Chapter 11: This Is What He Gave Up.

Lessie’s Standpoint

Later That Night.

The floor was still a bit wet, my mop was in the corner, and I felt so tired from acting like I knew how to clean.

I wiped my hands on my jeans and looked at Lena. She was at her desk, looking at a book and writing fast in a notebook.

She had been quiet since she got mad at me.

I moved a bit, looking at the shut closet and thinking about asking her to pick out a dress for me to wear to the event. I cleared my throat.

"Hey… Lena?"

She did not turn. "What?"

I stopped. This was hard. We were not friends. Just roommates, really.

"I was thinking if maybe…" I stopped, swallowing. "You could pick a dress for me?"

That made her stop.

Slowly, she turned to me. "A dress? For what?"

"The Equinox Celebration," I said, lifting my head some. "I'm going… with Trent."

Her eyes went wide. "You mean Trent?"

I blinked. "Yeah… Trent."

Lena put her pen down. "You mean Trent, the Trent? Like, Trent Maddox, the big deal in the Pack? T

Chapter 123Duaine’s POVI stood where Dylan had left me, his last words still lingering in the air like smoke that refused to clear. When I’m done with what I’m cooking, Lessie will come running to me herself. The haughtiness of the boy was pleasing to me, yet I also resented it. He was a child playing at a game far too big for his hands. It was not my time to waste going on conversing with him. I did not wish to be talking to a puppy that is acting like a wolf. The real thing loomed a few feet in my direction, imposing and towering, weighed down with the remnants of years and guilt, Shane. Her father. The man who had pushed her into a life of obligation she never desired, and the man who had just had the temerity to ask back for her like something owing to him and not even have the decency to listen to his own daughter.I clenched my teeth together and strode towards where he was standing. I didn't care who else remained in the room of the Alpha pack. Let them see. Let them hear. Th

  • My Professor, My Enemy, My Mate   chapter 122

Chapter 122Dylan's POVThe tension in the Alpha Pack great hall remained palpable even after the meeting had ended. Some of the council members were leaving already, their voices hushed and cautious as if fearful that the very walls of stone would eavesdrop. I, however, stayed behind. My senses were heightened, my instincts grasping at me as though some concealed reality hung on the verge of discovery.I took a deep breath and let my wolf rise to the surface for an instant. The smells blended together, I perceived the far-away smells of cedarwood, leather, sweat, and dominance from having dozens of alphas and council members around. But beneath them all, there it was.I perceived something I had caught whiff of before. That smell.I looked at him, my nostrils flaring as understanding seeped deep into me like a knife. The scent was the same one I'd caught, in Shane's pack, on the same day I had come to his pack. I recalled it well, the acrid mix of pine and smoldering coals, carried

  • My Professor, My Enemy, My Mate   chapter 121

Chapter 121Duaine's POVI opened the large doors to the grand hall of the Alpha pack where the meeting was holding later than I was supposed to. The huge oak doors slammed shut behind me. My boots echoed across the marble floor, and every face turned toward me, all looking expectant, sharp, and even critical in some instances.I am sorry, I said to them. My voice rang out despite the tension in the air. "There were some pack matters required my presence. I did not intend to disrespect the council by being late."The head of the Alpha pack, an older wolf narrowed his piercing gray eyes at me.“You’re here now, Duiane,” he said in a calm voice. “That will suffice. Please take a seat.”I nodded and joined the others sitting down, folding my arms over my chest. The large doors creaked open once more, and when I looked back, my body stiffened at once.Walking in, with the confidence that always made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end, was Shane, Lessie's father. He walked proud

  • My Professor, My Enemy, My Mate   chapter 120

Chapter 120Author's POVShane became irritable. The letters that he'd written to his daughter were all left unanswered. Weeks had passed and there was no reply from her yet. At first, he'd thought that she was just not writing due to pride, or even fear, perhaps, but now the silence was torturous. He had no idea if she'd even gotten them. Perhaps someone was hiding them from her. This time he would not send Lessie a letter. He would approach the source of his annoyance, to the man encroaching on his life and his child.Duaine.His chest tightened as he thought of Lessie, the daughter he had raised, the daughter he had guarded, the daughter he ached to have close by.He began writing.Dear Duaine," the letter said, his handwriting crude and bold. "I have sent a number of messages to my daughter and received no response. This silence will no longer be tolerated. I'm taking this matter directly into your hands because I believe you to be its cause."He paused, catching his breath thr

  • My Professor, My Enemy, My Mate   chapter 119

Chapter 119Lessie's POVI cursed under my breath, growling the words out loud, as I walked away, the words spilling over one another in my head like pieces of glass on the sidewalk. My voice was low enough that no one else heard it, but in my head, I was yelling. "Why does he think he just gets to make all the decisions? Why does he always cut me off? Why can't he talk to me? I asked myself.I kept posing the same precise questions again and again in other terms, and all stayed on my mind.I was moving at light speed on foot as if I was being driven by fury. I didn't even know the direction in which I was going. The corridors were no longer an issue, the sounds of the students on school grounds, until only the living organism that lingered in my head was the rage churning within me.I bumped into people as I moved frantically, then all I could say was "Sorry." as I moved on. Some glared at me with rage, some shrugged shoulders, but I didn't have respect enough to bow. Apologies roll

  • My Professor, My Enemy, My Mate   chapter 118

Chapter 118Lessie's POVI recognized that all was not well the moment I walked into Alpha Duiane's office. It wasn't the kind of weight that circulated when he was vexed or displeased with his subordinates. No, not that one either. He reclined behind his desk, the same gruff man to whom I had grown used to, but something was amiss with him. His shoulders weren't quite so straight either, and though he lifted up his head and gave that small smile of his, I knew him too well now to be fooled by that. His eyes gave him away.I'd come to recognize the skeptical look in Alpha Duiane's eyes during the time I'd spent with him. They were hard and cold and commanding if he wanted to remind you he was in charge. They would show softness sometimes, revealing to me a gentleness I never expected from a man like him. But now, when he looked at me, something new was in them, something that was filled with a weight of what he was fighting to conceal from me.But still, he looked at me as if everythi
