Chapter 5

Author: Bright Lights
There was a burning rage in my chest that refused to go away.

Chris stopped sending things to my father, but he started sending me intimate pictures of him and Nicole instead.

[Kenneth, you're the idiot who actually thought this was a game]

[Nicole never forgot about me. We got back together a long time ago. All this time, she's just been messing with you to make you angry.]

One picture after another came through. Each was stamped with a date and time.

When I compared them, I finally realized what had really been happening.

Two months ago, I came down with a fever and was so sick I could barely stand. I called Nicole, and she claimed she was away on a business trip, but the pictures showed her celebrating Chris' birthday.

Last month, she stood me up on my birthday, saying a client had suddenly called and she couldn't get away.

As it turned out, being 'busy' meant going to the movies with Chris.

Last week, it was our wedding anniversary. She said there was a problem with a project and promised we'd celebrate another time.

In reality, she was busy taking care of Chris while he was sick.

Every single one of those things proved that she cared far more about her first love, Chris, than she ever had about me, her husband.

I'd always thought she simply loved messing with me.

It turned out that all those games about making me angry, and all those claims that she was trying to prove how much I loved her, had just been lies she used to toy with my feelings.

All these years, I'd been an idiot for foolishly believing that she loved me and simply had a twisted way of showing it.

It was ridiculous.

Right after Chris finished sending the photos, one of Nicole's friends forwarded me a chat log from their group.

[Kenneth, hang in there a little longer. You have to wait until I win the bet before you get angry and give in, or I'm going to lose my entire paycheck this month.]

Among the screenshots he'd forwarded was a video. The background showed clips of me losing my temper over and over again, playing on a loop. There was an empty space at the end. It was clearly reserved for footage of what would happen this time.

There were also messages from Nicole's friends asking her if she wasn't afraid I would actually leave her.

Nicole had replied with absolute confidence.

[He won't leave me. He just gets moodier as he gets older. Give it a few more days. I only have to sweet-talk a little, and he'll come crawling back.]

I pulled open a drawer. Inside were two copies of divorce papers.

Nicole had written them last year just to provoke me.

I'd been furious at the time, but she had happily hugged me and apologized, saying that if I'd gotten that angry, it proved I must love her like crazy.

I hadn't known what to say. I'd left the papers at my parents' house and eventually forgot about them.

Now they were exactly what I needed.

The day Dad was discharged from the hospital, Nicole sent me a video of herself going on a date with Chris. She was trying to provoke me again.

[Kenneth, if you're upset, I'll stop playing these games with you from now on.]

I ignored her and focused on spending time with my parents.

Nicole never got a reply from me, and she started getting anxious.

Her friends began coming up with ideas to turn up the heat and provoke me even more.

They encouraged Nicole to take wedding photos with Chris.

"Nicole, trust me. This will definitely work. No man can tolerate his wife taking wedding photos with another man. He'll definitely get angry."

Nicole was skeptical, but she went along with it.

She was about to send the photos to me when a delivery driver called out to her.

"Ms. Stormer, this is your delivery. Mr. Carlson specifically instructed me to hand this important package directly to you."

The moment Nicole's friends found out, they burst out laughing.

"See? We told you! He definitely couldn't take it anymore!"

"Nicole, hurry up and open it. Show us what's inside."

Nicole and her friends thought the same thing.

She opened the package eagerly.

The moment she saw the divorce certificate inside, she froze completely. The package slipped from her hands and landed on the ground.

It had happened so suddenly, just like how I had left without a word.

