why are you looking for me?" I replied.

"They need a family member's consent. The doctors say they have to remove her uterus to save her life!" Jasper yelled. "Get down here and sign the paperwork! If you're any later, Lauren could die!"

My voice remained calm. "You're her best friend, aren't you? You sign it."

"I'm just a friend. The hospital won't accept my signature! They need her legal husband. Hurry up!"

I hung up the phone, changed my clothes, and headed out.

The ER of General Hospital was chaotic. Outside the operating room, people were running back and forth. Lauren's mother, Christina Mayer, was sitting on the floor crying hysterically. Jasper was leaning against the wall, his face deathly pale.

The moment he saw me, he stormed over and grabbed my collar. "You've got some nerve showing up now! Lauren's fighting for her life in there, and you decide to take your sweet time?"

I pulled his hand away. "Don't touch me."

Christina scrambled to her feet and pointed at me. "Tyson Carter, you ungrateful bastard! My daughter nearly died trying to have your child. When you lost everything, she never abandoned you. And this is how you repay her?"

Just then, the operating room doors swung open. A doctor walked out carrying a stack of forms.

"Who is Lauren White's family? The patient has suffered a ruptured scar pregnancy and severe hemorrhage. We need to perform a total hysterectomy immediately. We need her husband's consent."

Jasper shoved me toward the doctor. "Him! He's Lauren's husband. Let him sign."

The doctor handed me a pen. "Sir, the situation is urgent. We need a decision now."

I took a step backward. I didn't touch the pen. "Her life has nothing to do with me."

The entire hallway fell silent.

Christina stared at me in disbelief. "What did you just say? That's your wife in there!"

Jasper gritted his teeth. "Tyson, what kind of man are you? Are you seriously trying to avoid responsibility right now?"

Even the doctor frowned. "Sir, this is not the time to throw a tantrum. A life is at stake."

I reached into my pocket and pulled out a document, holding it up for everyone to see.

"Take a good look. I'm not her husband. We got divorced two weeks ago. So, Lauren has absolutely nothing to do with me anymore. Her life is not my responsibility. Besides, the child isn't even mine!"
