Chapter 3

Author: MillOnyx
The entire bucket of bleach water spilled across the floor, and the fumes hit like a wall, filling the room in seconds. The liquid seeped into the cracks between the floorboards and wouldn't go away.

"Look at this garbage. It's choking me out. Do you even realize that?"

Cody was fed up. He grabbed Mom's mop and tried to snap it in half. But when he couldn't break it, he threw it down in frustration and stormed out, slamming the door behind him.

Mom stood there helplessly. "I'm doing this for you. I'm your mother. Why would I ever hurt you?"

She didn't dare yell at Cody, so she turned to me to vent instead. "Your brother doesn't appreciate what I'm doing for him. I'm trying to keep him healthy. How is that a bad thing?"

Mom's lungs were already badly damaged from the bleach. She could barely get a few words out without coughing. But she had no idea that was the reason.

That suited me just fine.

"Mom, Cody's still young. He doesn't understand how much you care. You can't just let him have his way. Kids don't know about this stuff. When he's older, he'll see that you were only looking out for him."

Mom nodded firmly and then started muttering to herself. "But what's wrong with me? I've been using bleach for so long that all the germs in my body should be gone by now. So why am I still coughing?"

"You're overthinking it, Mom. It's probably just from getting so worked up with Cody. Don't let him get to you. He's still a kid. We just have to be patient with him."

The last thing I wanted was for Mom to figure out what was really going on. To make sure she didn't get suspicious, I offered to take her to the clinic downstairs.

It was a back-alley operation. The doctor, a guy named Walt Granger, had actually been a veterinarian. One time, in a pinch, he'd used animal medication on a human patient, and by some miracle, it worked.

After that, Walt got a taste for easy money and converted his vet practice into a clinic. Treating people paid a lot better than treating animals.

Most of the people in the neighborhood were elderly, and nobody ever questioned his credentials, so he'd gotten away with it all this time. And because Walt didn't hold back with his dosages, going way heavier than any real hospital would, his treatments worked fast.

People swore by him. He had a solid reputation around the neighborhood.

But I knew the truth about that clinic. In my last life, after Cody pushed me off the building, I hadn't actually died on impact. I'd held on, praying Mom would take me to a hospital.

Instead, when she saw me lying there covered in blood but still breathing, she panicked and carried me to Walt's clinic in secret. Walt told her he could fix me. He stuck a needle in my arm, and I died right there on the spot.

After that, Mom didn't want Cody taking the blame, and Walt didn't want to take the blame either, so they struck a deal and dumped my body together. Mom told everyone I'd run off with some older man, so my body was never found.

Thinking about Walt's track record as a doctor, I smiled. Mom was going to be in great hands down the road.

True to his veterinary roots, Walt didn't skimp on the dosage. One shot, and Mom's back stopped aching, her legs stopped hurting, and her cough vanished completely. It was practically a miracle cure. Walt was a genius, as far as she was concerned.

But Mom still had questions. "Doctor, what's actually causing this? Why was I coughing like that?"

Walt had no idea. His whole approach was to jab people with a needle and hope for the best.

If it worked, great, and if it didn't, too bad. Diagnosing the cause of an illness was way beyond his pay grade. If he'd had that kind of knowledge, he would've gone into real medicine and never become a vet in the first place.

I watched Walt put on a face that was trying very hard to look thoughtful but was really just confused, and I jumped in before he could say anything.

"That's actually what I was wondering too, Dr. Granger. Do you think it could be stress-related? She's been fighting with my brother these past couple of days, and it's really gotten to her."

A debt was a debt, and Dad had no choice but to pay it. He couldn't bear to lose the house, so he gritted his teeth, scraped together his life savings, and borrowed everything he could from anyone who'd lend to him. He'd barely pulled together the full 300,000 dollars when the money vanished overnight."Where's the money?" The lender held up an empty bank card and waved it in Dad's face."Are you messing with me? I'm telling you right now. If you can't pay, get out of my house. You're not living here anymore.""That's impossible. I put the money right here."It was the last of everything the family had. Dad had been so careful. How could it just disappear? The lender didn't care about excuses. When Dad couldn't produce the money, he threw Mom, Dad, and all their belongings out the front door without a second thought.Dad racked his brain trying to figure out what had happened. I turned right around, took the deed to our house, and brought it to a shady lender. I used the house as collateral, walked out with 300,000 dollars, and deposited every cent into Mom's hospital account.I told the nurses she was my mother and to do whatever it took to save her, to use the best drugs, and the best treatments, and not to worry about the cost.Mom's condition was difficult to treat and required serious money. The staff was used to families trying to cut corners, so when they saw me walk in with that much cash, they went all out. They used the most expensive medications, the most advanced procedures, and top-of-the-line care from surgery through recovery. Mom pulled through.Dad made a big show of fussing over her at her bedside while quietly hiding the fact that I'd come back at all. He was thrilled with himself.Everyone thought he was the one who'd saved her. He got all the credit and the reputation of a devoted husband, and he hadn't spent a single dollar. Life w

The doctor's eyes went wide when he heard the full story. He couldn't believe someone was actually using bleach without reading the label. He sincerely suggested Mom get her lungs checked too and hinted, as delicately as he could, that she might want to get her head examined while she was at it.Mom refused. Hospitals were just money traps as far as she was concerned. She couldn't overrule Dad or Cody, but she sure as hell wasn't going to let some doctor treat her. She'd never trust a hospital. She shook off the doctor and went home, stewing the whole way."How can nobody appreciate something this good? They're all blind."As if to prove a point, she dumped every last drop of bleach onto the floor at once. The concentration was so high this time that the fumes made her dizzy and disoriented.Even Mom, as stubborn as she was, could tell something was wrong. Self-preservation won out, and she decided to go find help. But the doctor had just chewed her out, and crawling back to the h

Mom started making all of Cody's favorite meals, trying every trick she could think of to cheer him up. But Cody couldn't be cheered up. He was sick, he couldn't go out and hang around with his friends, and he was trapped at home breathing in bleach fumes all day.In the end, it was Dad who saved him."What is that smell?"Dad happened to have time off work. He'd heard Cody was sick and came home loaded down with food and snacks for him.The second he opened the front door, the bleach hit him like a freight train. Mom had mopped that morning, and it was already afternoon, but the fumes still hadn't faded. That alone said everything about how much she'd been using."Have you lost your mind? You're using this much bleach on the floors? Are you trying to choke our son to death?"When Dad found out the full extent of what Mom had been doing, his jaw nearly hit the ground. Mom looked at him like he was an idiot and launched into a lecture."Hospitals mop their floors with bleach too.

I refused to go back, no matter what."Mom, I found a job that pays really well, way better than the restaurant. I was scared you wouldn't let me go, so I left without telling you."I pulled out my entire month's pay as I spoke, "Look, Mom. I was going to give you the money, but I was afraid to come home because I thought you'd make me quit."I had to spend money to make money. I gritted my teeth and handed over every last cent, all 5,000 dollars. That was 1,000 dollars more than what Aunt Peggy's husband was paying at his factory. It killed me to let it go.But I knew that if I didn't, Mom would drag me home, or at the very least ship me off to Aunt Peggy's husband's factory.Sure enough, Mom took the 5,000 dollars, nodded with satisfaction, and dropped the whole issue. Her only condition was that I send every paycheck directly to her account from now on.I agreed without hesitation. I'd be turning 18 years old in a few months anyway. Once I was a legal adult, I'd take my money
