Chapter 2

Author: MillOnyx
Mom was torn. She liked that I'd found a job and could bring in extra income, but she didn't want to lose her free labor. After all, if I moved out, who was going to do all the housework?

She'd gotten used to being waited on for years and had no intention of lifting a finger herself. She liked things clean, sure, but that didn't mean she liked cleaning. Why would she, when she could sit on the couch and order me around?

I put on a troubled face. "You know how it is, Mom. I'm still underage. Most places won't even hire me. It wasn't easy finding this job."

"What kind of boss won't let you come home at night? Tell me who it is. I'll talk to him. And if he still says no, you can just go work at your Aunt Peggy's husband's factory. The pay there is way better anyway."

I dodged that suggestion as fast as I could, promising I'd talk to my boss about it.

Mom was close with Aunt Peggy's family. If I actually went to work at her husband's factory, I'd never see a cent of my own paycheck.

With my escape plan falling apart, all I could do was throw myself into work. I left early in the morning and came home as late as possible, trying to avoid the hours when Mom was mopping. Even so, I lived in constant fear that the bleach fumes were seeping into my lungs.

The one small mercy was that I'd always slept on the enclosed porch. At night, I left the windows wide open to air things out. It was freezing, but at least I could breathe easily.

My job started to settle into a routine, and then the news came that Cody had dropped out of school. Mom was so furious she choked on her own breath.

"I worked myself to the bone to put you through school, and you just quit? You're the pride of the Aven family. You're supposed to carry on the family name and make something of yourself."

Cody tossed his cutlery down without a care in the world.

"Didn't Brielle drop out too? Why didn't you ever say anything to her about it? You only give me a hard time."

Mom shot me a vicious glare, then turned back to coaxing him.

"How can you compare yourself to her? You're the only son in this family, our one real hope for the future. It'd be such a waste for a smart kid like you to throw that away."

I bit down hard on the inside of my cheek to keep from laughing out loud. Cody was dead last in his entire grade, and dropping out was still "a waste"? By that logic, nobody should ever drop out.

Cody was so spoiled he couldn't stand anyone disagreeing with him. The second Mom pushed back, he shoved her away.

"Will you quit nagging? I told you, I'm not going back. Ever. If you think school's so great, go yourself. I don't need school to make the Aven name mean something."

Mom couldn't win against him and eventually gave in.

Cody hadn't been home two days before he and Mom were at each other's throats, and the reason was the bleach. She mopped with it every single day.

I was out of the house during the day, and Dad had been living at his workplace and never came home, so Mom had long since gone nose-blind to the fumes. But Cody had just gotten back, and the smell hit him like a wall.

"Are you trying to kill me? It smells like you dumped poison all over the floor."

"Oh, sweetheart, that's just bleach. It's good for you. If I mop with this stuff, you won't get sick."

Mom was delighted that Cody had finally noticed all the effort she put into keeping the house clean, and she started showing off about it.

"Get rid of it. What is this garbage? I'm perfectly healthy, and I don't need this crap on the floor." Cody scowled.

"Just listen to your mother. Would I ever do anything to hurt you?"

Mom adored Cody more than anything, and when it came to his health, she refused to budge an inch, not even for him. She'd even convinced herself that his coughing was actually a good sign, that it meant his body was fighting off germs, and that the fumes were triggering some kind of detox reaction.

She thought once the viruses inside him were killed off, the coughing would stop on its own. After all, she breathed it in every day now and didn't feel a thing.

She went and mixed an extra-strong batch of bleach water and mopped Cody's room with it. He couldn't take it anymore. He stormed out and kicked over the mop bucket.

A debt was a debt, and Dad had no choice but to pay it. He couldn't bear to lose the house, so he gritted his teeth, scraped together his life savings, and borrowed everything he could from anyone who'd lend to him. He'd barely pulled together the full 300,000 dollars when the money vanished overnight."Where's the money?" The lender held up an empty bank card and waved it in Dad's face."Are you messing with me? I'm telling you right now. If you can't pay, get out of my house. You're not living here anymore.""That's impossible. I put the money right here."It was the last of everything the family had. Dad had been so careful. How could it just disappear? The lender didn't care about excuses. When Dad couldn't produce the money, he threw Mom, Dad, and all their belongings out the front door without a second thought.Dad racked his brain trying to figure out what had happened. I turned right around, took the deed to our house, and brought it to a shady lender. I used the house as collateral, walked out with 300,000 dollars, and deposited every cent into Mom's hospital account.I told the nurses she was my mother and to do whatever it took to save her, to use the best drugs, and the best treatments, and not to worry about the cost.Mom's condition was difficult to treat and required serious money. The staff was used to families trying to cut corners, so when they saw me walk in with that much cash, they went all out. They used the most expensive medications, the most advanced procedures, and top-of-the-line care from surgery through recovery. Mom pulled through.Dad made a big show of fussing over her at her bedside while quietly hiding the fact that I'd come back at all. He was thrilled with himself.Everyone thought he was the one who'd saved her. He got all the credit and the reputation of a devoted husband, and he hadn't spent a single dollar. Life w

The doctor's eyes went wide when he heard the full story. He couldn't believe someone was actually using bleach without reading the label. He sincerely suggested Mom get her lungs checked too and hinted, as delicately as he could, that she might want to get her head examined while she was at it.Mom refused. Hospitals were just money traps as far as she was concerned. She couldn't overrule Dad or Cody, but she sure as hell wasn't going to let some doctor treat her. She'd never trust a hospital. She shook off the doctor and went home, stewing the whole way."How can nobody appreciate something this good? They're all blind."As if to prove a point, she dumped every last drop of bleach onto the floor at once. The concentration was so high this time that the fumes made her dizzy and disoriented.Even Mom, as stubborn as she was, could tell something was wrong. Self-preservation won out, and she decided to go find help. But the doctor had just chewed her out, and crawling back to the h

Mom started making all of Cody's favorite meals, trying every trick she could think of to cheer him up. But Cody couldn't be cheered up. He was sick, he couldn't go out and hang around with his friends, and he was trapped at home breathing in bleach fumes all day.In the end, it was Dad who saved him."What is that smell?"Dad happened to have time off work. He'd heard Cody was sick and came home loaded down with food and snacks for him.The second he opened the front door, the bleach hit him like a freight train. Mom had mopped that morning, and it was already afternoon, but the fumes still hadn't faded. That alone said everything about how much she'd been using."Have you lost your mind? You're using this much bleach on the floors? Are you trying to choke our son to death?"When Dad found out the full extent of what Mom had been doing, his jaw nearly hit the ground. Mom looked at him like he was an idiot and launched into a lecture."Hospitals mop their floors with bleach too.

I refused to go back, no matter what."Mom, I found a job that pays really well, way better than the restaurant. I was scared you wouldn't let me go, so I left without telling you."I pulled out my entire month's pay as I spoke, "Look, Mom. I was going to give you the money, but I was afraid to come home because I thought you'd make me quit."I had to spend money to make money. I gritted my teeth and handed over every last cent, all 5,000 dollars. That was 1,000 dollars more than what Aunt Peggy's husband was paying at his factory. It killed me to let it go.But I knew that if I didn't, Mom would drag me home, or at the very least ship me off to Aunt Peggy's husband's factory.Sure enough, Mom took the 5,000 dollars, nodded with satisfaction, and dropped the whole issue. Her only condition was that I send every paycheck directly to her account from now on.I agreed without hesitation. I'd be turning 18 years old in a few months anyway. Once I was a legal adult, I'd take my money