Nicole didn't care whether we accepted any of the things she brought. She simply forced them into our hands. When I took my parents on vacation, she shamelessly insisted on coming along. But on the way there, she received a phone call and anxiously told me, "I'm sorry. Chris said my dad is sick. I need to go back. Wait for me. Once I return, I'll continue making it up to you."Nicole rushed home. But when she arrived, she saw Felix sitting at the table leisurely sipping a drink.Chris was in the kitchen helping Meredith clean the vegetables.Nicole flew into a rage. "Chris, what the hell is going on?"Chris stammered and couldn't answer. Felix coldly explained on his behalf. "Enough. Don't blame him. This was my idea. If I hadn't lied to you and brought you back, you would've kept following Kenneth around without caring about your company or your own family."Meredith also tried to reason with her. "Let me give you some advice. Just let Kenneth go. You can't force a relationshi

"You were the one who confidently said Kenneth would only get a little angry. You said there was no way he'd leave you, and no matter how angry you made him, all you had to do was apologize and play the victim, and he'd forgive you.""All of this was your idea, and now you're blaming us? We only encouraged you from the sidelines. You were the one who caused all the hurt.""You were the one who went on dates with Chris and deliberately sent him messages.""You and Chris were the ones who accused Kenneth of being the other man at the company. That was what drove him away.""Every single one of these things was your fault. Don't blame us!"Nicole buried her head under the blanket. She was overwhelmed by grief."Get out! All of you, get out!""Nicole–" Chris said cautiously."You too! Get out! All of you, get out! I don't want to see any of you. Not one of you!"Nicole lifted her head and began throwing everything within reach at them. Her friends cursed as they hurried out.Eve

I pushed Nicole out the door by force.I then slammed the door shut.Nicole leaned against the door. Tears streamed down her cheeks and into her mouth. They tasted bitter with hints of regret."Kenneth, don't you love me?"I didn't answer.I had loved her.We had been together. We'd gotten married. All of that had been proof that I loved her, but even the deepest love couldn't withstand endless tests or her never-ending lies.Thunder rumbled overhead.Dark clouds covered the sky, mirroring Nicole's mood.Nicole lingered outside my door for a long time. She stared at the torrential rain outside and suddenly seemed to make up her mind. She took the elevator downstairs. She then stood where she could be seen from my window. She refused to use an umbrella as the rain poured down on her.The downpour soaked her within seconds.Rain mixed with her tears streamed down her face until she could barely keep her eyes open. Her friends started shouting."Nicole, stop standing out

I was constantly dealing with Nicole's unreasonable behavior. She made me lose my temper repeatedly, and it gradually took a toll on my health. There was always a heavy knot of frustration in my chest. It wasn't until after I divorced her that the pressure finally lifted, and I felt much more at ease.Maybe marriage wasn't the problem. Maybe I had simply chosen the wrong person to marry.I shook my head while mentally preparing to banish that wretched woman from my mind. Then I heard her voice at the door."Mrs. Carlson, Mr. Carlson, is Kenneth home? I need to talk to him."A group of her friends stood behind her, but none of them said a word. The moment Mom saw Nicole, her expression darkened.Dad, who was sitting on the couch, waved his cane to make her leave. "Kenneth is already divorced from you. Don't come here anymore. We're not your in-laws!"Nicole stood awkwardly at the doorway.Despite seeing how Mom had no intention of letting her in, she still shamelessly squeez

"Divorce certificate?"The moment Nicole saw the divorce certificate inside the envelope, she stood there completely stunned. Her friends were equally dumbfounded. They couldn't believe what they were seeing."That has to be a fake divorce certificate, right?" one of them muttered under their breath.Nicole's face had already gone pale. "No. This can't be real. How could Kenneth possibly divorce me? We love each other so much. How could he ever bring himself to leave me? There's no way!"Seeing how Nicole looked completely lost, her friends suddenly felt uncomfortable and quickly reassured her."Maybe the divorce certificate is fake. Maybe this is just another one of his tricks to make you chase after him.""Exactly. We've been messing with him all this time. Maybe he's decided to turn the tables and mess with you instead.""Don't fall for it. Otherwise, you'll be the one at a disadvantage in your marriage."Her friends kept trying to convince her, but Nicole couldn't hear a w
