Chapter 1

Before I even opened my eyes, the sharp smell of bleach hit me. I inhaled a lungful before I could stop myself and broke into a coughing fit.

"Shut your mouth before you spit all over my clean floor," Mom's familiar angry voice rang out beside me.

I wiggled my fingers and toes, slowly registering what had happened. I was still in one piece and perfectly healthy.

I had been reborn, back to the very first day Mom started mopping the floors with bleach.

Mom was an uneducated but fiercely confident woman from the countryside. Someone had told her that mopping with bleach killed germs, and she'd taken it as gospel and come straight home to put it into practice.

The problem was she never read the instructions and had no idea how damaging bleach fumes were to the lungs. She just poured bottle after bottle of the stuff into the mop bucket. The concentration was so far beyond safe levels that pulling the mop out was enough to choke a person.

In my last life, I'd fought tooth and nail to stop her, for the sake of everyone's lungs. She refused to listen, of course. It was only after I cited study after study and laid out case after case that she reluctantly switched back to plain water.

I thought I'd saved the whole family. I thought they'd be grateful. But the truth was Mom never believed me. She resented me for it, and when my brother, Cody Aven, got sick later on, she pinned all the blame on me.

Thinking about everything that had happened in my last life, I put on a smile.

"I'm heading out, Mom. I'll let you get back to mopping. And make sure you add plenty of bleach. The more, the better for killing germs."

She nodded at me approvingly.

I didn't dare stay a second longer, terrified that every extra breath in that house was doing irreversible damage to my lungs. I grabbed my phone and bolted for the door.

It was summer break. Every street and alley I walked past had signs advertising summer jobs. After some careful looking, I picked one that included room and board and headed home to pack my bags.

In my last life, I hadn't gone out to work. I'd stayed home every day, studying for the SATs. But it wasn't long before Mom pulled me out of school.

Her reasoning was that since Cody had already dropped out, it wasn't fair for me to keep going because it made him feel bad. So, she made me drop out too, to stay home and keep him company.

Just like that, she killed my dream of going to college.

Since I already knew I'd never get to take the SATs no matter what, there was no point in fighting it. Getting out of that bleach-soaked house was what mattered.

That evening, I told Mom I was dropping out and that I'd already found a job. She was thrilled.

"That's my good girl, already making money for your mother at your age. But why would you live somewhere else? Don't they charge for that? And you'd have to pay for food out there too, wouldn't you?

"That's all money down the drain. You go tell your boss you won't be staying there. You'll come home every night, eat here, and sleep here. See if he'll give you a little extra for that."

A debt was a debt, and Dad had no choice but to pay it. He couldn't bear to lose the house, so he gritted his teeth, scraped together his life savings, and borrowed everything he could from anyone who'd lend to him. He'd barely pulled together the full 300,000 dollars when the money vanished overnight."Where's the money?" The lender held up an empty bank card and waved it in Dad's face."Are you messing with me? I'm telling you right now. If you can't pay, get out of my house. You're not living here anymore.""That's impossible. I put the money right here."It was the last of everything the family had. Dad had been so careful. How could it just disappear? The lender didn't care about excuses. When Dad couldn't produce the money, he threw Mom, Dad, and all their belongings out the front door without a second thought.Dad racked his brain trying to figure out what had happened. I turned right around, took the deed to our house, and brought it to a shady lender. I used the house as collateral, walked out with 300,000 dollars, and deposited every cent into Mom's hospital account.I told the nurses she was my mother and to do whatever it took to save her, to use the best drugs, and the best treatments, and not to worry about the cost.Mom's condition was difficult to treat and required serious money. The staff was used to families trying to cut corners, so when they saw me walk in with that much cash, they went all out. They used the most expensive medications, the most advanced procedures, and top-of-the-line care from surgery through recovery. Mom pulled through.Dad made a big show of fussing over her at her bedside while quietly hiding the fact that I'd come back at all. He was thrilled with himself.Everyone thought he was the one who'd saved her. He got all the credit and the reputation of a devoted husband, and he hadn't spent a single dollar. Life w

The doctor's eyes went wide when he heard the full story. He couldn't believe someone was actually using bleach without reading the label. He sincerely suggested Mom get her lungs checked too and hinted, as delicately as he could, that she might want to get her head examined while she was at it.Mom refused. Hospitals were just money traps as far as she was concerned. She couldn't overrule Dad or Cody, but she sure as hell wasn't going to let some doctor treat her. She'd never trust a hospital. She shook off the doctor and went home, stewing the whole way."How can nobody appreciate something this good? They're all blind."As if to prove a point, she dumped every last drop of bleach onto the floor at once. The concentration was so high this time that the fumes made her dizzy and disoriented.Even Mom, as stubborn as she was, could tell something was wrong. Self-preservation won out, and she decided to go find help. But the doctor had just chewed her out, and crawling back to the h

Mom started making all of Cody's favorite meals, trying every trick she could think of to cheer him up. But Cody couldn't be cheered up. He was sick, he couldn't go out and hang around with his friends, and he was trapped at home breathing in bleach fumes all day.In the end, it was Dad who saved him."What is that smell?"Dad happened to have time off work. He'd heard Cody was sick and came home loaded down with food and snacks for him.The second he opened the front door, the bleach hit him like a freight train. Mom had mopped that morning, and it was already afternoon, but the fumes still hadn't faded. That alone said everything about how much she'd been using."Have you lost your mind? You're using this much bleach on the floors? Are you trying to choke our son to death?"When Dad found out the full extent of what Mom had been doing, his jaw nearly hit the ground. Mom looked at him like he was an idiot and launched into a lecture."Hospitals mop their floors with bleach too.

I refused to go back, no matter what."Mom, I found a job that pays really well, way better than the restaurant. I was scared you wouldn't let me go, so I left without telling you."I pulled out my entire month's pay as I spoke, "Look, Mom. I was going to give you the money, but I was afraid to come home because I thought you'd make me quit."I had to spend money to make money. I gritted my teeth and handed over every last cent, all 5,000 dollars. That was 1,000 dollars more than what Aunt Peggy's husband was paying at his factory. It killed me to let it go.But I knew that if I didn't, Mom would drag me home, or at the very least ship me off to Aunt Peggy's husband's factory.Sure enough, Mom took the 5,000 dollars, nodded with satisfaction, and dropped the whole issue. Her only condition was that I send every paycheck directly to her account from now on.I agreed without hesitation. I'd be turning 18 years old in a few months anyway. Once I was a legal adult, I'd take my money
