Chapter 3

Author: Dyeing
I returned to my old home.

The villa was supposed to have been seized, yet it was brightly lit.

It was Archie's birthday, and they were throwing a party. String lights decorated the yard, and a movie was playing by the fountain.

A few boys were sitting nearby. They were probably Archie's friends.

When they saw me at the gate, they looked disgusted.

"What is some beggar doing here? Scram! We don't have any money for you!"

I ignored them, entered the passcode, and walked straight inside.

The moment I opened the door, my eyes met Elise's. She was about to put a birthday hat on Archie.

The instant she saw me, her face went pale. The hat crumpled in her grip.

Archie froze too, tightening his grip on his fork and knife.

The room fell awkwardly silent as they exchanged a glance.

I simply sat down, pulled the four-tiered cake toward me, and started eating it with my hands.

I couldn't remember the last time I'd eaten something that good.

Five years ago, things like this had been within easy reach. But for the past five years, all I could do was smell cakes through bakery windows.

Sometimes, when the craving became unbearable, I'd even eat someone else's leftovers without caring how dirty they were.

"Leon…"

Elise frowned and stepped toward me.

"At least wash your hands first. They're dirty…"

Dirty?

I looked up at her.

Then, almost deliberately, I put each finger into my mouth and licked it clean.

Her expression immediately tightened.

Archie gritted his teeth.

"Leon, what the hell are you doing? Elise didn't mean to deceive you. She saved your life!"

My stomach had grown accustomed to bland food, and the sudden sweetness made me feel sick.

I pushed the cake aside.

Then I grabbed a baseball bat and slammed it into the dining table.

"You're celebrating a birthday? I almost died, and you're throwing a damn party? You punished me for five years over one punch? Fine! Then none of you get to have it easy!"

I screamed as I swung the bat again and again.

Elise stood there, her face turning pale as she watched.

Archie hid behind her, too stunned to say a word.

Soon, the dining table was completely wrecked.

But was that enough?

No.

I stormed into the living room.

The couch, TV, and coffee table were destroyed one after another.

The crashing grew louder with every swing.

Elise didn't stop me—not until I lunged at Archie.

She grabbed my wrist.

"Are you done yet?"

My chest heaved as I struggled to breathe.

After steadying myself, I slapped Archie across the face.

His scream followed the sharp crack.

Something in Elise seemed to snap. Without thinking, she slapped me back.

I hit the floor, my ears ringing.

She looked at me in disbelief.

"Leon, I can't believe you still don't know what you did wrong after everything! Yes, I punished you, but it wasn't real! Did you really have to take it this far?"

I could barely believe what I was hearing.

After a long moment, I finally managed to speak.

"I swallowed an entire bottle of sleeping pills…"

"And I saved you." Her voice was frustrated, almost regretful. "Now that you know the truth, just come home. I won't let you suffer anymore. Isn't that enough?"

I wanted to laugh, but tears came first.

"Elise, where were you for the past five years?"

She avoided my eyes.

"I was afraid you'd find out, so I took Archie abroad for a while."

I instantly felt like I'd been thrown into hell.

While I was struggling just to survive, she and Archie had been traveling the world.

Suddenly, I felt like I should never have come over.

I nodded and got to my feet.

As I reached the door, Archie suddenly shouted, "Leon, you have no right to be bitter. You owed me this!"

I turned around.

My eyes met my sister's.

She didn't deny it.

I gripped the doorknob, barely keeping myself upright.

"Fine. I owe all of you."

  • My Punishment Ends when I Die   Chapter 7

Archie was sent overseas to a poverty-stricken region. I heard it was plagued by conflict and that people there struggled just to survive. Before leaving, he knelt on the ground, crying and begging Elise not to abandon him. She showed no emotion, except for the hatred in her eyes. She looked down at him coldly. "If I could kill you, I wouldn't even send you there." Archie never dared say another word. He thought he could eventually find a way to escape and return, but he didn't know Elise had arranged for people to keep watch over him. He would never set foot in the country again. Meanwhile, my funeral began. At the memorial, Elise apologized to our relatives and friends. Dressed in black, she looked even paler than usual. Her voice was painfully hoarse. "I'm the one who destroyed Leon. I failed him, and I failed our parents."So I've decided to donate everything I own in Leon's name. From now on, I'll stay by his grave and give up everything else. I'm a sinner. I only

Elise's gaze locked on the dark stain on the floor. Shock was written all over her face. The next second, she kicked the bathroom door open. I was lying motionless inside. Elise's face went deathly pale. "Leon…" She stumbled into the bathroom. "Leon! Leon Sterling!" Trembling, she shook me. When I didn't respond, she checked for a pulse. There was none. Her legs gave out, and she collapsed to the floor as tears streamed down her face. Then, in a panic, she gathered me into her arms. Archie froze in shock too. It was his first time seeing someone who had died, and he covered his mouth, barely able to keep himself from getting sick. Elise ignored him and rushed me to the hospital. By coincidence, Charlotte was the one who received us again. When she realized that I was truly gone this time, even a doctor accustomed to loss couldn't hold back her tears. There was nothing the hospital could do. They could only confirm my death. After completing the necessary p

I was gone, but Elise's voice continued to drift through my phone. Elise grew increasingly frantic. It sounded as though she had sat up in bed."Leon, what the hell do you mean? I told you I'd forgive you as long as you apologized. Stop playing games and talking about dying. "Say something… What are you doing?" Her voice began to tremble. "Are you messing with me? If you don't want to apologize, you don't have to scare me like this. If you don't say anything, I'm hanging up!" But she didn't hang up. Instead, she became even more agitated. "Why did you turn off the cameras? Turn them back on! Leon, I'm telling you one last time—" "Who's calling, Elise?" Archie interrupted her. As if he were her lifeline, she quickly turned to him. "Archie, Leon just called and said something about giving me his life. Then he went silent. Do you think he might…" "Elise, you're overthinking it!" Archie laughed. "He just doesn't want to apologize. He's putting on a show because he's

Over the next few days, Elise began bombarding me with calls and messages. She thought I was still angry. At first, she scolded me for not understanding her intentions. "You're so spoiled. I only made you live on your own for a couple of years. I didn't give you any money, and you threatened to take your own life and trashed the house." "Leon, do you really think the whole world revolves around you?" "Do you think these past five years were easy for me? I've been suffering too, waiting every day for you to come home." "You've let me down, and you've let our parents down too!" When I didn't respond, she changed tactics and tried to coax me into coming home. "It's been so long. How can you still not understand? Leon, we're siblings. I promise, if you come home, I'll send Archie abroad. Okay?" "Stop being stubborn. All you have to do is apologize. Once you say you're sorry, we can put the past behind us." But no matter what she said, I never replied. Eventually, she lo

  • My Punishment Ends when I Die   Chapter 2

I grew up privileged and had rarely faced any real hardship, so I was strong-willed and never tolerated being pushed around. Years ago, our parents died in a car accident. Feeling that our home was too empty with just the two of us, Elise brought her godbrother, Archie, to live with us.In front of her, he sweetly declared that I would always be his brother. But then he falsely accused me of bullying him.Elise scolded me for being immature and said she had spoiled me too much. I refused to tolerate that kind of treatment. I punched Archie and told him, "This is what actually hitting someone looks like." With his eye swollen, he demanded justice from Elise. She demanded that I apologize. When I refused, she raised her hand as if she wanted to slap me. I looked at her in disappointment. "Elise, think carefully. If you hit me, you won't be my sister anymore."She was furious, but she never actually slapped me. Instead, she helped Archie up and gently comforted him. "I'
